Service Design Patterns: Fundamental Design Solutions for SOAP/WSDL and RESTful Web Services, by Robert Daigneau

Web services have been used for many years. In this time, developers and architects have encountered a number of recurring design challenges related to their usage, and have learned that certain service design approaches work better than others to solve certain problems.

In Service Design Patterns, Rob Daigneau codifies proven design solutions for web services that follow the REST architectural style or leverage the SOAP/WSDL specifications. This catalogue identifies the fundamental topics in web service design and lists the common design patterns for each topic. All patterns identify the context in which they may be used, explain the constituent design elements, and explore the relative strengths and trade-offs. Code examples are provided to help you better understand how the patterns work but are kept general so that you can see how the solutions may be applied to disparate technologies that will inevitably change in the years to come.

This book will help readers answer the following questions:

  • How do you create a web service API, what are the common API styles, and when should a particular style be used?
  • How can clients and web services communicate, and what are the foundations for creating complex conversations in which multiple parties exchange data over extended periods of time?
  • What are the options for implementing web service logic, and when should a particular approach be used?
  • How can clients become less coupled to the underlying systems used by a service?
  • How can information about a web service be discovered?
  • How can generic functions like authentication, validation, caching, and logging be supported on the client or service?
  • What changes to a service cause clients to break?
  • What are the common ways to version a service? How can web services be designed to support the continuing evolution of business logic without forcing clients to constantly upgrade?

This book is an invaluable resource for enterprise architects, solution architects, and developers who use web services to create enterprise IT applications, commercial or open source products, and Software as a Service (SaaS) products that leverage emerging Cloud platforms.

A Great Addition to the Martin Fowler Signature Series
By T Anderson
I have been a fan of the Martin Fowler Signature Series for a long time. This book fit into the series great and filled in a missing link in the series.

One of the things I liked seeing was that the author does not think web services are a silver bullet. Right off the bat he warns that web services should be reserved for situations which out-of-process and cross-machine calls "make sense".

The book is broken down into seven chapters, an appendix, and a nice glossary. The chapters include From Objects to Web Services, Web Service API Styles, Client-Service Interactions, Request and Response Management, Web Service Implementation Styles, Web Service Infrastructures, Web Service Evolution, and an appendix Reference to External Patterns.

I felt the book worked at the right level of abstraction digging into details when needed to shed a deeper light on the subject at hand.

Each chapter contains several related patterns. Each pattern answers a primary question. For example chapter one Web Service API Styles cover the following 3 patterns that answer the question that follows below.

RPC API - How can clients execute remote procedures over HTTP?

Message API - How can clients send commands, notifications, or other information to remote systems over HTTP while avoiding direct coupling to remote procedures?

Resource API - How can a client manipulate data managed by a remote system, avoid direct coupling to remote procedures, and minimize the need for domain-specific APIs?

The other patterns covered in the book include Request/Response, Request/Acknowledge, Media Type Negotiation, Linked Service, Service Controller, Data Transfer Object, Request Mapper, Response Mapper, Transaction Script, Datasource Adapter, Operation Script, Command Invoker, Workflow Connector, Service Connector, Service Descriptor, Asynchronous Response Handler, Service Interceptor, Idempotent Retry, SOA Infrastructures, Breaking Changes, Versioning, Single Message Argument, Dataset Amendment, Tolerant Reader, and Consumer-Driven Contract.

Like the other pattern catalogs the book contains an online catalog of the patterns in the book. Although the online catalog gives you an overview of each pattern, the book contains a lot more detail about each one. I like the online catalogs. I often visit them to spark my memory about the patterns that I have read about in the books.

I like that the book limited its scope to the fundamental patterns relevant to web service design. It does not try to be all encompassing, which I think made it better than if the author had tried to be. The book does not cover enterprise integration patterns, workflow or orchestration, security, event-driven architecture, or choreography. The book does include a nice reference to external patterns in the appendix that provides a summary and where to go for more information.

I think each pattern is explained really well and the examples used do a great job of showing a possible implementation. I liked the end of chapter 7 where the author provides a nice summary about how each pattern hinders or promotes evolution.

