Read this series - it is up there with the best; trust me on this.

This is one of the best Epic Fantasy series I have read - and I have read pretty much all of the best from Tolkien to Robert Jordon's The Wheel of Time to Brandon Sanderson's full collection to name a few. It has everything you would want in this genre; the writing pulls me into another world of action, drama and intrigue. It is fast pace while at the same time having a many layered story line. Honestly I would recommend this series to anyone.

better than books one and two!

I read the first two books in this series earlier this year and, while they were fairly conventional hero's journey-type books with a lot of fantasy tropes, I liked them enough to keep going. And I think this book redeemed the series in a way I was not expecting. I will try to be vague to avoid spoilers, as best I can. Note: there may be some spoilers for previous books in the series in this review. You would want to read those first, before starting with this one. There are a LOT of characters in this series and it is best to encounter them as they are introduced in the previous books. You will have a much easier time keeping them straight.

One thing that has puzzled me about this series is why Corban was the Bright Star (a prophesied hero who will lead the forces of good...). Corban was just an average boy from a small village. Not the best fighter in the early books (in fact, in book one, his sister had to help him out of a few scrapes). Not of royal parentage. Etc. Well, that question is answered here and it is not at all what I expected (but is not pulled out of nowhere, either, and it does explain some actions another character has taken at various points). I actually love that revelation and its aftermath.

Another thing I like about this book are the parallels between Corban's and Nathair's (the human leader of one of the main forces antagonizing Corban's group) situations. Nathair, as we've come to realize, isn't the Bright Star he thought he was. He is royalty and was born to lead. He has an otherworldly adviser (as does Corban). He also gathers allies. In some sense, we always knew he was a bad egg, though. His animal companion is nasty and uncontrollable compared to Corban's. He uses unethical tactics to get what he wants. So he is obviously a bad guy. But...for the longest time, he *thought* he was a good guy. So he doesn't lose all sympathy (just a lot of it). And I legitimately don't know if he will redeem himself or not. I look forward to finding out.

As I said earlier, this book contains a lot of characters. For the most part, I don't have trouble telling them apart. (Uthas and Ulfilas being exceptions, simply because of the similarities between the names. I am not 100% sure I got the names right even now, but I don't have my Kindle nearby to check.) Gwynne actually does a pretty good job with this, considering the size of the cast.

Our heroes find themselves in a lot of trouble in this book. At first I was bemoaning the similarities of Maquin's (a former shieldman, giant-hunter, oarsman, and pit fighter, among other things) and Camlin's (a former forest bandit turned shieldman to a queen) situations. But they get out of their situations in different ways, and their enemies end up having different competencies or lack thereof. It wasn't the same thing twice. And both were set up well, with varying degrees of preparation in the story.

A lot of rivalries and conflicts from past books were brought up again here, with the storylines continuing. A couple of these were brought to a close, while others were allowed to continue. I'm glad to see some loose ends tied up, and not all left until the final volume. The story is still pretty expansive, but it is tightening.

We know a lot of the characters by now, but some of them continue to grow and change. Vonn (boy from Corban's village who has broken with his father) is given the opportunity to show conflicting emotions here in a way he didn't before. Cywen (Corban's sister) is still quite competent, but gains some new skills. Gar (a guardian of Corban's, basically) has to take on some new responsibilities. Lorcan (a spoiled prince from previous books) grows up and becomes someone whose fate I'm actually interested in. Corban continues on the expected path, but remains true to himself.

Some events were predictable. I have been waiting since book one for Veradis to do something and he has now done it. Some romances developed (or seem to be developing) along a predictable path. Now, romances predicted in past volumes have ended with character deaths, so I don't think everyone's out of the woods yet. We'll see.

In terms of writing style, world building, etc., if you liked these aspects of the first two books, you'll see more of the same here. It was kind of comforting and familiar to travel back to this world, actually. The only other complaint I have is that this book was long. Very long. I think the author did what he had to, to get to the endpoint he had in mind. So I'm not sure how it could be shortened.

Anyway, I wasn't sure what rating I would give this book until I started writing the review and realized there was a lot I liked about this book, especially compared to past volumes. I'm looking forward to the next one. 4.5 stars.

