Provides the next step of wine appreciation in clear terms

This book does a terrific job of simplifying the complex science that goes into winemaking. Ever wonder what some of the terms mean on the back of a wine bottle? This book is a quick read that provides consise and relatable explanations. It is not a book on how to make wine. It is not a book for scientists. It is a non-technical book for anyone that wants to learn more about the process and options from the dirt to the glass.

well written but not quite comprehensive
By intractable
Clearly written and a quick read, but don't be fooled: there is a lot of solid technical information here, including one of the best published reviews of filtration, and an excellent overview of additives. Clarity here is due to good writing and careful exposition, not by dumbing down the topic. The book was written for classroom use, for instance by students preparing for the WSET Diploma Examination, and also succeeds as a text for someone who understands the basics of winemaking but wants to know the why as well as the what.

However, the chapter on fermentation is a bit brief for its intended role as a textbook, and faults merit only a few pages. A lack of a bibliography (other than a few scattered references to journal articles) also counts against it. I recommend supplementing with another text such as Rankine's "Making Good Wine" (ISBN 140503601X) or a reference work such as Jackson's "Wine Science".

(Note: A newer edition is now available, it might address some of the above criticisms.)

This is a book worth owning and reading, but it will not provide all the answers.

Wonderfully informative and well-written

As a woodworker who is increasingly getting away from power tools and back to hand work, reading about how Japanese woodworkers do it was fascinating. I have only one Japanese tool sofar, a small dozuki saw, but it's cut is so fine and so easy to control that I intend to aquire more Japanese tools. This book has inspired me; equally importantly, it shows the way to their use, and in some cases, how to make your own. I heartily recommend this fine book to anyone interested in learning more about Japanese woodworking, or in becoming a better woodworker with hand tools in general. In addition to being well written, Toshio Odate gives a fascinating account of his apprenticship to his stepfather within its cultural context.

excellent instructions

Purchased this for my son to use with my tools. The book has clear detailed instructions and helpful photos to assist with suggested projects. It is well written with easy explanations to assist the novice wood wooker. You will need special tools for the work so look into what you need as so you are not disappointed that you can not start with a project.

While I will not be as brutal as many of the reviewers here I, too, was disappointed with this book. All three stories lacked the charismatic heroes of her best works, and the heroines lacked spirit as well. They all fell in love in a matter of days, there was no emotional conflict as has been Palmer's hallmark and none of the steamy dialogue and sexual tension that has made me such a fan of many of her past works. I never thought I would have to force myself through a Diana Palmer book, but I did with this one. The best thing about this collection is that at least the heroes don't smoke like chimneys. It probably deserves fewer stars than I am giving, but as I devoted fan I cannot bring myself to do it. Suffice it to say, this one is going to the used bookstore, pronto.

It was very, very disappointing.

Over the years I have read all of Ms. Palmer's books. I am generally very pleased with her work and consider her to be a very entertaining author in the romance genre. But I must say that these three stories were bad. There was no develpment of either the main characters or their romances. It was like reading a non-romance book which lacked an intresting plot. The main characters were presented and without any tension or romance, the men decided that they were getting old or weary of life and that they should marry the heroine because after all she'll do. The only character who was vaguely intresting was Cy, a peripheral character that turned up in the first two stories (Guy and Luke). The third story, Christopher was the worset. I love stories about the Deverell's and the Lassiter detective agency, so a story about Tansy's youngest son sounded exciting. But I was soon disappointed. The story was poorly written and not well thought out. There are inconsistencies in family relationship and ages. Example, Tansy is in her early seventies, her son Chris is 33 years old and she had him at "about 40" years of age. Say she was 38 which would make her 71 at present. Near the end of the story Tansy says she meet Della's grandfather shortly after her first husband death (Chris's father) "about 40" years ago. If he died "about" forty years ago, Chris has to be at least "about forty" years old, not 33, not to mention she would be about 80, not in her early seventies. I know this is being a stickler and petty but that's my point, the story was so uninteresting that the age thing ended up being the only of interest. Concise and practical

What really captivated me about this book is the simple explanations of some of the nuances of the Chinese language such as yao...le or kuai...le (about to...). Very important too are the examples on the various uses of 'le'. This is by no means exhaustive, but done in a non-complicated manner and besides, any help on the usage of 'le' is helpful as this is quite a hard concept to master in Chinese.
Each chapter starts off with some dialog (Chinese characters, pinyin, no English translations) and then a reading passage. Afterwards, new words and concepts are explained, where the finer points of the language are explained. Although there are no English translations alongside the initial text in the dialogs, I think this format is ok for an intermediate text as it gives the reader an opportunity to do some self evaluation. The translations are at the end of each chapter.
Here's another example of clarifying grammatical concepts. When I previously leared "ni putonghua shuo de hen hao (your Chinese is very good)" I never understood the grammatical construct of it. The author explains that it is a shortened form of "ni shuo putonghua shuode hen hao," explains the construct and explains why and how it is shortened. He cleared up in 5 minutes what I was confused about for months.
Alas, I have only read Chapter 1 and am now reading Chapter 2. I think I will enjoy this text and will also buy his "Beginner's Chinese" which is the prequel to this book.