The book also includes a nice glossary that provides quick reference to additional information on topics mentioned in the book.

The author does an awesome job of providing examples in different technologies throughout the book. The author uses a nice mixture of .NET and Java technologies. Some of the technologies used are JAX-WS, JAX-RS, JAXB, JSON, XML, Xpath, XSLT, WSDL, DataContractSerializer, XmlSerializer, and WCF. To top it off the author's writing style makes the reading really easy.

All in all I think every architect and developer should have this book on their shelf.

A refreshing read on service design
By Jeff Bouchard
I found Service Design Patterns to be a refreshing and well-crafted book. I would expect nothing less from anything accepted into the Fowler series. The author is quite clear from the very beginning that this book is intended to get the reader familiar with the most common approaches for implementing services. At first inspection of this statement, I expected to read lots of problem statements, with pattern definitions, and code samples to follow that mapped directly to SOAP/WSDL and REST. I was pleasantly surprised.

In the pages of the very first chapter this book challenges your standard thought on Service Architecture. Over the years I have asked many colleagues why they think SOA is a superior architecture. Often I have received the response that it reduces complexity, provides loose coupling, and is the most reliable way to allow disparate systems to communicate. Naturally, the next question is, well how are those objectives met? That question tends to put a wrinkle on the face of some of the most seasoned software architects. This book presents those questions, and paints candid responses before you get to page 10.

As you advance through the chapters, the author did a great job at codifying various approaches to web service design in a way that's not specific to any particular technology or specification. The pattern descriptions are easy to read, help the reader understand how to choose between them and the contexts in which to use them. The book provides an easy to reference handbook that classifies the patterns into categories that really make sense, and I think it gives practitioners a very useful vocabulary. Although the title says it's about creating services for SOAP/WSDL and REST, it's not a book about either. I am glad the author took this approach as there is plenty of material on both of these subjects. It might have been helpful for the author to address this up front.

Long story short, this book does a nice job of bridging the gap between Patterns of Enterprise Application and Enterprise Application Architecture. A nice reference book.

Far from an authoritative patterns book
By George Jiang
SUMMARY: This book might have presented some interesting topics and patterns for discussion and debate, but it is far from an authoritative patterns book. It lacks "The Narratives" in PoEAA, while the patterns in it lack the usefulness of those found in EIP.

When I saw this book on the Amazon, I purchased the printed book straight away without having had a quick read of the book, say from a pdf you can download on the Internet, since I really enjoyed reading the other two pattern books in the Martin Fowler series, i.e., Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture (PoEAA) and Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP).

It turns out to be a disappointment with this book.

Why? First, with the other two patterns books, in some cases I learned/relearned some core concepts of Enterprise Application or Enterprise Integration, while in other cases I learned some best way to describe what I had already learned from experience. Unfortunately, That has not been the case with this book about SOAP based Web service or REST Web service, except "situations in which out-of-process and cross-machine calls 'make sense'" (page 8).

Second, the patterns in the book generally try to prescribe what industry has been actually doing (often using a different vocabulary). The problem starts when you try to have a more clear understanding of the patterns by reading the examples for the patterns and by trying to make a connection between the patterns and actual SOAP or REST implementation technologies.

Take chapter 2 Web Service API patterns as an example. After reading the three patterns (RPC API, Message API and Resource API), you would think the SOAP document/literal wrapped style or SOAP RPC style are typical implementation of the RPC API pattern, SOAP document/literal bare (unwrapped) or POX as typical implementation of the Message API pattern.

No, not according to the explanation the author gives for the examples.

This is how the author explains the difference between RPC API and Message API (page 31), "Notice that each operation receive a single message argument. This is one very subtle characteristic that differentiates RPC APIs from Message APIs. While the former ..., Message APIs that leverage WSDL are specifically designed to receive a single message argument". But when you turn to page 234, there is actually a Single Message Argument patten for RPC API. What does the author really try to say? Convert RPC APIs to Message APIs by using the Single Message Argument pattern? :-)

Another peculiar in the book is to associate "Service Interface Classes" exclusively with generated service interface code in the contract-first approach (page 179) and describe the code-first approach as "In the Code-First practice, developers create annotated Service Controllers in languages like Java and C#" (page 180). While in reality, for RPC API and Message API, the widely used and more sound practice with code-first is to create annotated "Service Interface Classes" in Java or C# first and then write Service Controller that implements the interface.

