Using the most up to date cartographic and innovative design techniques, the maps break new ground in illuminating the history of Islam.

About the Author

Peter Sluglett is Director of the Middle East Institute at the National University of Singapore. A historian of the Arab provinces of the Ottoman Empire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and of the modern states of Iraq, Lebanon and Syria, he has taught Middle Eastern history at the University of Durham, England, and at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. In 2012–13 he was President of the Middle East Studies Association of North America.

Andrew Currie is director of his own independent cartographic consultancy, Creative Viewpoint. A geography graduate of the University of Edinburgh, with a distinction in cartography, he continued post-graduate studies and hands-on application in map-making sciences at the University of Glasgow in the 1960s. He has since worked on a wide range of cartographic productions with several leading publishers of maps and atlases in the U.K. and the Middle East. He considers the Atlas of Islamic History to be his most satisfying and most challenging cartographic design project, since it takes account of all four dimensions - including mapping change through time.

Much More than a Horse Story

I'm not much of a horse story girl. Aside from some chapter books I read with my daughter when she was in 3rd grade about little girls with ponies, I haven't read a horse book since Black Beauty when I was in 3rd grade myself. Still, the cover of this book is alluring, and I'd heard a lot about it, so I gave it a shot. So glad I did. It is a great summer camp story. It's got all the things you would expect of an all girls' equestrian camp, snotty rich girls, that cool odd ball, and of course the new girl who is so darned curious. On top of all of that there is this mystery about a girl who went missing 5 years ago and is presumed dead, except Brynlei keeps seeing someone in the woods that looks like her. Is it really the girl? Is it a ghost? She is determined to find out. I was going to give this book 4 stars for just being a good, solid YA mystery, but then I got to the final 3rd of the book where the mystery finally unravels. From that point on the drama and tension had me on pins and needles to the very end. I wanted to know how it was all going to turn out and if everyone that I came to love so much in this book were going to be okay. So... 5 stars for hooking me in. A nice clean read, perfect for ages 12 and up. Highly recommend! And double recommend if you love horses.

A fun twist you will never see coming!

This book was a fun, easy read. Great for teens or adults. As a non-rider, I didn't understand a lot of the horse terminology that was heavily included throughout the book, but it was interesting and even a little educational. The ending well…. wow. Didn't see it coming and it kept twisting even after I thought I had it all figured out! I love a good mystery that I don't quickly guess the ending of. I will definitely recommend.

When I pick up a book to read, I want to be engrossed in the story and carried away. I hope the storyline will take me someplace else, grab my attention, and keep it. It’s even better when I learn something new or venture away from my normal routine in reading. Trail of Secrets was all of this for me. I don’t usually read mysteries, but this book was very enjoyable and it took me to another place. I almost felt like I was at the riding camp and knew these characters. I found myself thinking about them during the days when I was not even reading the book! The author painted such a detailed picture of the characters’ personalities that you could really relate to the interactions between them. As others have mentioned, I knew nothing about riding and haven’t been around horses much…but I found the equestrian language and tactics intriguing. It was not over-emphasized, just introduced enough to seem very credible and add to the authenticity. It gave a glimpse into the sport/hobby of these girls and the knowledge they need to ride at that level. Anyways, the mystery aspect of the book was fun and a little wild – there are unexpected twists. This is a great novel for teens or adults, and a good book to use even to introduce a young adult to mystery. I recommend it and I would look forward to reading another novel by this author if a sequel follows! Really, four and a half stars.

H. Emilie Cady (1848–1941) was an American homeopathic physician and author of New Thought spiritual writings. LESSONS IN TRUTH
I asked one of my closest friends (Rev. Rose M. Cooper, P.H.D.), a Minister in Unity to provide me some insight on what the movement was about and why so many people seemed to be turning towards it for leadership and spirituality. She provided me this book (Lessons In Truth), multiple visits to worship with her and many discussions where she expressed her beliefs and opinions. The book brought many of our past discussions and activities I had witnessed to a level that became more clear. One example of this is in Unity God is within you and therefore part of you. Your growth and direction come from within and not from a separate entity outside of our bodies and spirits. The single eye on God is another great example. This book was written by Dr. H. Emilie Cady and it is very clear that her mind was focused. Her belief allowed her to look beyond the traditional approach mankind uses. For example, in both medicine and spirituality, she could look beyond the traditional approaches. She knew that through the beliefs of Unity that the physical, mental and spirituality (any condition in life) could be addressed, healing would occur on all levels (divine healing). In my opinion, Dr. Cady had a tremendous amount of wisdom, knowledge and God directed activity in her life.
Lessons In Truth has a study guide at the end of each chapter. The lessons are an excellent review and doing them will ensure you do understand the meanings and gain a true feeling for what metaphysical Christianity is. You will find in this book that the author was invited by Myrtle and Charles Fillmore , the founders of Unity, to write for them in 1892. Dr. Harriet Emilie Cady accepted. Readers demand for her writings and ultimately a simple course of lessons on the principles of divine healing, led Charles Fillmore to have them reprinted in a series of booklets. In 1903 the Lessons In Truth was published in book format. As of 1999, the fifty-first printing, the book has been translated into eleven languages and over a million and half copies have been sold.
Today, I am Methodist and have been for 20 years. I transitioned from a Baptist when I was 32. Methodist and Baptist belief's being very close to each other and different than Unity caused me to challenge my beliefs and weigh the differences very close. I believe it is urgently important for mankind to search deep within and to challenge his beliefs and actions regularly. I further believe this review and challenge process will keep man and woman walking closer to the path that they believe and will assist them in verbalizing their beliefs if and when they desire to express themselves. Lessons In Truth presents this challenge and leaves you thinking and asking many questions. Reading this book, you will gain an understanding of the principles of the New Thought movement in general and Unity in particular. Excellent fast read book and optional study guide. I highly recommend it for anyone attempting to gain an understanding of the unity movement or anyone walking within the faith.