Fantastic Reader

I started out studying Chinese using "Practical Chinese Reader I(Beijing Press)" and have even continued using the following book in the same series only to find that it is littered with either superfluous information about tea sets or buying a traditional "Mao" suit(as it is erroneously refered to by many outside China)or full of propoganda like the four great modernizations and how everything has been better since liberation. Some of the vocabulary is out of date, the grammer is written using a dictionary of the most obscure words that only a true linguist could understand, and the lessons are extremely boring or irrevlevent to modern life.

Intermediate Chinese, however, has been one of the most helpful books I have ever used, especailly with the above for mentioned series in comparisson. The grammer is well explained with numerous examples and excercises, and the vocabulary is much more up to date. But the most important aspect has to be the ease at which he uses vocabualry. The sentances in Unit 1 are fairly easy with basic structure in tact and progresses ever more towards the latter chapters. I have just finished the book and have begun to review all the chapters only to find how simple they are now that I have completed the book.The english translations of the texts have to be the most distinguishable feature of this book as it allows you to translate back to chinese and monitor your progress. This truly is a self study book, however it does require that you be familar with stroke order and pronunciation as it lacks both. (The Practical Chinese Reader Series however covers the stroke order, and the audio can be found with a simple google search.)

I would also recommend that you go to your local library and check out the Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese CD's to improve your listening and grammer. I am almost finished with the third set and have found that it has been a great asset to my learning. This language may seem hard at first but after a few months of constant study you will begin to see how easy it really can be- its just those tricky characters that make it so difficult.But even Chinese people have a hard time with them.

I own a bunch of Chinese learning books and this is my favorite. Whenever I feel rusty and want to brush up I pull this out, read the conversations, and do some of the exercises. Working through this book substantially improved my Chinese.

They spent most of their service lives as a “fleet in being” anchored in a well-protected port of Pola with only occasional trips to the Fažana Channel (well-screened by Brijuni Islands) for gunnery practice. During the war the ships were manned mainly by reservists, while the most promising and experienced members of their crews were detached to serve onboard submarines or torpedo boats, or assigned to land-based units. The second ship of the class ended her career in rather dramatic circumstances, which is why she perhaps deserves a more detailed treatment.

The Battleship IV was laid down at San Marco on July 23, 1910 and launched on June 24, 1911. The Emperor’s court used the occasion to organize a lavish celebration designed to carry a strong political message. The Emperor insisted that the battleship be given a rather unusual, Latin name Viribus Unitis (Strength in Unity – Emperor’s personal motto).

But therein lies the most exasperating aspect of Kagero’s stunning study: no one offers an injection-molded model of this beautiful battleship! Sure, a couple 1:700-scale resin Viribus Unitis kits have appeared. But they’re hard-to-find – and expensive. Maybe Kagero’s ripping reference will change all that. And we’ll soon add plastic Tegetthoff Class Dreadnoughts to our display cases! Rabidly recommended!

Wonderful drawings but less value than other volumes in this series

This is the 35th (No. 16035) book in Kagero's Super Drawings in 3D series. It is published in the familiar format of an 8-1/4" x 11-3/4", stapled card cover with 68 interior pages although the page numbering includes the card covers which is standard for this series.

The subject is a welcome one, a dreadnought type battleship built in a nation which would shortly no longer exist, Austria-Hungary. The computer graphics, as always, are superbly done and give the reader an excellent impression of the exterior of the ship. There are a few features present which I have not seen on the ships in other volumes in this series. The openings where the main armament emerges from the turrets are closed off by metal panels which have to be opened for the guns to elevate. These are unfortunately always shown opened. There are also vent doors in the interiors of the funnels. I would have liked more detail here as well. There are also extensive views of the ship with the torpedo nets deployed.

But this book has more than a few weaknesses as well. The text has never been a great selling point of these books but this book was especially lacking in this area. There was no discussion at all of the design or technical details of the ship. There is a service history of sorts but it is padded out with exposition about the political problems of the country which ultimately led to its partition. The translation is more than a little dodgy as well. There is the sentence "The Szent Istvan survived almost unscathed" followed by an account of her sinking! I think the authors were going for "The Szent Istvan almost survived unscathed". The captions are generally informative but rather brief. The constant use of "headlights" when "searchlights" was meant was annoying. The torpedo battery also gets short shrift, being below the waterline. Only the stern tube is mentioned in the captions. The covers for the side tubes are visible but not mentioned; I couldn't make out the bow tube at all.

The worst failing was the lack of the usual unbound foldout with conventional line drawings. All the reader gets is a full page advertisement for the volume in Kagero's Top Drawings series for this ship. I hope that this does not become the norm for this series.

In conclusion, the book can be highly recommended on the computer graphics alone but if the conventional line drawings are important to you you may have to buy another book.

A little know history of a exquisite ship

Excellent books with short histories and superb artwork of the subject ship. Individual books have additional material such as scale drawings and some have 3D content complete with glasses for viewing them. Superb for both content artwork and general appearance, these books bring the subject vehicle back to life in all their magnificent detail. Great for modeling, general information or simple viewing. Very pleased with the product and content.

Fantastic coverage of one of the world's lesser known dreadnoughts. The centerfold computer generated portrait of the ship at anchor is awesome.