There are definitely some good sections/patterns in the book. The sections/patterns I found beneficial are: Resource API (page 38), Request - Acknowledgement (page 59) and Asynchronous Response Handler (page 184).

Overall, this book might have presented some interesting topics and patterns for discussion and debate, but it is far from an authoritative patterns book. It lacks "The Narratives" in PoEAA, while the patterns in it lack the usefulness of those found in EIP.

HEALTH / MASSAGE

One of the oldest systems of medicine in the world, Ayurveda views the human being as intimately connected with the environment and all other life-forms. As this healing art evoloved, massage practitioners who were also Ayurvedic doctors developed a special system based on their own understandings of the needs of specific body types and their knowledge of the marmas, subtle energy points that respond to gentle physical manipulation. Providing a comprehensive introduction to Ayurvedic massage, this is the first book to make these techniques available to both the novice and the more experienced massage practitioner.

Ayurvedic massage works on both the physical and mental levels, transmitting a life-giving energy that assists all systems of the body to repair and renew themselves. If enjoyed on a regular basis, it can relieve muscular tension, tone the body, restore agility to stiff joints, and stop premature aging and wrinkling.

In clear and accessible language, author Harish Johari guides the reader through each step in the full-body massage, explaining what oils work best for particular body types and showing how to relieve imbalances and stimulate self-healing. More than 115 beautiful drawings illustrate his techniques. He also gives instructions for using massage during pregnancy and labor as well as after delivery to provide the new mother with an extra measure of support and comfort, and he follows up with a section on massaging the newborn baby. An additional chapter on therapeutic massage outlines special techniques and natural remedies for treating specific disorders, including arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica, and insomnia. The author also offers a complete guide to the traditional forty-day beauty treatment as practiced in India that includes a wide variety of recipes for fragrant massage oils prepared from rejuvenating herbs and spices along with formulas for nourishing facial creams and masks and beautifying clay baths.

HARISH JOHARI began his training the the principles of Ayurveda at an early age, studying in his native India with several different vaidyas, or traditional Ayurvedic practitioners. He is also the author of numerous books, including The Healing Cuisine, Tools for Tantra, Chakras, Numerology, and The Healing Power of Gemstones.

Traditional indian massage technique
By Eugenia
I have tried Ayurvedic massage (abhyanga) at the local store and loved it. Therapist placed me on traditional indian massage table (made out of beautifully crafted wood) and used sesame seed oil with traditional Indian herbs to soothe my aching muscles. I am also esthetician and I love body treatments that help detoxification and exfoliation process. I was intrigued to learn more about this technnique and for that reason, I purchased the book.

Book has very detailed explanations of how to perform this type of a massage and it also has pictures that explain hand placement and movements, which is very helpful. Some people who are more modest about the massage techniques may be off standish in adopting this technique or having this massage performed on their body. However, if one is open minded, remember that this massage technique has been used in India for thousands of years and there is certainly some merit to it providing health and relaxation benefits to the human body.

I am not sure that therapists in the West would perform all movements described in the book on all clients, because some of them may appear as overstepping client's personal boundaries. Book is very helpful about explaining the massage, the technique, sequencing and movements that help relieve particular ailments.

Not very readable, not well organized, introductory in nature
By Kenneth
While I may not necessarily say the author is not well versed in the art and knowledge of the subject, I found the content to be not very readable. The information is not well structured and I found the content to veer off, without staying focused.

Talking about Marma points for example, how about putting their location on the body, description, a picture and what they affect all in the same place? - why does this have to be spread out in different places? I did not find the chart / graphics at the end to be very useful in pinpointing the location of the marmas.

