Keeping this object in view, some of the tales, as well as a certain part of the original work, seemed to be of special interest only to the Danish colonies, and have therefore been wholly omitted, or only given in an abridged form, in the present publication.

The wholly modern study of "prehistoric man," which in our time is making such progress, has hitherto almost exclusively been founded upon the study of the ornaments, weapons, and other remains of primitive peoples, which for this purpose have become greatly valued, and are searched for in the bowels of the earth, and drawn forth to light in nearly every part of the globe. But the time will certainly come when any relics of spiritual life brought down to us from, prehistoric mankind, which may still be found in the folklore of the more isolated and primitive nations, will be valued as highly as those material remains. In this respect the Eskimo may be considered among the most interesting, both as having been almost entirely cut off from other nations and very little influenced by foreign intercourse, and also as representing a kind of link between the aboriginals of the New and the Old World.

Some illustrations, designed as well as drawn and engraved on wood by natives of Greenland, are given, the author having supplied the original blocks to be used in this edition for this purpose.

Loved the book, great stories, great content, explained so you can actually implement

I loved the stories, the irreverent tone, and the honesty of this book. But what I appreciated most was that it delivered on its title - this book really does simplify what you have to do successfully acquire new customers. Here are my highlights from this book:

The Stories - Frank, the overpaid account manager, who almost screwed up a huge sale because he did not understand that a sales presentation is a dialogue not a monologue. The founder of SlimFast flying into a sales presentation on his Gulfstream and providing some billionaire-level sales wisdom to his eager sales rep. The receptionist who considered the sales manager to be her personal assistant. These and many other stories in the book made me laugh, made the author's points well, and made this an enjoyable read.

Chapter 3 - Before Weinberg gets into his system for creating better sales hunters, he points out that the CEO is supposed to set strategy for a company, not the sales force. I share his amazement at how often executives don't do this. Weinberg explains why it is so important in this chapter.

Chapter 4, page 49: Weinberg's description of the New Sales Driver is straightforward and helpful. These are three simple points for establishing a new sales initiative. I think this information is also helpful as a simple diagnostic for figuring out where your current new business sales efforts can be improved.

Chapter 5 - Selecting Targets. Many sales people aren't using target lists well (or at all), and this chapter lays out exactly how to put one together and work it. Everyone knows they should have this list, but a much smaller group of people actually put it in place and work it. Weinberg lays out a well-constructed set of steps here to develop your own workable targets. He's also got some good insights about why failing to create a well-targeted list contributes to a lack of perseverance among sales hunters.

Chapters 7 and 8 - These chapters are a fantastic, step-by-step explanation of how to construct a sales story that becomes the backbone of every communication with prospects and referral sources. These chapters alone make this book worth the price of admission. I love the quote on page 89 decrying the over-emphasized `elevator pitch': "The last time I checked, there was not a whole lot of business being transacted in elevators." The author's Sales Story system takes the elevator pitch to a whole new level. I am already thinking this through for my own business.

Chapter 9 "Your Friend the Phone" is all about the lost art of picking up the phone, connecting with prospects, and opening up new business relationships. It provides practical specifics around approach, wording, and the proper way to construct a sales script. I specifically noted Weinberg's advice on page 113 about not over qualifying.

Chapter 11 on structuring winning sales calls. This chapter also stands out because of its simple, step-by-step process, this time for how to conduct a great face-to-face sales call. Weinberg shows how the Sales Story we have just constructed pays off when you are in-person with a prospect. He's got another great story here on what not to do on face-to-face sales calls. And, on pages 139 and following the author walks us through a well-conducted sales call from beginning to end. Very useful.

Chapter 13 on Sales Presentations. This is a great discussion of what to do and definitely not to do when conducting the ubiquitous and often deadly PowerPoint presentation in a sales context. Check out the very well done sample script on page 175 and the opening objectives on page 178.

In addition, this book has brief but important discussions of time blocking (pages 183-185) and individual business planning (pages 188-191). Anyone who has ever been on commission understands that these are the steps that turn an intellectual understanding of sales into actual results. Again, these are the simple but complete steps that make great business books like this one so useful.

Focused, direct, truthful!

As a 20+ year veteran of radio advertising sales, I am always looking for ways to increase my "billing"! The information that Mr. Weinberg shares in this book isn't new, it isn't a "big secret" revealed, a lot of the ideas he shares we have all heard before. But his delivery, his brutally direct and truthful discussions are spot on. We all need to be reminded of what it takes to grow our business. Whether you are a brand new rookie, or you've been in the trenches a long time, this book will help you get focused.

A Valuable Read for Anyone in Sales!

Any book that starts off with the author saying "I love sales" is certainly going to be an in-depth book on sales.

The author Mike Weinberg doesn't disappoint, but what makes this book different is its lack of complexity. Early on in the book Mike shares his story of how he went from selling for an established company to Walmart to a new company where he was truly selling without a net.

