About the Author
Judy and Mel Malinowski love to snorkel. They have sought out great snorkeling and cultural experiences for many years, traveling to 90-some countries from Anguilla to Zanzibar in the process. Although they are certified Scuba divers, the lightness and freedom of snorkeling keeps it their favorite recreation. They also enjoy surface diving, sailing and windsurfing. Mel, Judy and their three children have hosted students and cultural exchange visitors from Bosnia, Brazil, China, Germany, New Zealand, Serbia, and Turkey in their home, and helped hundreds of other families enrich their lives through cultural exchange. Working with exchange students and traveling as much as their businesses allow has encouraged their interest in the study of languages, from Mandarin Chinese to Hawaiian. They are graduates of Stanford University. Mel and Judy live in South Kohala on the island of Hawaii.

Snorkel the Big Island

I had previously used the 1996 edition of Snorkel Hawaii and was quite happy to see the improvements to this edition. Color pictures of locations and entry points. Some very nice pictures of reef fish as well. The snorkeling sites that I have visited are described accurately; Kealakeakua Bay, 2-Step, Kauna'oa Beach, White Sands, Wai'alea Beach, Kailua Pier.

This is a very good book for sorting out Big Island beaches. If you are just looking for a protected beach for the kids or some deep water this is the definitive book to have.

BTW, The author describes Kekaha Kai Park as a "VERY bumpy access road". The condition of this road varies from nearly drivable (after it has been freshly graded by the county) to nearly impossible. I have seen lost auto parts and pools of oil on this route, so use caution.

Great book

My wife and I love to snorkel but always have difficulty finding and safely accessing good spots. We have been thinking about visiting Hawaii next year and purchased this book to get ready for the trip. The book contains everything we needed to pick out the best spots for our abilities and interests. It also contains many helpful hints on equipment and techniques. We have snorkeled the Caribbean islands and Bermuda quite a bit and have never found a guide that was even close to this. Can't wait to go!

Best Big Island snorkel guide

My spouse and I have used the Malinowskis' snorkel guides for both Hawaii and Maui. To us, these guide books are invaluable. Snorkel sites are not "created equal." The Malinowskis tell you which sites are best in terms of what's to see and ease of entry. They also give you insight about best times to visit the site, and safety issues to be aware of. Snorkel Hawaii and their other guides are MUSTS for those who want to experience the beautiful under-water side of the Hawaiian Islands, and do so safely.

Peter Marhofer is Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine and Head of Paediatric Anaesthesia in the Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Therapy at the University of Vienna, Austria. Prof. Marhofer is also a leading member of the Austrian Regional Anaesthesia Group, which has developed and performed ultrasound-guided regional blocks (approximately 25,000 procedures) over the past 15 years and has held practical workshops in the field for participants from all over the world.

I have glanced at a few online articles and it seems like the book was fairly accurate

The History of Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt, by Jacob Abbott chronicles the life of Cleopatra VII (or, as we tend to refer to her, just Cleopatra). I have not studied Cleopatra in depth, so what I am writing is based off of this book. I have glanced at a few online articles and it seems like the book was fairly accurate. However, it is possible that an Egyptologist would disagree. Because of this, I am not taking accuracy into account when I review this book.
Cleopatra was the last Egyptian Pharaoh (or second to last, depending on how you interpret her son's rule). Born to a line where violence and politics were deeply connected to familial relationships, she was witness to and a participant of many family fights that ended in blood, betrayal, and death. Her ascension to the throne came at a time of civil war and was only accomplished with the aid of Julius Caesar. Whether through genuine affection or because she thought it would give her political power, Cleopatra began an affair with Caesar (who was already married) and, on his death, with Marc Antony (who was also married). In addition, Cleopatra was imprudent with her money, using it to constantly indulge herself. Her lavish lifestyle and her affairs with married men contributed to the fall of the Ptolomeic dynasty.

Abbott takes a long time to get to the topic of Cleopatra. The author first discusses the land of Egypt and the Ptolemies (Cleopatra VII's ancestors). While these can be related back to and are somewhat vital to understanding Cleopatra's life, the author spends too much time on them. It is not until Chapter Four that Cleopatra enters the book with anything other than a mere mention. Even afterwards, the author focuses a lot on the characters surrounding her, such as Caesar, Brutus, Cassius, Marc Antony, etc. At one point, there are ten pages in a row that do not even mention Cleopatra. While these figures are central to Cleopatra's life, Abbott could have discussed them while focusing more on how Cleopatra was acting during the crucial events, her motivations for influencing these men, etc. Now, I feel obligated to admit that the entire book was very interesting and I enjoyed learning about all of these people. However, when one picks up a book entitled "The History of Cleopatra" one expects to and usually wants to read about Cleopatra. I feel that the earlier chapters could have and should have been condensed and the later events written from an angle that involved Cleopatra a bit more than it did. This book was interesting but, written as it was, it should have been entitled something along the lines of "A History of the Ptolemy Dynasty and its Relation to Rome".

There are a few misused words and/or awkward phrasing of ideas. However, there are not enough to get in the way of reading and comprehending.

Overall, I would give this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars. Maybe this is a bit harsh; after all, it is interesting to read. However, as it is called, "The History of Cleopatra", I would deduce that Abbott's goal in writing this book was to inform the reader on the life of Cleopatra. He does this to some degree but digresses a bit too much.

Could not put this book down!!!