Globalization and Progressive Economic PolicyFrom Brand: Cambridge University Press

In Globalization and Progressive Economic Policy, thirty-six prominent economists analyze the impact of the emerging global economy on our national sovereignty and standards of living. Does globalization cause inequality? Instability? Unemployment? Environmenal degradation? Or is it an engine of prosperity and wealth for the vast majority of the world's citizens? The authors analyze problems, institutions and possible government responses, and conclude that globalization can be a force for good or ill depending on the degree of regulation that governments and citizens can exercise over its trajectory.

Review
"This book on globalisation stands out for its breadth of coverage, the quality of its contents and for the unusual perspectives it provides on the subject. The book shows how to understand the costs and benefits of globalisation and what citizens and governments should do to ensure that economic justice and economic stability are not among its casualties. A 'must-read' for scholars, students and policy-makers." Ajit Singh, Cambridge University

"Here is a book that will force you to reconsider much of what you think you know about policy in a globalized economy. Even if you do not agree with the conclusions, you will be enriched for having pondered these unconventional perspectives." Dani Rodrik, Harvard University

"This book sheds valuable light on understanding the central role international financial liberalisation has played in the recent Asian economic crisis, and on predicting what will be the consequences of the neo-liberal policies the IMF has imposed on Korea, Thailand and Indonesia. More importantly, the book provides many progressive policy ideas to those of us who have been bewildered by the propaganda that 'there is no alternative' to neo-liberalism." Soo Haeng Kim, Seoul National University

"Amidst the hype and half-truths about globalization, this collection stands out for its richly documented and path-breaking analysis. Destined to become the standard against which future critical analyses of the global economy are judged, this book is ideal for course use and is a must-have for the libraries of all social scientists interested in these critical issues." Juliet B. Schor, Harvard University

"The editors of and contributors to this compelling new book go far beyond the numbers, to set out and debate big ideas about the history of capitalist development in the twentieth century. Does the present revival of free markets - the neo-liberal regime - constitute a welcome return to the generally benign processes of global integration that preceded World War I? Or does it represent a dangerous undermining of the socially solidaristic embedding of market forces that was the great invention of the post World War II welfare state? As this book shows, the reappearance of all the old problems of political and economic instability and worsening inequality strongly support the second interpretation. Without new forms of state regulation such as those described in this volume, unfettered global capitalism threatens to wreck havoc with balanced, civilized, equitable economic growth." Bennett Harrison, New School for Social Research

Very insightful
By Steven Marton
Very insightful book. If only more people would read stuff like this. It offers perspectives from the negative side of the globalization argument that most people are unaware of. Unfortunately at times it does feel one-sided as well, maybe not presenting some of the positives. Nevertheless, facts are facts, and if you want to be informed you have to be aware of them. Maybe pick up another book to balance this a bit :)

Small warning: I believe this is a college textbook more than anything. It is a collection of papers written by various economists around the world. Therefore it can be long, dry, and definitely not light reading. But if you're hungry for information, this is it!

Against the globalisation bogy
By William Podmore
In this excellent collection, 37 contributors from around the world study the World Bank, the IMF, the multinational corporations, movements of capital, goods and labour, and the possibilities of national economic renewal. David Felix points out that the financial liberalisation of recent decades has led to slower growth of output, investment and productivity. Mehrene Larudee observes that Mexico, for instance, grew 6% a year with the industrialisation and protectionist policies of 1951-81; when it joined NAFTA, the economy, jobs and wages all shrank. Ha-joon Chang suggests that workers in multinational corporations have a far stronger bargaining position than employers make out. These firms often threaten to move, but rarely do. They have high sunk costs in physical plant, infrastructure, subcontracted production networks and services, skilled workers, local knowledge. Workers can take control of our workplaces, industries and countries. We can impose capital controls and reinvest the wealth we create in productive industry. `Globalisation', like the idea of God, is a ghost to frighten us. Eban Goodstein proves that protecting the environment does not destroy jobs, contrary to employer propaganda. Gregory DeFreitas argues against an open borders policy, while also opposing racial biases in immigration policy. He notes, "emigration represents a subsidy to the receiving country from the nation that trained them, as well as a loss of valuable talents to their homeland."
Arthur McEwan sums up the book's findings: "The neo-liberal regime that is being imposed on the world economy by the Bretton Woods institutions, the US government and other powerful public and private actors is doing a great deal of damage. It is a regime that harms people in all sorts of ways in the name of economic growth, but it does not even do very well at providing economic growth. The reign of neo-liberalism has not come about as some inevitable historical process, but has been actively constructed by the powerful actors that gain from its establishment. Alternatives exist, and the alternatives tend to work better."

