Advertising Concept and Copy Remains Relevant

Granted advertising as we know it is in the midst of major changes. Message based ads are less and less effective. Agencies and their clients are turning to utility, social media, co-creation, trans media story telling and a host of new ways to overcome consumer indifference as they strain for some of that elusive and scarce attention.

So right off the bat a book titled Advertising Concept and Copy sounds old and dated. But there remains much that is relevant in George Felton's book. The idea that you have to develop a very focused strategy based on knowledge of your product and consumer. The conviction that you still have to find a clever way to get noticed and remembered. The understanding that to invent creative solutions you have to master the skill of looking at a product from a multitude of perspectives.

As an original partner and long-term creative director (ECD, CCO) at Mullen, and now a professor of advertising at Boston University, I still believe that learning how to craft smart, relevant, clever advertising is a foundation for any aspect of advertising today -- traditional, social, digital, or experiential. Learning to identify a problem, develop a brief, explore a range of potential solutions and acquire the standards, taste and judgment to select an idea that will resonate with customers are the basics for any kind of communication, from a modern TV commercial like Dumb Ways to Die, to a fresh content daily campaign such as Oreo's 100th, to native advertising ideas that won't get lost in the sea of mediocre content.

So while this book doesn't really get into the most modern ideas or teams of processes that we see now from the most innovative agencies, it does a marvelous job of introducing the reader and students to the basics of strategy, consumer analysis, concepting, execution and writing. (The latter, sadly, is a dying craft despite the power of words to persuade and inspire.) It also serves as a reminder that creativity or execution for the sake of creativity or execution are as meaningless as a brilliant brief without a remarkable creative execution to bring it to life.

Perhaps most importantly, if you're looking for a book that you can actually use and learn something practical from, Advertising Concept and Copy doesn't simply tell you how things should work or give you examples that do, it strives to help you with solid tips, suggestions, how-to's, starting points, ways to look at problems, etc. As any creative person knows, you inevitably have to teach yourself and find what works best for you when it comes to idea generation, but for the beginner, there is much that's useful in these 256 pages.

I have few small complaints, such as the writer didn't know that Shackleton's recruitment ad is nothing more than urban legend. Or that some of the examples about changing behavior (re smoking and drinking) weren't actually very effective. And, as mentioned earlier, that most of the examples represent the past more than the future. But overall, this is among the better books available for any of the following.

Students who are studying advertising.
Students who aspire to a creative career and want to develop the basic skills and tools.
Teachers and professors who want a solid companion to augment their own approach to the topic.
Young professionals who want a bit more history and an improved frame of reference for the business.

I plan to use it in some of my own introductory classes.

The most practical book for ad copywriters.

I can easily say that, of the dozen copywriting/persuasion books I own, this book is one of the most practical.

It gets all the prerequisite stuff in there (target audience research, how to create a brief, choosing a strategy) and throws in topics people rarely cover, like how to write in a particular voice or writing non-hype headlines.

i recommend this book for newbies and pros alike. And I say that as a mid-level digital copywriter with 4+ years of professional experience.

Purchased this book for my Visual and Copywriting class. It has a great mix between pictures and text, and is very easy to read and follow. Would recommend this book for a communication class or just to brush up on advertising concepts.

Ellsberg's transformation from cold warrior and Defense Department analyst to impassioned antiwar crusader who released the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times in June 1971 makes a remarkable and riveting story that still shocks 30 years later. Avoiding, for the most part, self-justification and self-aggrandizement, he clearly relates the experiences that led him to reject as arrogant lies the premises six presidents presented to the public and Congress to secure support for the Vietnam War. He describes the disjunction between what he saw during visits to Vietnam in the early and mid-'60s, driving through dangerous Viet Cong-held territory, and what was told to the press and public. And he recalls his first reading of the classified documents later known as the Pentagon Papers, which exposed the motives, in his view unprincipled, behind American involvement in Vietnam. Ellsberg creates page-turning human drama and suspense in both his descriptions of his early experience accompanying U.S. combat missions in Vietnam and his days spent underground evading an FBI manhunt after the Times's publication of the Papers. Before leaking the Pentagon Papers, which documented U.S. foreign-policy failures and deceit in Vietnam from 1945 to 1968, Ellsberg was a gung-ho advisor to the State and Defense departments. One fascinating part of this story is his growing disenchantment with the war during these years. He came to believe that leaking the top-secret papers and other classified documents was a patriotic act that could help end the war. Other fascinating aspects of this account include Ellsberg's frustrated attempts to find a member of Congress who would accept and use the papers to build a case against the war as well as his growing role in the antiwar movement. President Nixon failed in his strong-arm tactics to discredit Ellsberg, and the case against him was dismissed because of the illegal break-in at the office of Dr Lewis Fielding, Ellsberg's psychiatrist. Interestingly, Ellsberg speculates that the break-in by Nixon's "Plumbers" was as much an attempt to blackmail Fielding as it was a gambit to stop Ellsberg. The book suffers somewhat from the overabundance of detail and repetition that also flawed Tom Wells's Wild Man: The Life and Times of Daniel Ellsberg. However, Ellsberg's autobiographical account provides insight into the disturbing abuses of presidential power that plagued the Vietnam/Watergate era. Recommended for public libraries.