Dr. Cady was a physician as well as metaphysician and her book is studied by thousands of Truth students all over the world. It has been translated into many languages and braille. Twelve chapters include Faith, Affirmations, Thinking, Spiritual Understanding, Statement of Being, and more. "The light that you so crave will come out of the deep silence and become manifest to you from within yourself, if you will but keep still and look for it from that source." (93)

A down-to-earth explanation of basic spiritual laws

Emilie Cady was a remarkable woman; a true pioneer both professionally (she was a homeopathic physician in the late 1800's)and spiritually. Her understanding of metaphysical law, based in Christian theology, is clearly and profoundly stated in language any one can understand. I personally experienced a "spiritual quickening" while reading Lesson 11 on spiritual gifts. Her understanding of desire, its source and manifestation, clarified this issue for me and resonates as Truth. This book will benefit any truth-seeker, no matter what your religious affiliation is; truth is truth in whatever language you understand. Her writing style reminds me of Peace Pilgrim and I would recommend Peace's "Twelve Steps to Inner Peace."I also would recommend "The Light Shall Set You Free" by Dr. Norma Milanovich and Dr. Shirley McCune, as well as "Jesus Christ Heals" by Charles Fillmore.

Boooooooo! Hisssssss!

I'm beginning to detect a pattern in these so-called "accelerated-learning" books. For one thing, their authors seem to be using them to greater or lesser degrees as platforms from which to hawk their seminars and mail-order courses. For another, they all have a gimmick. For instance, Tony Buzan's is "Mind Mapping," Paul Scheele's is "PhotoReading," Wim Wenger's is "Image Streaming"...and Rose's/Nicholl's is Acronyms. Sometimes these gimmicks work--as in the case of Buzan's--and sometimes they're pure snake oil (PhotoReading).
I wouldn't go so far as to call this book snake oil...but I also wouldn't go so far as to call it useful, either. There is very little fresh, useful information here. I have found better information in other books (try Buzan's--his books also smack of hucksterism, but they *do* contain some useful information and techniques). Aside from the "learning maps" technique (that is, Mind Mapping), there is very little here that will seem like more than very basic common sense to even the most mediocre of intellects. In other words, if you're absolutely helpless when it comes to learning, this book might help. If you're hoping, however, that this book will help you more readily absorb material in your graduate Victorian Poetry seminar, forget it.
This book is heavy on background information--research, sanitized for lay people. The instruction the give in analytical thinking is laughable. My impression is that the target audience is for the most part corporations...and I have to ask, "Do they really think business executives and secretaries are so stupid?" Here's their "learning strategy" for problem-solving:

Then they go on to expand on these hard-to-grasp concepts. Much of the book consists of this type of pablum.
The front cover declares that this book will help you "Master a foreign language with ease." Guess what their instruction consists of...An ENTIRE CHAPTER devoted to peddling their language course. That's it! Unbelievable! They devote several more pages at the end of the book to peddle their program, too.
This is a TERRIBLE book. Anyone who says otherwise is probably working for the publisher! You've been warned.

Some Strategies Just Repackaged

Loads of hype and salespitch! The methods described in this book are fairly flexible, but they are so hyped up that it is not easy to cope with the dissapointment after the hype. The only good part of their story is the "search for meaning" section of the MASTER learning method that goes some way to promoting thinking before memory.

There are tons of stories and anecdotes in the pages that have already been debunked, and a good amount of serious salesmanship.

One warning though! I did do a websearch on the company and found that they are currently being prosecuted for advertising against the trades descriptions act in the UK. They claimed falsly to be able to teach a foreigh language within just a few hours, amongst other such nonsense.

Lots of dodgy sales methods, but no real payback!

Since Marie Higgins was a little girl playing Barbies with her sister, Stacey, she has loved the adventure of making up romantic stories. Marie was only eighteen years old when she wrote her first skit, which won an award for Funniest Skit. A little later in life, after she’d married and had children, Marie wrote Church roadshows that were judged as Funniest and Best Written. From there, she branched out to write full-length novels based on her dreams. (Yes, she says, her dreams really are that silly) Marie has been married for twenty-six years to a wonderful man. Pirates on Land

I really enjoyed this book. This was the first book I have read from this author. I know this is a second in the series, but I was in no way lost in the story line. I love pirate stories (my favorites by MaryLu Tyndall) and this was great that this was a pirate turned highwayman. I enjoyed the interactions between the hero and the heroine. I also like the fact that the heroine knew she needed the hero's help sometimes. Great twists and turns that I really didn't see coming. The title fits the story so well. You will have to read it to find out why. This was a clean adult read. Looking forward to more from this author expecially her new paranormal.

This was terribly written. The plot was juvenile and the dialogue unrealistic. Many of the plot devices strained credulity to the breaking point. The "hero's" actual actions were not fully explained. To whom was he giving the information he found if not to the Sons of Liberty? Add that to many editing errors and the fact that the author apparently forgot the plot, at one point stating the the girl was held captive on a ship when she was held at a house, and it made for a terrible read. The only reason that I continued reading as long as I did was that I was in a waiting room with nothing else but ancient magazines and books I had already read on my Kindle.

Great book!!!

A great book that you need to read!! I love Marie Higgins though my personal favorite is Winning Mr. Wrong. If you don't have that one I would suggest getting it. You can't go wrong with on of her books. This one will keep you guessing until the very end!
