Lessons in service for all.

Lessons in Service from Charlie Trotter
My coworker recommended this book to me. I took her recommendation due to the fact that she is a great customer service provider. It didn't disappoint.
I've never had a chance to visit Trotter's and it looks like I won't because they have closed their doors since this book was written. I think there are a lot of great examples of extraordinary customer service in this book. I work customer service for a large coffee supply company with a small staff. There are only about three of us that answer the phones to help people with their orders.
Answering the phones is always a surprise, sometimes it's someone having troubles with an espresso machine and at other times it's as simple as syrup pumps. After reading this book and seeing how the staff at Trotter's deals with their customers and Trotter himself I can't help but be better for my company. The things they go through to deliver the best service they can seems crazy at times ie. driving patrons home in their own cars during a blizzard. But they do it and they really believe in bettering themselves and their industry.
If you can get over the fact that at times this books reads like an advertisement there are a lot of things to learn. I definitely recommend this book to anyone that is in the service industry and looking to better themselves.

A New Standard for Business

Edmund Lawler paints a brilliant picture of the type service to expect when visiting Charlie Trotters. Not only does this book illustrate a new standard by which the service industry should operate. It illustrates the level of service lost to our generation in all forms of business. Too often are businesses about money first. Trotter destroys that standard and raises the bar to unheard of height.
Edmund Lawler paints a new picture for me. The old mindset working at numerous restaurants with the mindset of how few servers and chefs can I have on duty in order to maximize profits is thrown out the window in spectacular fashion. Long story short, this book is a must read for anyone working in the service industry.

This is a great read whether you are a restaurateur or a business owner. Mr. Lawler does a masterful job telling the story of Charlie Trotter's success, but also makes the point that there are life lessons for all of us within our professional lives that mimic Trotter's mantra. Service is what makes restaurants memorable and businesses successful. This book will teach you something whatever it is you do for a living.

About the Author

Wong is a theoretical physicist educated at UCLA and Harvard. He has worked in Copenhagen, Princeton, Oxford, and Saclay (near Paris). He has been at UCLA since 1969. He was a Sloan research Fellow, and is a fellow of the American Physical Society. His main interest is in theoretical physics.

For Currency, It's This or Cahill...
By Let's Compare Options Preptorial
Dozens of "mathematical physics" books exist, including $20 classics from Dover. We recently reviewed an advanced copy of Cahill's fine text: Physical Mathematics. If you're confining yourself to the 90% of physics math that include tensors and linear algebra up to relativity, don't waste your time on either of these texts, there are many more available, at far less cost.

If you've got to get heavily into quantum mechanics, Laplace operators, wave functions, etc., the majority of texts either start at too high a level (assuming advanced linear algebra or even abstract algebra and analysis), or don't cover the most current techniques and algorithms. For those, you need either this text or the upcoming Cahill text above.

Comparing the two: it's interesting. This text comes from a physicist looking at math and Cahill comes from a mathematician looking at physics. Of course the math and applications are identical, but the learning method much different! Both start relatively simply (second year undergrad, but you're MUCH better off if you have at least one linear algebra course, or self study book, before you tackle these), then progress quickly (as in within two chapters in this text and three in Cahill) to advanced material.

As an example, take a "simple" wave function. Your function will progress from either a short circuit or closed, taught string harmonic, to a guitar string, to an electromagnetic wave, to a quantum wave. By page two of the simplest guitar string, you're into partial differential equations! That's because you quickly find you've got to hold either time or space constant to solve the other. By electromagnetic waves, you're into Fourier and Laplace transforms and operators (and their much harder finishes in inverse transforms), and by quantum, your waves are actually "made of" probability distributions!

This text tries to balance the practical with rigor, which is a difficult marriage. That's because mathematical physics has "fractured" into several fields now: 1. Researchers who try to come up with algorithms to solve differential equations, or in the case of discrete, group theory matrices; 2. Mathematicians working on proofs of new solution methods, such as using Laplacians to solve graph problems in physics and chemistry 3. Practical engineers who use MatLab and other programs tied to their CADs and PSpices to USE Fourier transforms to get specific voltage (ie information/signal) values for their wave functions or circuits 4. Physics researchers.

Both of these texts are superb, for reference, for self study, and for courses. The choice has to do with where you stand on the above point of view scale. I'd choose this text if my field were physics or engineering and I'd choose Cahill if it was math or engineering. If you're in engineering (as I am), both texts work, and either covers the entire field in fine fashion. Cahill is a "little" more friendly if you're rusty in linear algebra, but both progress rapidly to differential equations if you're in continuous, and group theory/graph if you're into discrete.

As texts, both are student friendly with great websites, errata, additional weblems, etc. I'd choose either of these over the current group of 5 or 6 that are used most often, due to currency of material and relevance of examples. Sure, RF is forever, but in the real world, if you don't relate what you're teaching to MathCad, you're doing your students a disservice. Both of these texts do so thoroughly, with the underlying pseudo code and examples that allow you to translate what's going on "under" the software just enough to reformulate your problems without becoming a PhD mathematician. 5 stars to this volume for keeping it's usefulness in that way as a great reference.