Just getting to work now at 7 am after 2 and half hours sleep last night because I could not stop reading until I finished this

Never actually write reviews. Had to take a min to say something after this one. Got hooked on fantasy books after I read GOT years ago and have gone through countless authors, books, and series since then looking for something that was so all engrossing that I literally couldn't put it down and captivated not only my imagination but allows for such emotional attachment to characters and story lines. Just getting to work now at 7 am after 2 and half hours sleep last night because I could not stop reading until I finished this one and I have realized that I finally found a series that I think is as good if not better than GOT. I'm sure people get sick of hearing, if you like this or that then this book is for you. I know I do. I'm not saying Martin sould be the gold standard for every fantasy fan but he has been so far for me. With that said, Gwynne has put himself, at the very least, on par with Martin and this last installment of this amazing series exceeded my expectations in every way. Can't wait for more for John Gwynne.

Thomas' series Seasons of Love. All of the books in this series are ...

Autumn Changes is the third book in B.G. Thomas' series Seasons of Love. All of the books in this series are stand alone books, but do yourself a favor and buy every book in the series. Read them in order. That way, you'll get to know and fall in love with each of the four main characters. Start with the first book, Spring Affair--- That's where you'll first meet all four of the main characters.---- Sloan, Scott, Asher, and (my personal favorite) Wyatt. In Spring Affair, you'll see the endearing love story of Sloan as he meets Max, his MR RIGHT. Then read Summer Love and and watch as Scott goes from being sad and cynical to open and caring when he meets the right man, Cedar. Then it's Asher's turn to fall in love in Autumn Changes. Those of us who've been reading these books from the very beginning never thought Asher would be able to fall in love. He was the guy who slept with every hot man he met, but then tossed them aside. But in Autumn Changes, Asher meets his match. A man who is able to get Asher to look at himself and finally realize that things in his past have made him build a wall around himself and not let his emotions out. At the same time, that wall won't let anyone IN. But when he starts seeing Peni, that wall chips slowly away. Mr Thomas doesn't cheat his readers. He doesn't simply let Asher's wall tumble down all at once. Thomas takes us through the process as the wall comes down brick by brick. And as some of those bricks fall, you will find yourself with tears in your eyes and a lump in your throat.
Yes, Thomas' books usually do have a happy ending. But those endings are never trite of too easily accomplished. The four main characters in these books work hard to reach their happy endings.

AND.......Thomas is a master at doing research. His books are never just boy-meets-boy/ boy-falls in love with- boy stories, He fleshes out his plots with REAL locations, REAL cultures, REAL live theater productions, and more. In Autumn Changes, we're introduced to the Samoan culture. It's an interesting, exciting culture to learn about. I, myself, know a lot of Samoan people because I live on Maui where the population is very cosmopolitan...........every culture imaginable lives here in harmony on our island. It was wonderful to learn so much about the Samoan culture through the character of Peni and his family.

If you've read any of my other reviews of B.G. Thomas' books, you already know that he's my favorite author. He takes the gay romance genre and brings it to a new level. Too many authors of gay romance grind out book after book that follow a cookie-cutter pattern. And those books rely too heavily on the sex scenes. To all you authors out there, I say-- WE NEED MORE PLOT AND LESS SEX. We want to care about the characters. We want to believe in the characters. We want to love the characters. Take a lesson from Mr Thomas and learn to make your characters three-dimensional and believable.

Now the wait begins...........for those of us who have already read the first 3 books in the Seasons of Love series, NOW WE ALL WANT TO READ WYATT'S STORY! I have the feeling you saved Wyatt's story for last, Mr Thomas, because you know that ALL OF US love Wyatt the most!!

Keep up the fantastic writing, Mr Thomas. I will keep reading EVERYTHING you write!!!!

Loved “Autumn Changes” by B.g. Thomas!

This is the third book in the Seasons of Love series where a group of four friends each experience a journey to finding love. The books are a part of a series that work as standalones stories, but also interconnect with each other and share the same characters throughout.

“Autumn Changes” tells the story of two men: Asher and Peni. Asher was featured in the previous two books as being unlikable because of his ego, constant drinking and using men only for sex. Peni has objections to alcohol and agrees to go out with Asher if he promises not to drink for 30 days. During this time, Asher realizes how hollow his life has become and had been using alcohol to suppress painful memories from his past.

Peni, a young Samoan man, was brought up as a Mormon and basically taught that homosexuality is a sin. He struggles to accept himself, but also wants to honor his Samoan heritage in becoming a man. Asher and Peni come together to support one another in their own journeys of self-discovery.

The writing is incredibly well-done and you really feel like these characters are real people going through real struggles in their lives. Asher and Peni go through real heartache and a lot of hard work to become the better men that they need to become.

