About the Author
Anthony Molland, MSc, PhD, CEng, FRINA is Emeritus Professor of Ship Design at the University of Southampton. He has carried out extensive experimental research and published widely on ship design and ship hydrodynamics including ship rudders and control surfaces, propellers and ship resistance components.

Stephen Turnock, MA, SM, PhD, CEng, MIMechE is Senior Lecturer in Ship Science at the University of Southampton. His research encompasses both experimental and theoretical work on ships, yachts, underwater vehicles and renewable energy devices and the application of CFD for the design of control surfaces and propulsion systems.

Part 1 of a three part novel

The publication history on this one is a little confusing. I read it as part of a trilogy called The Brave Free Men, but I can see that it has been renamed (probably at Vance's request) Durdane. I see that other people have read it as The Faceless Man, but my copy is called The Anome.

The three books in this "trilogy" are clearly one novel. In today's world, it would be published as one largish 700 to 800 page novel. I don't know if hacking it into three volumes was Vance's idea or the publisher's idea, but either way, it's really one novel.

The book itself:
The Brave Free Men aka Durdane is one of Vance's finest works. The sense of danger and suspense throughout the book is finely tuned. The main character has one of the best arcs in Vance's canon. Vance's fans are accustomed to overlooking shaggy pacing and casual plotting in order to enjoy his mind-blowing world building and creativity, but they will not have to do so here. This is one of the times that Vance's strengths came together perfectly.

Vance at his best

Vance knew how to do what most of today's SF writers have forgotten: how to make you care about a character. I was drawn in and held by this world and this character. Vance's worlds are above all, real worlds, every bit as corrupt, evil and cruel as this one, and that's what makes his stories so believable and involving. And the system of balloons are fun, too.

While not generally considered Vance's tippy top drawer, the Durdane books (The Anome, The Brave Free Men, and The Asutra) are more than readable. Vance fans must not miss these. They take place in the same time frame as Emphyrio (1969), which is one of Vance's very best books. The planet Durdane is a world beyond the perimeter of human civilization (originally far beyond, but at the time of the story only just beyond). Vance mentions several times a large 20,000-star cluster called the Schiafarella that dominates Durdane's summer night sky; Earth is thought to be in that general direction, "beyond" the cluster. The planet has three red/orange dwarf suns, which are apparently in tight orbit, so the planet orbits the trio, which are constantly eclipsing one another and creating strange light effects; this give rise to an obsession in Durdanian culture with color and color symbology; all of this is described but not explicated.

The original inhabitants undertook a long, long migration in the general direction of Galactic inward. They sought to isolate themselves from humanity and dwell on a virgin world in peace, so they scuttled their starships. Flash forward 9000 years. Usual Vance quirkiness and strange societies, including widespread reversion to tribalism.

But the story line is one of the few times Vance treats the implications of an alien civilization whose own perimeter is about to collide with humanity's. He doesn't deal with it head on, but even in the context of his rather baroque and sideways story telling, it's quite intriguing.

Nice, but no need to buy.

Firstly, I love minimalism. The two quotes at the beginning of this book sum up what is wonderful about minimalism rather nicely, and I encourage you to read them (at the book store). Secondly, some of the exibits in this book are really fantastic, especially the Japanese projects. I found a lot of inspiration looking at these designs, and the photography is mostly great.
BUT, you really don't need to buy this particular book. I suggest Minimalist Houses over this particular collection because it has a lot more variety, and greater international representation (eg. you'll see more from Germany, Sweedan, the U.S. and Japan) for about the same price. Minimalist Spaces is a nice book, but read it the store as an appetizer for Minimalist Houses, if minimalism appeals to you. Some people are uncomfortable with minimalism, and there are plenty of books and designs for you too :).

The materials in Minimalist Spaces are thoughtfully selected from broad range around the world. With its good quality graphics, it's a book worthy to read. If more specific details and graphic illustrations could be included, it would be much more helpful. Anyway, this is a good book of its kind.

High interest book for ESL

Can You Believe It 2, one of a three-part series, is a high-interest book based on true stories that are summarized using a number of idioms per chapter. The chapters are very short, beginning with a paragraph-length reading, a chart defining the idioms used,picture cues to help the student retell the story in his/her own words. questions about the story, personal questions cued with the idioms, a dictation section, and a summary exercise that requires students to put some of the idioms in context in the blanks. It also has some very helpful appendices and an alphabetical list of the book's idioms at the end of the book. (No answer key)

I like the book because it is high-interest and teaches idioms in an effective way. The review units are a great way of recycling material and give students more exposure. I have been using this book for over ten years.

That being said, the series needs an update, which is why I didn't give it five stars. More exercises could be added to the chapters to give them a little more substance, and some of the idioms are out of common use ("fit as a fiddle," "dead as a door nail," ) Since the chapters are quite brief, I usually expand on the questions or use the lessons as part of a longer lesson.

The book also offers cassettes, but teachers can use this book without those dinosaurs.....

Excellent, Interesting ESL Resource

In tutoring middle- and high-school students from Korea, this workbook is the best I've found for studying English idioms and expressions. Each lesson's true, amazing short story presents new idioms in context, then an eight-panel comic strip illustrates the story. Discussion questions about the story, a summary dictation, and review exercises work together to guarantee that each idiom is read, heard, written, and spoken by my students.

I only wish I could find Book 1, because books 2 and 3 are so good!