Save Your Time and Money

This book is probably one of the least helpful physics/math books I have ever had to purchase. There are very few examples in the text of most concepts, forcing you to find general forms for almost everything that is relevant in Theoretical Methods for Physicists. This is not only frustrating, but confusing as some examples in the book are so un-generalized that it can lead you to false conclusions. It is dense and difficult to read. There are no solutions, meaning that you have no clue if you are understanding the concepts or procedures correctly. I purchased several other books, and each had a better explanation of the topics covered in the Wong book.
I will say this for the Wong book: it covers everything. Not well, but it does touch on all the topics needed for a theoretical methods course. However, I found that the Arfkin and Boas books both helped tremendously more than this book ever did.

Enlightening history of constitutional change

This short book gave me a new, deeper understanding of human rights and constitutional change and provided some real insight into the similar processes that have impacted gun rights, gay marriage, and human rights of non-nationals. Highly recommended. It does not make you change your moralistic of these rights issues; rather, it focuses on the process of change.

You start it to learn, but finish it to enjoy

I ordered this book, after hearing Mr. Cole in a radio interview. We have a lesbian married daughter, and I'm a Life Patron member of the NRA, so the juxtaposition of the first two sections intrigued me. When I received my copy, I worried that it would read like a text ( has page after page of footnotes). However, it was so well written, I got involved from the first, and finished it quickly. Every American, regardless of politics, should read this book. You learn so much about how groups of citizens can indeed make constitutional law.

Great book - highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn about the process of citizens organizing to change constitutional law. It's very helpful that the author explores this process through both a "liberal" cause (same-sex marriage) as well as a "conservative" cause (gun rights) and it greatly enhances the credibility of the thesis of the book. The book itself reads quickly and is not overly dense.

This book is an excellent source to understand the requirements for Food Safety Management System. It gives a practical common sense approach to understanding what is needed to successfully comply with Global Food Safety standards. I highly recommend this book and brought copies for my fellow associates at work to read and continuously improve our quality systems.

Moreland and Craig present a comprehensive introduction to philosophy from a Christian point of view. Both theologically and philosophically engaging and stimulating. IVP: At well over six hundred pages, this is a monumental book. What led you to take on such a task?

J. P. Moreland: There are two reasons. First, the ascendancy of Christian philosophy in the last fifteen years is nothing short of miraculous. As Mark Noll notes, Christians in other academic disciplines would do well to note how philosophers have made strides to recapture their field for Christ. Bill and I wanted to make the fruits of this resurgence available to others. Second, philosophy is so crucial to developing and defending a Christian worldview that we believed it was essential to make available to the evangelical community solid Christian philosophy in a wide variety of philosophical disciplines. IVP: What do you see as the role of philosophy in shaping a Christian worldview?

Moreland: Combined with biblical exegesis and biblical theology, philosophy is the most important field--historically and conceptually--for developing a Christian worldview. As we make clear in the text, systematic theology itself, as well as attempts to integrate one's field with biblical teaching, essentially depends on philosophy being done with excellence. Our book seeks to remain faithful to central figures in the history of philosophy, especially those consistent with the faith, while at the same time drawing insights from the explosion of Christian philosophy in the last fifteen years to make a genuine synthesis available to a broad readership.

About the Author
J. P. Moreland (PhD, University of Southern California) is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University, in La Mirada, California. He is the author or coauthor of over thirty-five books, including Kingdom Triangle, Scaling the Secular City, Consciousness and the Existence of God, Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview, In Search of a Confident Faith, Love Your God With All Your Mind, The God Question, and Body and Soul. In his distinguished career, Moreland has co-planted three churches, spoken and debated on over 175 college campuses around the country, and served with Campus Crusade for Christ for ten years. The founder and director of Eidos Christian Center, he also previously served as a bioethicist for PersonaCare Nursing Homes, Inc. headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. Moreland's ideas have been covered by both popular religious and non-religious outlets, including the New Scientist, Christianity Today, PBS's "Closer to Truth," and WORLD magazine.

William Lane Craig (PhD, philosophy, University of Birmingham; ThD, systematic theology, University of Munich) is Research Professor of Philosophy at T albot School of Theology, Biola University, in La Mirada, California. He is also president of the Evangelical Philosophical Society. Craig has published articles in philosophical and theological journals such as The Journal of Philosophy, American Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophical Studies, Philosophy, British Journal for the Philosophy of Science, Modern Theology and Religious Studies. He has written or cowritten more than twenty books, including The Kalam Cosmological Argument; Divine Foreknowledge and Human Freedom; Theism, Atheism and Big Bang Cosmology and God, Time and Eternity.