A tremendous amount of research went into this story. Facts about Judaism, Mormonism, the Samoan language and the Samoan culture are featured prominently throughout the story. It gives an interesting and insightful look into other cultures and religions and shows how diverse people are.

I will say it’s not as good as “Summer Lover”, but it comes very close. I can’t wait to read the final book in the series where we will see the last friend, Wyatt (my personal favorite!), find true love.

Beautiful, surprising, and touching

This was a story that grabbed me from the first page and held my attention throughout. I couldn’t put it down. There are so many wonderful elements, from the well-crafted plot to the range of emotions. This was definitely one that hit every one of my reading sweet spots.

Asher is a character who begins the story as lovably hateful. What makes him such a delight to read is that everyone around him is keenly aware of how awful he is–everyone but himself, that is. Watching him unfold and heal from his scars was funny and beautiful and heartbreaking. His admittance of his need to change left me in tears of relief and happiness.

Peni, in contrast, is a gentle, honest man. What I loved was learning about Samoan culture through him and how he was able to heal from his own scars. His self-discovery is vastly different from Asher’s, but it’s equally wonderful sharing his triumph at finding his place among friends and celebrating his heritage.

These two men enjoy a slow yet surprising journey toward each other. For me, it was exactly the right pacing for both the love story and the physical culmination of their union. Everything about it left me wanting more.

Although this is part of a series, it was easy to enjoy it as a stand-alone. I’m so glad I took a chance and picked this one up.

Later, when I was a graduate student in 1955, he reactivated and deepened these workings. During the years after studying with him his words have returned to haunt me. So far as I know, he is unaware of my intellectual debt; I should like to record it now.

In working on my doctoral dissertation I delved into the collective protests of the British working classes in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. In trying to decipher the content and timing of these eruptions, I came to be deeply impressed with the explanatory potential of a distinctively sociological approach. The idea of attempting a theoretical synthesis of collective behavior came to me in the summer of 1958. Since then I have worked continually on this volume.

Between 1959 and 1961 I was a member of the Center for Integrated Social Science Theory at the University of California, Berkeley. Known familiarly as the Theory Center, this group consisted of six or seven scholars from various departments. Each member was relieved of academic duties for one semester in each of his two years in the Center. At meetings we discussed theoretical issues arising from the work of one or more members. We had no office for meetings; we wandered peripatetically from one member's study to another. We had no secretary, no research assistants, no stationery with letterhead. Simple as it was, the Theory Center had unparalleled value. With the advance of academic specialization in the mid-twentieth century, few things can be more salutary than to have scholars take temporary leave from the confines of their research projects to discover the minds of others in an unhurried atmosphere.

In the Theory Center we read one another's work with great care and did not fear to fire broadsides when the occasion demanded. My work on collective behavior received and gained immensely from merciless criticism.

This book provides insights to many current events

In the early 1960s I took a course taught by Professor Smelser who was a very dynamic and inspiring teacher. At the same time, I was also taking a course on Collective Behavior which was taught from a prepublication copy of this book. About 3 years later we had an example of collective behavior at UC Berkeley called the Free Speech Movement. During a confrontation in front of the campus Administration building, I saw Professor Smelser sitting in an 2nd floor window ledge observing an interesting example of collective behavior and his theory. His Theory of Collective Behavior is a very valuable tool for understanding much about historical events such as the millennial movements of the Middle Ages to more resent events such as the demonstrations in Cairo to Occupy Wall Street.

Comprehensive theory and empirical verification

The essence of Smelser's analysis is that social movements form under conditions of grievances. They range from 'value-oriented' movements, which aim to change the whole society (revolution) to 'norm-oriented' movements that aim to change some subsystem of society ('women' liberation'). At a more personal level, 'collective'-oriented' social movements aim to change attitudes ("therapy') and role-oriented social movements aim to introduce new role behavior ('education'). This sequence -- value, norm, collectivity, and role -- corresponds to Parsons' analysis of social structure. Grievances result in collective beliefs and movements range from panics, crazes, hostile outbursts, and norm- and value-oriented movements. Movements form a system that may end in little change (like a panic or a craze -- 'occupy Wall Street') or may result in violence (outbursts) and long-range social change (to norms and values). The nature of the movement and its results depend on 'facilities,' or the state of society. Smelser presents detailed empirical data to verify the theoretical concepts, covering the whole range of historical movements. His empirical verifications of Parsons' theoretical paradigm clarify many of Parsons' concepts in a theory that went far beyond the publication of this book in 1962. Reading Smelser's book rewards much more than poor secondary interpretations that have an axe to grind about Parsons, such as you may find on 'Wikipedia.'

