Good book

I have noticed that the books on witnessing to JW and Mormons get "bad" reviews, not from real readers as much as gungho JW and Mormons trying to stop us from knowing how to witness the truth to them. This is a good book. If you don't agree with the literature, don't bad mouth it, if you are secure in your faith you won't be upset with those of us who are also secure & must deal with the door to door religious people who insist on talking to me. I plan on being ready for them, how about YOU?

A number of the reviews rating this book 1, 2 or 3 stars were clearly written by nonchristians who are not qualified to review this book. Please disregard their unjustified complaints.

Ron Rhodes used to be with CRI back in the 80's and does a great job from Scripture showing the numerous false teachings of the Watchtower in this book. And including ch. 10 in this book is right on target. The point of talking to JW's is not to win a debate, but to bring the gospel to them so that they might believe in the Jesus of the Bible and turn from their sins. I have seen JW's in my neighborhood 10 times in the past 4 1/2 yrs and have talked to them at my door 5 times. They have learned their script and certain verses from workbooks in their classes and they are clearly brain washed (which is what all cults do to people). I grew up down the street from a JW family. They are very nice people and hard working but they do not believing in Jesus, the Son of God revealed in Scripture.

In talking to the JW's at my door, I take control - not only because they are standing on my property (don't forget about that!) - but because I know that they do not know Christ and therefore cannot possibly know the word of God. Do not let them lead the discussion from their memorized script and when you prove them wrong, do not let them just jump to another topic (as they have been instructed to do). Press on that particular error (heresy) and assure them that such a belief shows that they are not a child of God. Focus on their need of forgiveness for their sins through Jesus, the eternal God become Man. Long story short, after I had already told them they are enemies of Christ and stand condemned before him, more than once they have told (judged!) me "you sure do love God!" and "you know the Bible very well." If they really understood what they've been taught, they would never have said such things to me.

This book will help you and keep you on target.

I was wanting to learn more about the Jehovah's Witnesses. Book after book talks about the same sorrows. It is ashamed that this has not been put before the Witnesses. This is nothing else but a cult and it is hard to convert back to reality.

About the Author
Lee Bauknight is an instructor at Louisiana State University, where he teaches courses primarily in the University Writing Program. Lee completed his MFA in fiction at the University of South Carolina in 2002 and was associate director of the First-Year English Program there for five years and director of the Writing Center for one. As associate director, Lee helped redesign the first-year English curriculum with a focus on analysis and argumentation and helped train, mentor, and evaluate instructors and graduate teaching assistants. He also designed and edited five editions of THE CAROLINA READER, one of the textbooks used in the FYE Program. Before pursuing his MFA, he worked for more than a decade as an editor at newspapers in South Carolina and Georgia.

Brooke Rollins, an Assistant Professor of Rhetoric and a member of the graduate faculty at Louisiana State University, teaches courses in rhetoric, composition studies, writing, and critical theory. She received her Ph.D. in English, with a focus on rhetoric and composition studies, at the University of South Carolina in 2007. While at South Carolina, she served as an Assistant Director of the First-Year English Program and taught courses in composition, advanced composition, business writing, and rhetoric. Her work has appeared in COLLEGE ENGLISH, RHETORICA SOCIETY QUARTERLY, and THE VELVET LIGHT TRAP. She is currently working on a book called GHOSTWRITING ETHOS: BEYOND CHARACCTER AND CHARACTER BEYOND, which explores the classical rhetorical concept of ethos in Plato, Aristotle, Lysias, and Isocrates.

Not Really A "Book"

Pros: Cheap, short and an easy read.

Cons: Price still too high for material within (See below)

Overall:
This book helped me in class, which is the primary reason for getting it IMO. However, it is not worth the price that anyone asks for it. Only about half (if even that amount) of the book is actual text from the author(s), the rest is FREE articles used for analytical thinking. Yes free as in: already out there on various publications and the internet free. Why am I paying for a book that is virtually just articles slapped together by someone without any real work being done? I don't know. If you need this book for class, get it as cheaply as possible, because it will still be a waste of money. If you don't abosolutely need it, don't ever buy it.

Excellent and comprehensive reference

I found the book to be a worthy addition to the long line of high quality Wrox publications. First of all, it is comprehensive. The authors spend a lot of time covering as many aspects of 2012 Reporting Services as they can, beginning with installation and setup all the way through integration with custom application development. In addition, it's very well written and illustrated. While the writing style isn't compelling (is that even possible in a technical reference manual?), I found it to be very lucid and approachable. Screenshots were clear and complete, sequential items were numbered and emphasized, and call-outs were insightful and appropriate. Finally, the book is organized as a set of topical references with good cross-referencing, making it easy to dive into tangential details related to whichever section or topic you were primarily focused on.

The only thing that keeps the review from being a full five stars for me is, oddly enough, the appendices. Considering that the core content of the book was 2012 Reporting Services, the contents of the appendices seemed pretty unrelated, especially the TSQL reference. Regardless, I'm very glad my company has a copy of this book in our reference library!

Poorly written, poorly executed, not good for a beginner to SSRS.

This book is an abysmal disappointment. It does not explain concepts thoroughly in some instances, and in others it goes way too deep into the weeds when you're just trying to wrap your head around simple concepts. It is not a good book for a beginner (like I am) and the exercises are very hard to follow. The language in the book does not even match the product and the screenshots are very poor, making it next to impossible to successfully complete exercises unless you already know how the product works...in which case, what do you need the book for?

This book is a disappointment; Wrox is usually my go-to company to learn a new product but I am disappointed with this book. I'm only a quarter of the way through it and I'm ready to use it as a doorstop instead. Save your money.

Your time is precious

This book has it all. It shows you all the necessary entry points and pitfalls that you will encounter during the process. The steps in the lessons are clear and accurate for SQL Reporting Services 2012. This book is good for the novice to the professional. The programming side is very useful and I think lacking on some other books. If you are looking for a book to invest your time (which if very precious), then this is the book for you. I have used other books from other publisher but I always go back to Wrox. Overall this book is a time saver.

Very Helpful Teaching Tool

This book was very helpful for me as I am taking the ABCTE for teacher certification. One of the categories for learning in this program is Assessment. The book gives a great deal of the technical terms in which I needed to know. It starts out with the first 3 or 4 chapters as very complex and technical but later has many familiar teaching situations to help paint a better picture about assessment. It will definitely be a tool to go back through if I need help in assessment aspects.
