Dr. Sakai was Chief Clinical Therapist at Kaiser Behavioral Health Services, and retired after 31 years. She is also an EMDR facilitator and is now in full-time private practice.

This book is excellent for lay people and professionals in alleviating emotional symptoms to everyday issues. Energy Psychology is the new psychology today! It works and all those in the field of healing should learn it. This is a must have book! Although there are official trainers for thought field therapy (TFT), ACEP has a program for EFT individuals to be certified clinically. There's a diagnostic part of TFT that has been incorporated into the EFT curriculum. This is the main ingredient to customize individual's treatments, not everyone is the same. Awesome job Dr. Caroline Sakai !!! I so love this book....

Life Changing Reading

This remarkable book is about energy psychology for professionals and lay persons alike. It describes what energy psychology is and how to use it. There are fascinating accounts of real life problems we can all relate to with step by step application of this marvelous tapping technique called TFT(Thought Field Therapy) leading to profound healing from problems ranging from phobias , depression and anxiety to some of life's worse traumas. Dr. Sakai's writing is clear and accessible to anyone wanting to learn this technique to feel better and be healthier, and help others do the same. Her examples of those she has treated are very inspiring and encouraging as they demonstrate how healing truly is attainable. One of the great benefits of TFT is that it is self- administered and portable, and can also be used to benefit babies, animals and the impaired elderly. This is a compelling, life changing book about overcoming adversity and I'm eager to read it again!

A practical grammar resource for new and seasoned teachers.

Secrets of Teaching ESL Grammar is a great book for new teachers, CELTA candidates or for those involved in teacher training. It's by the same author who wrote the Ultimate Phrasal Verb Book, which I also recommend.

There's a lot here- it's a dense 300 pages covering assumed knowledge (what knowledge learners should already have before teaching them a particular grammar point), anticipated problems (excellent!) and most importantly, clear instructions and practical ideas on exactly how to teach each grammar point, which is what most new teachers are looking for to pass their certificate course or to survive their first years of teaching. It's good for on-the-fly teaching situations and in preparation for observed lessons.

It goes far beyond the basics and is also useful for seasoned teachers who just need to refresh their memories once in a while.

I like how it gives explanations of relevant jargon while keeping the style of writing informal. The book is really hands-on and probably the closest example of what teaching grammar to ESL students is really all about. I wish there were more concept checking questions to ask students to check for understanding, but this is my only gripe!

I own many of Carl Hart’s ESL books and over the years, they have all become part of my “most frequently used” resources regardless of the university or organization where I taught. After reviewing his latest work, “Secrets of Teaching ESL Grammar”, I can see this too will become not only one of my own “go to” resources, but also one that I can easily recommend to other new ESL professionals who are looking for student-oriented explanations of the most important beginner-through-advanced grammar points that their students need to know. The range of grammar topics covered is extremely comprehensive and I can easily see the book’s value for all teachers whether they are
instructing a particular, focused grammar course or are preparing students to take a comprehensive exam such as the TOEFL or IELTS. In short, it's a must read for teachers just starting out in the ESL field, or for those already working in it who feel their grammar knowledge needs to be sharpened.

Fabulous

ESL is serious business, but teaching and learning it need not be. I love this book - it is concise, easy to follow, offers some great advice, and all the while it's humorous and engaging. I found myself giggling quite a bit reading through it - and recognized colleagues (even myself) on occasion in the mention of certain common behaviors/beliefs of ESL teachers.
I have learned, and continue to learn, great tips from it; not only in grammar, but in how to teach it and how to respond to students' questions. In addition, I am learning how not to take myself so seriously - which I find is making me more comfortable and confident in class. I only wish I had discovered this book a couple of years ago when I first started teaching.

Best reference for mgmt system implementation I've found

I have used this book as support for implementing management systems in several plants in a global company as well as at the business enterprise (multiple plants plus leadership and supporting processes) level. The concepts and diagrams are presented in a simple, effective manner, particularly discussion of the Process Approach, Alignment Methodology, and tools such as the Process List, BMS Control Plan, etc. I've purchased multiple copies and handed out to local management system implementers as reference. Tremendously useful. Have also used Chad's company several times for consulting and training. Chad throroughly knows what he's talking about and makes it understandable and practical, and all about making business sense.