His frankness in sharing not just this story but many more throughout the book allows the reader to connect with the author.

Yes, I was fortunate enough to be given an early copy of the book and in so doing wound up being quoted in the book for saying how this is a book you read with a highlighter in hand and a pad of paper because of the notes you'll be taking.

The methodologies Mike presents when it comes to prospecting is excellent. Early in the book he presents a list he calls "Not so Sweet 16." It's his list of 16 reasons why salespeople fail at prospecting. Reading this list alone makes the book worth the price. Better yet are the ways he shares to help you succeed at prospecting.

There is no way anyone in sales could read this book and not wind up not being a better salesperson afterward.

Thanks to Mike for demystifying the prospecting process and giving all of us the insights of his experience.

About the Author

Dr. Warren J. Keegan. Dr. Keegan is Distinguished Professor of Marketing and International Business and Director of the Institute for Global Business Strategy at the Lubin School of Business, Pace University, New York City and Westchester. He is Visiting University Professor, Cranfield School of Management (UK), CEIBS (China European International Business School) Shanghai, the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania Executive Programs, and ESSEC, Cergy - Pontoise (France). He is the founder of Warren Keegan Associates, Inc., a consulting consortium of experts in global strategic management and marketing and Keegan & Company LLP, a firm specializing in litigation support. The firm is affiliated with MarkPlus, the leading marketing consulting firm of Indonesia.

Dr. Keegan is the author of many books. His text, Global Marketing Management, Seventh Edition (2002, Prentice Hall, Inc.) is recognized as the leading Global Marketing text for M.B.A. courses around the world. He is a Lifetime Fellow of the Academy of International Business, Individual Eminent Person (IEP) Appointed by Asian Global Business Leaders Society (other awardees include: Noel Tichy, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, and Gary Wendt). His biography is listed in Marquis Who's Who in America. He is a member of the International Advisory Board of Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC), Montreal; the Editorial Advisory Board, Cranfield School of Management; and Financial Times Management Monograph Series and is a current or former director of The S.M. Stoller Company, Inc., The Cooper Companies, Inc. (NYSE), InterAd, Inc., American Thermal Corporation, Inc., Halfway Houses of Westchester, Inc., Wainwright House, and The Rye Arts Center.

Dr. Mark C. Green. Dr. Green is Professor of Management and Marketing at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, where he teaches courses in management, marketing, advertising, international marketing, innovation, and Russian language. He earned his B.A. degree in Russian literature from Lawrence University, M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Russian linguists from Cornell University and an M.B.A. degree in marketing management from Syracuse University.

In addition to co-authoring Global Marketing, Fourth Edition with Warren Keegan, Dr. Green has also contributed case studies and chapter materials to several other textbooks published by Prentice Hall. These include: Advertising Principles and Practices, Fourth Edition, by William Wells, John Burnett, and Sandra Moriarty (1997); Behavior in Organizations, Sixth Edition, by Jerald Greenberg and Robert Baron (1996); Business, Fourth Edition, by Ricky Griffin and Ronald Ebert (1995); and Principles of Marketing by Warren Keegan, Sandra Moriarty, and Thomas Duncan (1992). Dr. Green has also written essays on technology and global business that have appeared in the Des Moines Register and other newspapers.

Dr. Green has traveled to the former Soviet Union on numerous occasions. In 1995 and 1996, he participated in a grant project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and presented marketing seminars to audiences in Nizhny Novgorod. In addition, Dr. Green has served as a consultant to several Iowa organizations that have business and cultural ties with Russia and other former Soviet republics. Dr. Green has lectured in Russia and Ukraine on topics relating to emerging market economies. His 1992 monograph, Developing the Russian Market in the 1990s, received an award from the Iowa-based International Network on Trade.

In 1997, Dr. Green was the recipient of Simpson College's Distinguished Research and Writing Award. Dr. Green also received the 1995 Distinguished Teaching Award for senior faculty. In 1990, he was the recipient of Simpson's Excellence in Teaching Award for junior faculty. He also received the 1988 Outstanding Faculty of the Year awarded by the Alpha Sigma Lambda adult student honorary at Simpson College.

Purchasing Options for Global Marketing Textbook

Very up-to-date-textbook with real world scenarios. I wanted to purchase this book as an e-book. The great disappointment I have with this book is the publisher chose not to enable "text to speech". I also was about to purchase the Kindle Fire when I discovered the book did not have this feature. Why should I purchase the Kindle Fire or all new generations Kindle if the books I purchase do not have the "text to speech " feature enabled?

I bought this for an International Marketing course which actually required the 6th edition. Instead of paying $90+ for the newer version, I paid about ten dollars. The page numbers are different from the new version but the content is almost exactly the same. Most of the case studies in this book are the same as in the new version, but there are two are three in the 6th edition that aren't in this edition. I haven't had any troubles using this edition in place of the newer one. The book arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Glad I saved a ton of money without sacrificing quality or content.