Call it "the Gary Cooper factor": pop culture (and pop history) demands a certain modesty (like that of Cooper's "aw shucks" film characters) from American heroes. So Ellsberg hasn't fit comfortably into the American pantheon. His signal contribution also remains controversial: Ellsberg "leaked" the Pentagon Papers, but those voluminous documents were simply a history of the Vietnam War few Americans actually read. They offered few surprises but did confirm the antiwar movement's charge that the government had lied to its citizens. An unlikely whistleblower, Ellsberg was a Harvard economics Ph.D. who shifted between government appointments and the RAND Corporation and spent significant time in Vietnam--a quintessential "defense intellectual." Even after he decided the "top-secret" Pentagon Papers should be released, he spent nearly two years trying to convince various dovish politicians to take the lead. The Pentagon Papers went to the press--the New York Times and, later, the Washington Post and other outlets--only because no one else would reveal them. The Nixon administration's hysterical reaction "justified" a number of the Watergate crimes that brought down Nixon's presidency. In this memoir of his years working first for and then against the U.S. defense establishment, Ellsberg clearly regrets he took action so many years after he realized the Vietnam War could not be won. Rare History

Ellsberg is a driven man--driven toward solving puzzles and righting that which is wrong. The intensity of his intellect and the breadth of his insider experience would have made Daniel Ellsberg an amazing historian of the Vietnam War even if he hadn't become an anti-war activist. The fact that he had--in the end--studied both sides, and that eventually he had access not only to the Pentagon Papers but also the Nixon Whitehouse tapes allowed him to explain the war and its perpetrators with a rare combination of vividness and authority.

Judging from what is written in today's newspapers, the patterns Ellsberg describes in Secrets are repeating themselves in the Iraq War. _Secrets_ deserves to be widely read, as a lesson in courage, as history, and as a warning to those of us who might be tempted to sit back and trust unquestioningly those who would lead us into war then resist bringing us back out.

Spellbinding Recounting Of The Pentagon Papers Story!

After finding this book quite by accident while browsing through the wonderful Concord bookstore the other day, I was astounded to find how relevant and interesting a story author Daniel Ellsberg manages to conjure up after all this time regarding his legendary experience leading up to and including the leaking, release and publication of the infamous "Pentagon Papers' by the New York Times. As he explains early in the long yet fascinating monologue, he fully expected to be sentenced to a long prison sentence for having secreted a copy of the highly classified Department of Defense's official history of the American Government's policy and involvement in Vietnam. The report was a damning confirmation of the worst fears of the anti-war movement, and provided overwhelming evidence of the cynical, manipulative, and deceitful character of our government and its deceit to its own people regarding its involvement.

What surprised Ellsberg most in all of this swirling excitement and activity was his own growing celebrity, and while he spent years fearing the worst for his own admitted culpability in defying criminal statues by stealing and leaking official government secrets, eventually the charges against him were dropped based, among other things, on the revelations of the Nixon's plumber's unit's illegal break-in at Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office. Ellsberg was an unlikely hero, a graduate of the Harvard University economics doctoral program, a former marine officer turned defense issue intellectual, a frequent visitor to Vietnam who was rankled by the distinct difference between what he was seeing and experiencing during his visits, on the one hand, and what the official American government position regarding what the situation was on the ground on the other.

Based on this growing dissatisfaction and the discovery of the so-called Pentagon papers, a treasure trove of more than 7,000 pages of carefully documented details about the U.S. Government's involvement in Vietnam and its motives, considerations, and actions, Ellsberg tried to enlist the support of a number of Senators and Congressmen in an effort to use the evidence in the Pentagon Papers to undercut the Government's position and thereby end the war itself. Failing to do so, he finally surrendered the documents to the New York Times, which agreed to publish them through a series of daily excerpts (and also later in an abridged best-selling paperback version). The Government tried to stop publication, but was denied the right to do so by the Supreme Court. Of course, with the publication came an increase in public opposition to the war and a recognition of the degree to which the Executive branch and the military had intentionally misled the public regarding the conduct of the war and the situation on the ground for the moir� than 500,000 troops then stationed in-country. Still, it took more than five more years before the American involvement in Vietnam ended.