Definitely for University-level Philosophy Students and Not the Casual Reader

When one thinks about philosophy and religion in America, one tends to think of an intellectual war not too dissimilar to that between science and religion, if there even is such a thing. However, one development in academia in recent years has been the philosophical resurrection of theism as a plausible intellectual alternative. Authors William Lane Craig and J.P. Moreland have been at the forefront of this movement and this textbook represents their synthesis of Western philosophical thinking and Christian theism. And when I say textbook, I mean it. This is not a very accessible book to the casual reader. In fact, the casual reader would be better off tackling Mr. Craig's On Guard: Defending Your Faith with Reason and Precision or Reasonable Faith: Christian Truth and Apologetics. This book is targeted for philosophy students at a university level, and Christian philosophy students in particular. The uninitiated will have a difficult time slogging through this book like I did with chapter 2's rules of logic and argumentation being a particularly early and high hurdle to leap over. Better to take the authors at their word and use this book more as a reference rather than as a book to be read cover to cover. That is not to say that none of this is interesting or insightful. Parts IV and VI, which deal with the philosophy of science and the philosophy of religion and philosophical theology, are particularly interesting. In some ways this is not a great textbook either. Although it has chapter summaries and lists of key words used in each chapter, there are no chapter questions to answer to aid in comprehension, nor are the key words defined at the end of the chapter, although they are bolded throughout the text, so finding their definitions shouldn't be too hard. The final word though is to try your hand at an easier book if you are not already familiar with philosophical concepts and if you are familiar to use this book as a reference book rather than a book to read casually.

Philosophical Foundations for a Christian Worldview Review

This was the required text for the Philosophy of Religion course I took over the past summer at my SBC seminary. I found that Moreland and Craig did an impeccable job of working through the basics of philosophy while maintaining the rigorous nature of doing good philosophy. As a "B" type student, the text offered a good look at entry level philosophy.

It might be difficult for someone attempting to learn or understand the basics of philosophy as a first primer - that person might want to not approach a text this academically rigorous for their first look. With that said, the basic underpinnings of the Christian worldview really are approached well here by Moreland and Craig. One star was taken off only by this reviewer's preference - the structure was not up to par at points in my opinion - but overall the work is thorough and impressive. I would definitely recommend for the philosophy student or individual willing to take time to work through the text with all of their effort.

Makes clear what happened to Christ's apostles and church

What I liked:
This book keeps it simple but gives an abundance of scripture and historical reference. You know a short way into this read that THIS author actually studied and didn't just take anyone's word for it. You also are able to see WHAT HAPPENED to Christianity, how it got so big and so divided. I appreciated that a lot. I also enjoyed the study into the history of Paul, Simon, and where the early apostles and church members went after Christ's death.

What I didn't like:
It is clear that a great deal of work was invested in the research behind this book. More graphs and timelines or a supporting webpage with an interactive timeline like a museum would have would have been nice additions. I'm visual, and this book makes clear to me the progress of Christ's little flock down through history but more visuals would further enrich the experience of this read.

Conclusion:
This book makes it plain that if you want Christ's faith then you have to study and find where He is working today. He lived and taught and established a very different gospel and church than what has become popular Christianity. You really have to read your bible, pray and look to find God's truth. This book is a great help in that direction.

Church History According to Armstrongite Cults

Armstrongite cults claim that there has been a parallel stream of Saturday Sabbathkeepers since the apostolic era, and that non-observers belong to a false form of Christianity characterized by Sunday observance. Gerald Flurry is part of the Armstrongite cult called Philadelphia Church of God.

Their claim is that non-observers are under the "Mark of the Beast" because of Sabbath-breaking.

Along with Sabbath-keeping, they teach errors in just about every category of theology, including claiming that they will be God in the resurrection and that they are the true church. They claim that the rest of Christianity is a false version of the true faith, and that those who belong to such organizations are "so-called believers".

The underlying mentality of Armstrongites is based, in part, on presuppositions that they obtained from Alexander Hislop's book "Two Babylons", which claims that the Roman Catholic church and Protestants are the result of the Babylonian Mystery Religion, which is the worship of Nimrod and Semiramis.

Hislop's book has been discredited soundly by scholars, as Nimrod and Semiramis are portrayed as husband and wife, and they didn't even exist in the same century. In addition, the form of reasoning used to relate all pagan religions to the worship of Nimrod and Semiramis is very poor, and scholars scoff at it.

In addition, Herbert Armstrong "borrowed" a lot of teachings from the Seventh Day Adventists and Joseph Bates, although he claimed that he restored "new truth" that had not been taught since the apostolic era.

Regarding Armstrongite views of church history, their assertions are also very poor. For instance, they claim the Waldensians were Sabbathkeepers due to the word Insabati being used in regards to them. Actually Insabati applied to their footwear, and not to keeping the Sabbath..the words only sound similar. In addition, some of the groups may have described themselves as Sabbathkeepers, but were actually talking about Sunday and not the Sabbath.

Gerald Flurry is a former disciple of Herbert Armstrong, who taught that Sabbathkeeping was the sign of a true believer, and that those who don't observe the Sabbath (Saturday) are not saved. I belonged to an Armstrongite cult for over a decade. Save yourself a lot of time if you're a seeker and find a good, solid church like Evangelical Free Church of America.

Regarding the Sabbath, I recommend Sabbath in Christ by Dale Ratzlaff. In addition, I recommend a series called Fourth Commandment by Dan Caffese on SermonAudio.