The words of the prophets

Like the other books in this series, 'Handbook on the Prophets' is a highly useful and accessible text. Baker Book House also published 'Handbook on the Pentateuch' many years ago, which has become a widely read book, and 'Handbook on the Historical Books' just a few years ago. Chisholm's book is a welcome part of this collection.
This is not a verse by verse commentary on the prophetic books of the Hebrew scripture. Rather, this is a more general commentary that looks as pericopes (logical blocks of text that flow together) as units. Each chapter (or, in the case of the minor prophets, sub-chapter) has an introduction that gives the basic historical and social background, pertinent linguistic and literary information, and general structural and contextual themes.
The longest chapter, as befits its subject among the prophets, is on Isaiah. This gives a good indication of the kind of commentary Chisholm produces. In the discussion on the authorship of Isaiah, he puts forward the theory that the author of 'First Isaiah' (Isaiah 1-39) is different from the author of 'Second Isaiah' (Isaiah 40-66); perhaps there is even an 'Third Isaiah' (Isaiah 56-66) distinct from the other two. However, Chisholm prefers the more traditional idea that there is but one author of Isaiah. Rather than dealing with the multiple-author theory, he rather sets it forward as a scholarly possibility, but concentrates his writing on the single-author text. From this, one can see from this that Chisholm's interpretative framework is a more traditional and conservative one, but not one that does excludes alternatives.
One of the strengths of this text lies in the bibliographies -- this commentary is not a book by scholars for scholars, but does not ignore that consideration. After each section there are bibliographies of commentaries and of recent studies. Chisholm tends to include works published after the 1980s, so this is a good snapshot of work done in the past decade.
This book is really aimed for the working minister, the individual and group-studying bible reader, and perhaps undergraduate students. It avoids the most advanced and technical language that tends to be the exclusive province of professional scholars and graduate students, yet it does not condescend or lack for insight because of this.

A commentary for all

Chisholm's commentary proved insightful and will be a good resource for me in the future regarding my studies in The Word. I look forward to reading some more of his work now that I am a little more familiar with his hermeneutical slant and doctrinal leanings.

The overall outlines of each prophetical book was helpful. However, he or the editor grouped the Minor Prophets in one large heading which made it difficult to reference them as single books (the tops of the pages only said "Minor Prophets" and not the specific minor prophet). Even so, the outlines of some of the books by Chisholm were unique when compared to other scholars' outlines, making it helpful to see the book more comprehensively.

Chisholm made helpful textual analyses throughout his commentary, citing various places where questionable translating occurred in certain versions (often the NIV). He also showed his acumen analyzing the Hebrew text itself. These were often very technical footnotes which would be of value, I would assume, for those who are well versed in studying the ancient Hebrew text.

His one leaning that seemed questionable, though, was his tendency that seemed to generalize large portions of prophetical scripture as merely language used for exaggerated effect. It is not that Chisholm did not evaluate and comment on various opinions on texts that he believed were better off seen as exaggerations - he did take time to do this. However, in some cases his stance to see certain passages as merely "exaggerations for effect" seemed to ignore or not account better for specific details that implicitly seemed to require more of an explanation that one of hyperbole.

The other bittersweet part of Chisholm's commentary is his desire, it seems, to allow for beginning level students of The Word taste The Word fully. For those who have perhaps spent a couple years in study of Scripture (like myself), some of his comments seemed redundant. Even so, he would at other times jump from redundant comments about God's work in the past (which should never get old J) and then discuss deep theological tenets and textual issues, grabbing the attention of the more novice reader, perhaps even advanced.

I will be likely referencing this book in the future and look forward to reading more Chisholm. His bibliography at the end of each book is also helpful. It is a valuable and insightful resource to see the number of articles and commentaries out there on The Prophets.

Throughout the semester the text Chisholm's Handbook on the prophets has been a valuable resource for me as far as research and collecting a different opinion goes. This book offers a thorough and insightful introduction for any student studying the Old Testament Prophetic literature. Rather than attempting to provide a detailed verse-by-verse commentary, this handbook focused on the prevailing themes and central messages of the prophetic books. In the text, Chisholm starts every chapter with a brief analysis of the historical and social setting of the book under discussion. Chisholm works his way through the writings describing the structure, content, and important concepts found in the text. Chisholm made it vital to examine and review critical issues whenever they are important for the interpretation of a particular passage. However, he focused more broadly on the theological themes that characterize the work as a whole. Students in seminary and of the advanced biblical studies would find this volume enlightening and extremely helpful as they make their way through the prophetical books. This handbook on the prophets will also be a good resource for pastors and teachers to use in their teaching and research of this portion of scripture.