Interesting but not systemetic
By Suckwoo Lee
I read this book in a graduate class on globalization. The word progressive in the title refers to the perspective of political economy ie, not the one of neoclassical or neo-liberalist. Arguments from economists, in particular political economists on globalization are somewhat hard to see. Authors focused on side effects of globalization. Their perspectives vary but they can be labeled as the view of race to the bottom against optimistic views of neo-liberalist. Its interesting to see what should be done against hard economic trend, globalization from the perspective of losers not winners. And this book has wide coverage from IMF, World Bank to TNCs, Global financial market, inequality. But I should point out some weakness of the book.
1. They doesnt offer any explanation on what caused the globalization at all. Globalization is presented as mere background to draw their conclusions. Some Marxist schools explained the process of globalization in terms of the diminishing rate of profit. But this book lacks such logics. I think the purpose of this book, offering alternative policy to speed down the process of globalization, drove authors in that direction.
2. My major is not economics but economic sociology. So I had some difficulties to follow all lines of the economists. But its not wholly my fault. I have had no such difficulty with economic journals like The Economist. The explanation of economic phenomena which are mainly macroeconomic one, is not kind to reader. I think authors assumed that this book would be read by expert policy makers not by mundane students.

The Brontes: Wild Genius on the Moors: The Story of a Literary Family, by Juliet Barker

In a revised and updated edition for a new generation of readers, the real story of the Bront sisters, by distinguished scholar and historian Juliet Barker.

The story of the tragic Bront family is familiar to everyone: we all know about the half-mad, repressive father, the drunken, drug-addled wastrel of a brother, wildly romantic Emily, unrequited Anne, and "poor Charlotte." Or do we? These stereotypes of the popular imagination are precisely that - imaginary - created by amateur biographers such as Mrs. Gaskell who were primarily novelists and were attracted by the tale of an apparently doomed family of genius.

Juliet Barker''s landmark book is the first definitive history of the Bronts. It demolishes the myths, yet provides startling new information that is just as compelling - but true. Based on first-hand research among all the Bront manuscripts, including contemporary historical documents never before used by Bront biographers, this book is both scholarly and compulsively readable. The Bronts is a revolutionary picture of the world''s favorite literary family. 32 B&W phots plus 25 in text drawings

Review
“Barker’s updated and enthralling biography of the Bronts carries us deeper into the everyday realities of their strange world. The stuff of lurid legend.” ([object Object])

“Definitive. Barker’s greatest service is to rescue the family of Charlotte, Emily, and Anne from myth, who were provided particularly hideous stereotypes by Charlotte’s first biographer, Elizabeth Gaskell. The doom and tragedy are there.” ([object Object])

Fabulous book; Kindle format, ??
By CF
I read this book in the first edition and am very glad to have an updated version I can get on my Kindle. However the Kindle edition leaves me with a question or two... NO TABLE OF CONTENTS?? In a book this size, why no TOC with clickable links? I was reading it from the library when I decided to buy it, and I can't just go to the TOC and click to the chapter where I was reading. Also since it is a work of scholarship, not just a story, people might want to refer back to something specific and need a TOC and/or an index to get to it, neither of which seem to have made it into this version. And if there are no illustrations in a Kindle edition, this should be disclosed up front before you buy it and find out you can't see the plates. So, if I could give it a 5 for the book and a 3 for the edition I would do that... so average out to 4... Edited to add... Not sure why the print book is called "Story of a Literary Family" and the Kindle book is called "Story of Three Sisters" - this is odd, it's not just the story of the sisters...

