About the Author
Bernard Liengme attended Imperial College in London and received a BSc & PhD in Chemistry. He also received post-docs at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburg and the University of British Columbia. He has conducted extensive reseach in surface chemistry and Mossbauer Effect. He has been at St Francis Xavier University in Canada since 1968 as professor, Associate Dean and Registrar as well as teaching chemistry and computer science.

Basic book, easy understanding

The book is very good for engineers.
Knowing better EXCEL can facilitate a lot the daily tasks we have to do.

The book is very easy to understand, with many examples that can be followed in a computer without problems.

I was very interested in the Visual Basic section, which is a little poor in my opinion.
But it gives the basics and can be useful for someone that wants to begin coding in VBA.
For people that already know a little and want to improve in VBA, it is not a good option.

error chapter 15

Looking for a textbook to help my engineering students learn useful excel tools, I paid special attention to Chapter 15, which starts with a linkage example.

The so-called Freudenstein equation is given wrongly there, missing one of the cosine dependencies that make the linkage loop equation a little messy. Such an error really dashes the credibility of the entire book, although I suppose the author probably gets the Excel commands all right.

It makes me think ...... a lot

Schweller appears to have written some early thoughts on this topic around 2010. One article caught the attention of the presenters of an ABC [Australian] program and resulted in him giving an interview. For anybody contemplating buying this book, I recommend visiting the page where it is discussed. You'll have to google the words 'counterpoint' and 'schweller' to obtain the link as it isn't accepted.

I am not into politics much at all, but am strongly interested in the idea of entropy or information theory in relation to life. Charles Seife's 'Decoding the Universe' nicely puts this into perspective. This book is a long-waited, for me at least, addition to Schweller's thoughts on the applicability of this concept in relation to society as a whole. And for that he does a brilliant job. For any thinking person, in and outside of the political focus of life, this is an important read. Whilst I cannot discuss/debate the depth of his arguments in relation to the nitty-gritty of the political happenings of the world, a lot of it seems quite plausible. The power of the book to me was the fact that Schweller's insight into connecting a fundamental physical law into the social sciences opens up an enormous opportunity for anybody who wishes to 'think outside the square'.

These books [this + Seife's] collectively offer an intuitive and powerful re-orientation of the way I think about things. Given that life is indeed floundering in a manner that Schweller rather accurately portrays, those who wish to become better prepared for the increasingly conflicting life of the 21st century would find this an invaluable guide. I have bought a lot of books in recent years to try and grasp various aspects of life and Seife puts a largely physical spin on things and Schweller brings it into the social world. This is the first book I have been compelled to write some thoughts on, such is the power of his insight and argument. It was a privilege to do so, as it is an idea that has enormous merit and Schweller has started the ball rolling.

I generally loathe to give any ratings to either extreme but had to go with 5 stars because I couldn't go higher. This book makes me think a lot, precisely why I bought it.

Must read for students and citizens alike

This book is a must read for anyone interested in international affairs ( and even those who are not). His views of international relations are innovate and deviate from many other traditional scholars like Waltz or Mearsheimer.

He writes about the diffusion of international actors being unlike any previous international order. He also places more emphasis on the development of technology and the fast rate of globalization than many other scholars. He problematizes the classical realism by arguing that while theories of the sort might have held true in the 1800's it would be ill-advised to apply the same logic to the current makeup of the international system. This being said, he does not completely abandon realism ( this is consistent with much of his earlier work where he characterizes himself as a neoclassical realist). His writing originates from the foundations of realism meaning that he believes the there is no global policeman in the international order and because of that states act out of their own self interest. However, he says that the power struggles that come out of this will not take the form of war and conflict because of how the world has developed.

He draws on the laws of thermodynamics to explain international relations, something that I had never seen before. He does so by defining and explaining the concept of entropy and then applying it to international politics. While there are parts of his explanations of thermodynamics that get dense, he does a good job keeping the pace of the book moving and never gets to scientific.

This book explains complex concepts in a way that anyone can understand. Overall, it was a great book that gave me a new perspective on international politics.