A coffee table book that makes you forget the coffee.

One way to judge my opinion of this book is for me to remember that I have read it and reread it many times. It is a fascinating look into the working spaces of some of the greatest artists of the 20th Century. The photos are usually Liberman's own and while good, they are not usually "fine art". However, they do provide glimpses into places few have been, and that now no longer exist. Do I recommend it? Try borrowing mine--sorry! A companion piece is another book entitled, "Latin American Artists in Their Studios". The photos were taken by professionals and they look it. Both books are worthy of study for serious art enthusiasts. For more info on Liberman, read "Alex", the story of his life.

MUST, I REALLY Must salute this perhaps dated, but CLASSIC of a book about artists..

Growing up in an ignorant town in Alabama

Artistically inclined , and with little inspiration

THIS was a delicious eye-opener

Chock full of insightful interviews

and photos of these artists in their studios, lovingly documented, down to their palettes.

This is a soul ful, delectable book about artists .

I heartilly urge, especially art students to just GRAB this, without hesitation ...

The Artist in his Studio

This is a wonderful book full of extraordinary photos of artists and Lieberman's accounts of his meetings with them. They almost leap out of the pages at you because he brings them so much alive, both in his anecdotes and his pictures. I don't know any other book which makes me feel that I know these talented people, as if I had just met them, and I keep going back into the book to meet them again. A really good present for any artist or art lover.

Les Miserables, anime version.

This is a book I wanted to like, but the more I read, the faster I read, just to be done with it. It struck me as Les Mis, done in anime. The various faces of Julian are stark and narrowly drawn, with so little transition between faces and little insight into his being that one can scarcely reconcile one image with the other, let alone see some internal transition toward repentance. The narrator was little more than a cardboard cutout propped up by a few cursory claims of faith.

Still, Wangerin's talent pops out sporadically, enough that I'd try another book of his. But with this one, I was left with the feeling that Wangerin simply did not take the time to write as he seems capable of writing.

Medeval, Christian, and a Man, a Hunter of the forest.

"Saint Julian", by Walter Wangerin Jr., is now 4 years old but I'm glad I came across it. It's a good fictional story of a man who would become a Saint. He is the finest hunter of all time, and becomes the greatest knight of all time, and then life takes it's toll with him. He falls into poverty, somewhat by his own design, but is Sainted because of his unfailing devotion to helping those in need, even to the very end of his breath. He bestows mercy.

The story of Saint Julian (aka: Red Knight, Ferryman) is told by a minor cleric who is being tested by his own aging but faithful in researching all he can find on the life of Julian for preservation. He learns of the curse put upon Julian, finds the facts, and records them for the reader.

Frequently, a sentence is placed in Latin, sometimes rephrased in English, sometimes not. It adds a bit of color to the telling, even if the translation is missing.

This is not a typical Medieval tale. Here's a book that should not be overlooked by male readers.

In the Grip of Addictive Sin

Wangerin has done a powerful job describing the effects of sin in a life that's not totally given over to Christ. Julian typifies the believer whose belief is only through cultural heritage and not a heart change. This book chronicles the depths that sin will take us...to the end of our very self, where Christ will be waiting after we ineffectively try to deal with all our shame and self loathing. It occurs to me that the problem is addiction and the recovery process is through Christ alone. This book had the same effect on me as Frank Perreti's book "The Oath". Very convicting. Well worth the read.

One of the best Stata books on the market

I purchased this book several months ago, and I absolutely love it. Not only do the authors describe the syntax commands needed for analyses, they go one step further - they explain what the analyses actually mean. This is a great book for novice and advanced Stata users alike.

I was very impressed when one of the authors of this publication (David Pevalin) promptly responded to questions I had about the book. I believe both of the authors are very committed to going above and beyond in helping readers fully understand this incredibly powerful statistical package. This is a "must-purchase" for all Stata users - regardless of familiarity with the program.

Well-written introduction to Stata

Software manual writers would do well to pay attention to the style and content of this excellent introduction to Stata, which assumes no prior use of the software. It is concise, yet really does an outstanding job introducing the beginner to this powerful software package. What is really needed is for the publisher to arrange for a new edition to allow the newer features of versions 12/13 to be demonstrated.