Well done, with some reservations
By Chris K.M.
Barker puts a lot of energy into righting prior biographers' missteps--certainly an important undertaking, but sometimes her efforts lead her down a less-than-ideal path. (Not having read a Bronte bio before, not even Gaskell's, I had no false impressions to correct.) She seems intent on salvaging the brother's reputation and painting Charlotte as selfish and unkind. She'll say Charlotte was "in a rage" or "hostile" but the letter she quotes as evidence doesn't support that judgment. Unacquainted as I am with Bronte family legend, I don't know if she's making an effort to correct a falsely glowing impression previously painted of Charlotte. She does say that biographers have been unfair to Branwell, the brother, and to Patrick Bronte, the father, both of whom had been painted with jaundiced brushes.

It's quite an accomplishment, bringing together all this information and painstakingly organizing it--I can't imagine the time and effort that went into this book. My primary complaint is that the book teems with far-fetched judgments (though a few seem insightful). It's par for the course for biographers to assume and imagine, but I prefer less reading-between-the-lines when it amounts to mere supposition. For instance, she'll assert that so-and-so "must have been there that night." Well not necessarily, maybe so-and-so was sick or out of town or otherwise indisposed. She'll read a motive into someone's actions when she has no way of knowing how that person was feeling, tending to be sympathetic with some people and surprisingly harsh with others. She goes too far when attacking certain individuals, for instance an old school friend of Charlotte's is pilloried by the end of the book. After Charlotte's death, the friend, who Barker says was a source heavily used by Elizabeth Gaskell, becomes a machinator intent on carrying out her evil agenda to the detriment of Patrick Bronte and Charlotte's widower, Arthur Bell Nicholls. The married woman whom Branwell apparently had an affair with is likewise evil, while he is painted as the victim of an immoral woman, but this doesn't jibe, considering all the drugging, drinking and carousing he'd been up to by then (he apparently had a daughter somewhere by this time, too, probably by a servant). She tries too hard to rescue Branwell. In the process of trying to right wrongs, she makes some of the same mistakes she accuses Gaskell of. She seems to decide a person is good or bad and then runs far and fast with her verdict. I get the feeling that the truth about some of the people involved lies somewhere between Gaskell's and Barker's portrayals (though again, I haven't read Gaskell's book, I only know what Barker states and insinuates).

Barker makes the big statement that the Bronte sisters' books wouldn't have been written were it not for their brother Branwell. Quite a claim. Yes, he was an important part of the Bronte tradition of childhood writing, but that doesn't mean he was responsible for their later success. She presents no evidence that his impact was that far-reaching. He had no direct hand in the writing of the books and it's impossible for anyone to tell what influence was most instrumental in forming the young women's extraordinary writing gifts; perhaps writing was simply in their blood/genes/makeup; probably it was the whole package--the way all their lives intertwined, their father's influence, their friends, the books they read, the environment, the schools they attended, their lives' particular twists and turns, combined with natural talent, etc, etc. That Branwell was responsible for their success is another supposition that feels unjustified, but this one is SO huge, and SO unfair, it has to be called into question.

The portrayals of the father and of Charlotte's husband come across as fair. By the time every one of Charlotte's siblings (and her mother) are dead, Barker also finally lets up on Charlotte. Emily comes across as especially enigmatic and intriguing; too bad there's not more information available on her.

The extent to which the juvenilia are quoted becomes very tedious after a while. I wish these sections had been heavily edited, but I suppose a real Bronte aficionado might find it all interesting.

A final criticism, and one that really niggles, is the writer's references to female authors as "authoresses" and female poets as "poetesses" and I don't mean when she's quoting, she does it herself. I think we can move beyond that now? It's one thing for a 19th century writer to do it, and quite another for a 21st century author (should she be called a biographess?). Charlotte Bronte the authoress had her brother to thank for her success? I'm sorry, this rankles.

It takes a fair amount of boldness to write a bio like this (that boldness also leads directly to the work's weaknesses). For a long book packed with minutiae, it truly is a page-turner. Kudos go to Barker for a fabulous job on a complicated task; the work is well thought-out, exhaustively researched, well-written--feels like a labor of love. Though I often found myself muttering, "oh come on" at some of the excesses, it is well worth a read.