Superficial : save your money

I was expecting a book that gave more information about the origin of idiomatic phrases. This book was superficial and did not give significan information about any of the idioms/phrases. I am still looking for a book that is worth the money I pay. I would like a book that discusses the origin of idioms: an **annotated** book of idiomatic phrases. When I did an Amazon search for such, this book is one that came up. Sadly, not at all true. If you know of a good book, please write a note/addendum to this review. Thank you!

I've listed a few examples of hypothetical shocking statements that might be made by partisans of some selected issues:

An Environmentalist: "The human race might not see the turn of the next century."

An Educational Reformer: "America's public schools are pretty good - for a third world nation!"

A Dietitian: "You may be killing your children."

An Opponent of Anti-ballistic missile systems: We're more likely to die from a terrorist bombing than from a missile launched from a rogue nation."

A Sociologist with a Bias Against Extreme Social Stratification:

"Karl Marx might have been right. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer."

A Scientist Concerned About Global Warming: "Pretty soon we'll have to visit our coastal cities from a sight seeing submarine."

An Ultra-feminist: "Who are the most dangerous people in the world? They're fairly easy to spot for they usually wear pants!"

A Doctor Pitted against Health Insurance Companies: "Could we win a war if our generals had to get permission to go ahead with each planned battlefield maneuver? Well doctors are facing similar circumstances today!"

One outstanding example of the shock 'em technique was provided by the antics of the evangelist Aimee Semple Mc Pherson. In the late 1920s, her illustrated sermons became famous. After receiving a traffic ticket for speeding she had an idea for a sermon. One day she called out to her congregation, "Stop! You're under arrest!" Sister Aimee, as she was called, appeared on her temple platform in a police uniform standing by a motorcycle with the sound of police siren's echoing throughout the Temple. She challenged her people to stop before they sped into hell. *

THE SHOTGUN APPROACH

With this technique the propagandist throws at the audience every supporting idea for his or her cause that can be thought up. The hope is that at least some of the ideas will be accepted. The more varied and heterogeneous the audience is, the better the chances to get ideas across. If the propagandist is scared to base his or her case on just one main point, this approach is a wise one.

EMPHASIZE ONE POINT

With this technique the propagandist selects what he or she feels is the strongest argument supporting the position being taken on a subject. All other supporting arguments are excluded. It can be risky because if the opponent shoots down the propagandist's main idea the contest is over.

Abraham Lincoln debated using this approach. He was seriously opposed to slavery and in his speeches he hammered away at the problem relentlessly. The slave holding states didn't like him one bit but the free states certainly did and elected him to the presidency.

About the Author
Henry T. Conserva has taught in public secondary schools in the San Francisco Bay Area of California for over fifty years. In his position as a debating coach, he was involved in developing critical thinking skills among his students. He thought knowledge of propaganda techniques was essential in arming his students against the many questionable arguments they often faced in their debates. He noted that many of the students became skeptical consumers as they saw through many of the advertising appeals that were aimed at them on a daily basis. His hope has always been that all students would benefit from knowing at least some of the ways used by those who wish to brainwash them.

there are better books on the subject

This is very basic and simplistic text. It could be useful, but there are much better books on the subject. This one seems rather disorganized and poorly explained. I would agree with one reviewer that this looks like a Word document turned into a book. I would add that the whole project looks like a rush job without much planning and thought. As the other reviewer I would also recommend an excellent book by Pratkanis and Aronson The Age of Propaganda. Similar price, but much better and much more sophisticated. Further, if one is interested in logical fallacies, there is this old classic by Nicholas Capaldi The Art of Deception. Finally, you could consider "Politics and Propaganda: Weapons of Mass Seduction" (this one is a bit more difficult).

Informative, but designed for high school

I have been interested in propaganda and persuasion for some time now, so when I learned about this book I was very excited. The text itself is a brief overview of 88 or so propaganda techniques. Each is described in about 3 lines, and include an example. The explanations are clear, but not in depth. The work is suitable for someone seeking an encyclopedia-style knowledge.

The formatting appears to be a Word Document that has been put straight to press, untouched.

All in all, if you're looking for a succinct crash course, this may work. If you're truly looking for information, look to Age of Propaganda.