A compelling read for Realists and non-Realists Alike

A definite good read for any IR student or practioners. I liken it to the realist version of The Post American World by Zakaria. Schweller departs from the typical realist analysis of the world as a cyclical conflict prone process and focuses on what is unique about the 21st century. He conceded Great Power war and traditional balance of power is not likely in the years to come. Like most realist analyses, All is not rosy in the world though, and he makes a fairly compelling argument for a structural and informational entropy seeping into world politics. This entropy means diminishing potential for international institutions to solve current governance problems, the inward focus of Great Powers (at the expense of system order) even in an era of relative security, as well as insightful analysis of how non-powerful substate actors nevertheless have sufficient power/capacity to "veto" cooperation or create disorder from the sub state to the supra-state level. IR students and scholars will find things they both love and hate about his analysis. In either case it makes for a great debate/conversation.

Important information that every women needs to know...

Ms. Bonnie Kaye's Man Readers is a book that every woman in the world needs to read whether you are single, dating, or married to a man. Ms. Kaye addresses the need for women to nurture their own self-esteem and sexual esteem. She explains why a woman's need for sexual fulfillment is a vital and necessary part of a woman's emotional and spiritual health. Women are so good at sacrificing their own sexual satisfaction in order to maintain a relationship with a sexually or emotionally dysfunctional man.

The growing number of married/attached men that are posting in online chat rooms and forums that are openly seeking sexual relationships with women and/or men has been disturbing and disheartening to me as a woman. How does a woman protect herself when the man in her life has a secret life? I really feel for the wives of these men, and I began to wonder if they are as unknowing as their husbands' claim they are. Right now on several forums are threads posted by men entitled: "Happily married but bi-curious" or "married man seeking another married man for sexual fun...." These men discuss how much it "sucks to have to hide their desires from their wives" or "if my wife knew I was posting here she would kill me...." I worry about the happiness and sexual well-being of these women trapped in lives with men who are obsessed with hooking up with other men. How do women--single and married--protect themselves from these dishonest men?

I want to assert that I do not have any problems with gays and lesbians. I admire their courage to live openly in a society that can and does penalize them for being honest enough to be exactly whoever they are. What I do have a problem with are men that cheat--whether it is with men or women.

Ms. Kaye profiles not only gay/bisexual men that are married, but other types of dysfunctional men that prey upon women with low self-esteem. Also, she outlines how to spot if your man is cheating and ways to track his cyber life. Through 30 plus years of experience counseling women in toxic relationships, she has learned what works in terms of therapy, and how a woman can free herself from a dysfunctional marriage. This is not a book that bashes men. It acknowledges that there are many wonderfully, emotionally and sexually healthy men out in the world that are waiting to meet you--the woman you were always meant to be. However it won't happen as long as you are trapped in a living a lie. If you suspect your man is cheating, read this book, arm yourself with the knowledge to protect yourself, and find the courage to step out in the world. I believe in the courage and resiliency of my fellow womankind. Take care of yourself and remember that you are not alone.

I love this book. Bonnie has a kind and loving heart for women like me who were faced with the unexpected turn of events of finding out their husband was secretly leading life as a gay man while living a lie as a heterosexual husband. Bonnie does not bash men, or anyone for that matter. She provides strength, insight, love and support to so many women at a difficult time and gives them courage to be strong as they rebuild their lives. I am a strong again because of Bonnie and I am a better mother and emotionally healthy after my divorce. Thanks for having the courage to write this book and for the time you dedicate for helping thousands of women nationally.

Kids love 'em

Kids of all ages love these stories. I am a math enrichment teacher and we use these stories to "warm up our brains." They are also a great time filler for classroom teachers when waiting in line, waiting for a bell, etc. My own kids ask for these stories on car trips. I highly recommend all of Nathan Levy's books!

Lots of fun

Great book. I had teachers in school that liked to read us puzzles from these books, and it really taught me to analyze problems (a very helpful skill for someone who went on to engineering school). Great for in the classroom or for party games. My wife and I have had a great time solving these in our free time.

The book barely has 15 pages and the puzzles are not very interesting either. For $10 you can do better. I would not recommend this to anyone. After the experience with this book I am seriously reconsidering buying anything else from this author. Obviously very disappointed.