Disappointing, too much irrelevant detail
By Briochegal
I'm disappointed in this book because I expected more insight into the writing lives of the Bronte sisters, however this scholarly book deals more with the life of their father, Patrick and their very early childhood. The author goes into excruciating detail about Patrick's early life, his religious beliefs, where he was assigned as a pastor, what each church looked like, who said what to whom about his assignment etc. The author did a lot of research and used every single bit of it, resulting in an overwhelming amount of detail and distracting information. Much of the book covers the years leading up to Patrick's marriage to the doomed Maria. I didn't see how this related to the development of the Bronte sisters' genius. Many of the quotes from letters and documents could have been left out. The book covers Patrick's marriage to Maria, the birth of their children, her death, and the girls' experience at Cowan Bridge school, which would become the notorious Lowood School in Jane Eyre. Most authorities acknowledge that Cowan Bridge was the basis for Lowood, so that isn't new information.
I was hoping for more insight into the adult lives and creative genius of The Bronte sisters. To be honest I quit about 3/4 of the way through, something I never do, since at that point it was clear the Brontes' writing years were not going to covered in much, if any detail. The author argues successfully with several of the claims of Mrs. Gaskill's book on the Bronte sisters. She does provide details about the Cowan Bridge School to which the girls were sent, and which caused the deaths of young Maria and Elizabeth.

You will like this book if you are interested in the life of a minister in rural England in the early 1800's, but I didn't think that the author made many connections between the Brontes childhood and their adult creative genius.

The Embrace: A True Vampire Story, by Aphrodite Jones

With an extraordinary talent for staring evil dead in the eye, New York Times bestselling author and journalist Aphrodite Jones plunges readers into the front lines of a modern nightmare.

On November 25, 1996, in their home in the lakeside community of Eustis, Florida, Rick and Ruth Wendorf were savagely beaten to death with a tire iron. The Wendorfs' new Ford Explorer was stolen, but this was no routine robbery gone bad. This was a crime carried out by one Roderick Ferrell, a sixteen-year-old self-avowed Antichrist. His human sacrifice was a testament to the unique and sinister bond of four brainwashed teens. Heather Wendorf was a straight "A" student, a petite blonde with wide-set brown eyes. Yet she had been heard to wish her parents "off the face of the planet." Heather never dreamed that when she joined her friends for a joyride one fall evening, her wish had already come true.

Including exclusive interviews with every living character involved in the case, The Embrace will forever change the way we look at one of the fastest-growing religious movements in the country, and its most vulnerable fold: our children.

Amazon.com Review
The "Vampire Clan" was a loosely knit gang of Southern U.S. teenagers who played at being outcasts and goths, and then pretended to be vampires. The twisted fantasies and dark mind of their young leader, Rod Ferrell, dominate The Embrace. Aphrodite Jones wastes no time in getting inside the troubled 16-year-old's head, detailing his elaborate delusions (he sometimes claims to be 500 years old; at other points, he was born 60,000 years ago and "sent to earth to destroy it") and his eerie abilities to control other troubled souls. With a Jim Jones-like knack for bizarre showmanship, Ferrell picked up followers and "true loves" with ease, then led his small, unmerry band on a mission from his home base in Kentucky to pick up yet another groupie--15-year-old Heather Wendorf--in Florida. The journey ended in violence in 1996, however, when Ferrell decided to kill Heather's parents with a crowbar. The group (Heather in tow) fled to New Orleans, where Rod promised his "vampire friends" would take them in; they were arrested a few days later. Ferrell, who now holds the record as the youngest inmate on death row, still insists he's the Antichrist.

Jones's account is rather spare, but feels balanced and honest. Like untold thousands of other American youths, Ferrell had the requisite bad childhood and unpleasant memories to later cause him both melancholy and grief. But unlike most of his peers, Rod Ferrell seems to have been born with a genius intelligence and the ability to memorize names, accents, and customs from different eras and places with ease, along with a talent to "perform" what he claimed to be. That he also happened to be deranged shouldn't be overlooked, but the real tragedy and concern here is that there might exist a rip in the fabric of our society large enough to allow healthy, normal teenagers like his group to fall through the tear and into the arms of animalistic hucksters like Rod Ferrell. --Tjames Madison