Wow. I have just finished reading this book and I am excited to share my review of it.
What a great book! The writing style is classic english but it serves the story very well. Granted the author expresses his Christian views sparingly throughout the book when it comes to certain matters (for example he condemns the practice of incest), I don't think it is over bearing given that it was written in 1859. It is extremely easy to read and you will find yourself lost in the wonders of this ancient world.
When you first read this book, you may initially become bored with the extensive typography the author included in the first chapter. Don't worry this is the author setting the scene for us. Skip this part if you want. The rest of the book that follows (from chapter 2 onwards) is the history of her life- starting with her ancestors and how she came to be. It is engrossing read, dramatic and full of suspense.
Each persons in this history is so real to life and the events that unfold before them is so spectacular that it makes Shakespeare stories look like children's writings.
I can't help but feel a mixture of feelings for some of the characters in this book- for example I pity Mark Anthony over his fate but at the same time I condemn him for his deeds. (I won't go into it too much as I don't want to spoil the story if you haven't heard it yet).
In short I highly recommend this book as an entertaining read- and I say entertaining because it doesn't read like a study text book. It has the feel of one telling another of a tale or story rather then asserting facts. It is a story mixed with drama, romance, action and suspense. And to know that this is history- wow!

Well written but sexist

I hate to be the annoying 'feminist' type on here, but this depiction of Cleopatra is pretty inaccurate. I realize that it was written a century ago, but it's definitely got more than a few flaws. This is certainly not the Cleopatra I had learned of in college and it takes the sexist viewpoint that Cleopatra was both a scheming woman hiding behind Caesar and an ignorant child that couldn't hold her own.
If you want to look at the viewpoint of those long dead for comparative reasons: get it since it's free.
If you couldn't care less about the rantings of an old dead gentleman, don't bother.
I'm not telling you to read anything by modern feminists, because their side is likely just as biased; as a matter of fact I insist that you should view both sides and make your own decisions about Cleopatra, but seriously: take this guy with a salt shaker.

In our "datasphere" world, we are exposed to information about events like the O.J. Simpson case in myriad formats from newspapers, television tabloids, and talk shows to the Internet. This media world, according to critic Rushkoff (The Genx Reader, Ballantine, 1994), is the next and only frontier. He argues that the media operate in society as a virus causing permanent and real social change. While his excessive use of viral-related concepts gets tiresome, the thesis that the popular media manipulate American culture is provocative and well argued. In Rushkoff's view, the media world is not monolithic, and its power can be harnessed to serve a variety of purposes. To illustrate his point, he examines a range of media activities, from mainstream offerings, such as children's television with it subtle, subversive messages, to the tactical strategies employed by "camcorder kamikazes" documenting alternative versions of reality. This timely book should be of interest to a wide range of readers.

Seminal Book On Media Theory, Memetics, Postmodern Culture

Since its release in 1994, 'Media Virus' has become Douglas Rushkoff's most influential and most popular book.
Rushkoff skillfully dissects such 'memes' as the O.J. Simpson trial, the Rodney King beating tape, and the pervasive influence of MTV editing. He finds Queer sexuality in 'Ren & Stimpy', social agendas with John Morgenthaler's 'Smart Drugs' campaign, and closes the book with an insightful and rare interview with the influential musician, raver, and performance artist Genesis P-Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, Pigface, Thee Majesty).
Much of what Rushkoff has written has become de facto teaching within university media courses, and Rushkoff's insights have been clarified and commented upon by many other social theorists and cyberpunks. This is a valuable book because its accessible easy to read style makes it a good introduction to a field that many find foreboding, difficult or complex. Rushkoff is careful to include case-studies and examples such as detailed semiotic analysis of 'The Simpsons', and to provide the relevant historical and industry contexts. The book's influence can be seen by the prevalence of Madison Avenue techniques subsequent to the book's publication, and the popularity of mutant media.

Are you infected by a Media Virus?

While some academics still worry about people watching television, Douglass Rushkoff celebrates the power of individuals to create their own media presence in "Media Virus."
In a witty style, Rushkoff praises the MTV generation for their ability to do - and understand - more than one thing at a time. Written in 1994, the book's seems a bit dated in its predictions... and more than slightly optimistic in speculating about the liberating aspects of new media to resurrect the political passions of Americans. Media Virus remains an excellent overview of the tensions and possibilities that television presents for political activists.

The book that unwillingly created a new trend in advertising

The information in this book, while it was written, was used primarily by artists. The whole concept of a media virus is basically twofold. 1)To make a subversive or controversial message (meme) seam innocent, harmless, or impotent. 2) To make that same message propagate itself through some means, including that very same controversy that you originally try to hide. Intrusion and propagation. Injection and infection. Just like a real virus, or a computer virus, only a media virus is a mind virus, a mental image, sound, slogan, event, or whatever, that gets into your head, stays there, and spreads itself by means of your mouth and vocal chords.
The book was meant to be, I believe, a mental exercise of awareness. It's tone and content seam more reminiscant of a late night cafine and marijuan-induced intellectual discourse than a research book. However, that doesn't mean that whats in the book won't teach you anything. Far from it. Some people in the advertising industry thinks of the concepts in this book as the next step in the evolution of marketing. Now that I've read the book, I can see lots of "media-virus" tactics used in advertising, from the simple, (the energiser bunny, floating from commercial to commercial), to the more complex and subversive (Calvin Klien's psuedo-kiddy porn jean commercials which got banned).
A media virus is, to put it simply, the most effective way available to those in the media to get a message from thier mind into the minds and conversations of the average viewer. If you've ever talked about a commercial before you've seen it, because somebody mentioned it, you're probably talking about a media virus.

About the Author

Hans J. Eysenck (1916-1997) was professor of psychology at the University of London and the director of its psychological department at the Institute of Psychiatry. He was best known for his experimental research in the field of personality.