This is a wonderful book to experience, and in reading it one comes to recognize the formidable skills Ellsberg brings to bear in terms of his amazing recall, eye for details, and ability to successfully juggle a variety of interacting considerations at the same time. This guy is smarter than the average teddy bear, and it is easy to see how difficult a task it would have been for the Department of Defense and the nitwits over in the White House to try to outmaneuver him. I was a bit surprised at some of the personal revelations in the book, and while it is obvious that Mr. Ellsberg has a healthy ego, he manages for the most part to keep it at bay in retelling a story that could have easily have devolved in a retelling of the David against Goliath epic, but which he keeps objective and factual enough to keep the story rolling along as a recounting of the gripping events that transpired more than thirty years ago and helped to turn the tide of public opinion toward the war in Vietnam. I heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in 20th century American history. Enjoy!

Recipies that work - everytime

Being an amateur cook is not always easy. But this book starts out setting the stage with cookware etc. It then explains in an effortless way how to cook some of the best dishes I have ever prepared. The stuff works every time and it always looks good. Currently this is my one stop book for all my dinner parties, and I have a large collection of cookbooks! Well worth the money and a beautiful book to read as well.

Get to know it and benefit.

I found my copy of this book used at a library book sale a couple years ago. So, why write a review of it on Amazon, especially now? I just moved abroad and my copy of this book is among those that didn't find their way into my suitcase. I miss it already.

I must admit that the first time I looked through it, I found it pretentious and unrealistic. The recipes, the recommendations, etc. All of it seemed a bit contrived.

However, I got to know it. I misinterpreted it at first. What I though was pretentious or whatever was more along the lines of an exploration of food in line with a particular philosophy. It's a balance of food, philosophy, and solid ideas that I haven't managed to find anywhere else. Once I sat down and understood it for the statement that it is, it became incredibly valuable to me.

I started cooking as a line cook at a big chain seafood restaurant. Not inspiring, but it got me comfortable with cooking, with working with a variety of ingredients in a way I was unable to before. After I left, I started cooking for myself, and eventually this book was one of the things that really helped me find joy and ultimately a very enriching experience in cooking. It was a great presence for me.

This is the sort of book that won't be to the taste of a lot of potential buyers. It has an agenda and makes no apologies. However, if you can see the beauty in the philosophy that underlies the book as a whole and explore it for yourself, it's wonderful. Not for everyone, but all the same I recommend it.

My Favourite Cookery Book

I've got hundreds of cookery books. This is my favourite cookery book for several reasons. The recipes are fail-proof and the results are restaurant quality every time. The recipes appeal to me and make me want to try them (there are only a handful of things remaining that I've not tried to make yet). The book is as much about lifestyle and style as much as cookery - its refreshing to look at and inspiring to read. My favourite recipes from the book are often the most simple and frequently cook them - midnight spaghetti, vichyssoise & salmon, venetian peas & rice, tomato & basil lasagne, the best shepherds pie you could ever make and a nifty way to cook perfect, tender steaks.

Even though the hoary legend that depicts Marco Polo bringing the noodle back from China to Italy has been long debunked, the noodle’s origins remain shrouded in the mists of prehistory. Lin-Liu, an American and director of a cooking school in Beijing, sets off on a trek to follow the Silk Road west across China through Central Asia and Turkey to Italy to discover how disparate times and peoples have given the noodle new shapes and textures. Touring initially with a couple of fellow chefs, she notes that, even within their own nation, the Chinese can be very wary of other provinces’ cooking. One Food Journalist's Journey to the West on the Silk Road

This is a heroine's journey to the west---among other things, a riff on the Chinese classic about a trickster monkey who ventures far into the west of China and encounters all sorts of fabulous situations. Lin-Liu is a gifted journalist, food critic and most of all MEMOIRIST. She makes it very clear that she is exploring her own identity as she reverses Marco Polo's path along the Silk Road. One identity, that of Chinese-American is questioned by many of the Chinese she encounters. Another, that of a married woman, is questioned by Lin-Liu herself, as well as by those she meets.
I was particularly interested in her exploration of cooking as women's work or man's work in various settings, as this is a big part of the debate about domestic and professional roles for women everywhere.
In fact, at its most active, hardly anyone travelled the whole length of the silk road. Merchants exchanged goods and the goods travelled on. Ideas, like Buddhism, did travel the distance, from India to Japan. As Lin-Liu discovered, ideas about food also moved along the road.
Her style is devastatingly honest, and I look forward to reading about the rest of her life and cooking adventures!

On the Noodle Road: From Beijing to Rome, with Love and Pasta

Jen Lin-Liu sets out to travel the ancient Silk Road from East to West to discover the provenance of noodles. She asks the question in the beginning, and finds more than that question to answer. The story involves politics, history, the roles of women, recipes, adventures and a look at herself and her marriage. Each stopping place has something to offer, and she holds the reader's attention. Her network of friends and colleagues is wide-ranging and full of surprises.

This author's unquenchable curiosity leads her to cooking lessons, side trips (who else makes a pilgrimage to a town whose fame is in its breakfasts?) weddings and - of course - noodle making. I have certainly enjoyed reading the book.