From Publishers Weekly
On November 25, 1996, in Eustis, Fla., Ruth and Richard Wendorf were found bludgeoned to death in their home, with their youngest daughter, Heather, 15, missing. Jones (Cruel Sacrifice, etc.) portrays Heather as a lonely girl whose desire to transcend her "mundane," privileged life brought her under the influence of a charismatic monster who introduced her to an underground world of teenagers dressing in black, practicing ritual bloodletting and dreaming of traveling to Paris and New Orleans. Was Heather part of a gruesome execution planned by self-described vampires or a brainwashed victim seduced by pack leader Rod Ferrell? Jones makes a case for the latter, minimizing Heather's involvement in the murders ("She was without an ego"). While Jones claims to have used "proven sources of journalistic research," she does admit to altering "certain details" and taking "certain storytelling liberties." Jones seems to think Ferrell was just born mean, and she turns him into a larger-than-life character, calling him "the embodiment of insanity." Her entire account suffers from psychological na?vet?, as she appears to believe whatever HeatherAwho stands to inherit half a million dollars from her parents' deathAtells her and dismisses those who contradict the girl, including Heather's own sister. Jones provides a good overview of the facts surrounding the murder and her prose glows with a voyeuristic intensity, but she comes off as so wholly biased in favor of Heather, "the victim," that her presentation lacks full credibility. (June) FYI: Jones's All She Wanted is soon to be filmed with Drew Barrymore.

From Booklist
With several best-sellers to her credit, including Cruel Sacrifice (1994), Jones returns with another expedition into teen true crime. The horror she investigates this time is the brutal murder of a husband and wife in a Florida suburb, perpetrated by Rod Ferrell, a magnetic, egocentric teenage vampire cultist, who lures a small group of troubled teens (among them the 15-year-old daughter of the murder victims) into a situation that forever changes their lives. The grisly circumstances are certainly right out of every parent's nightmare, with blood rituals, vampire role-playing, aberrant love, and dysfunctional family relationships, and it's the perfect stuff for true-crime writers. Unofortunately, Jones drops the ball. Although she draws on court records, news stories, and interviews to re-create the events leading up to and following the crime, her purple prose ("Only he could penetrate her inner sanctum"; "His strong arms made her melt"; "Rod filled her void"); clunky, confusing chronology; and reconstructed dialogue ("based on recollections of the participants") turn real-life tragedy into boring, almost absurd, melodrama. Expect some publicity-driven demand (and the inevitable TV movie), but most readers will find Jones much less satisfying than true-crime veterans Ann Rule (Bitter Harvest, 1998) and Joe McGinniss (Fatal Vision, 1983). Horrible tragedy and dull, dull, dull book
By Barks Book Nonsense
The back blurb of my copy of "The Embrace" claims "The Embrace will forever change the way we look at one of the fastest-growing religious movements in the country and its most vulnerable fold: our children."
Are they claiming Satanism or "vampirism" is one of the fastest growing religious movements? Since when? Or are they insinuating that modern day witchcraft = Satanism/vampirism. If that's the case someone really needs to do some homework. I sure hope the book is researched better than the back cover copy . . .
The Embrace is the author's pieced together account of a vicious true life crime perpetuated by a vicious, disturbed young man who believed he was immortal (among other wacked out theories). Rod Ferrell and his group of mindless followers are aimlessly traveling from Kentucky to Florida where Ferrell intends to add his ex-girlfriend Heather to his "coven", kill Heather's parents and steal their vehicle. The group then plans to head to New Orleans and crash with Ferrell's "vampire" friends. The sheep-like clan members don't take Ferrell's claims of murder seriously and laugh it off. Unfortunately, he wasn't kidding around and they find themselves accessories to a crime that is anything but funny.
I won't comment on how accurate this retelling of the events leading to the murder happens to be as I was completely unfamiliar with the case until now. The book reads like what I'm assuming it is: a collection of interviews pieced together by the author. The problem lies with the dull way the author presents her material. The book is extremely tedious and very repetitive and could've been trimmed by a hundred or more pages. This all makes for a very dull read for anyone not familiar with this case.

I knew she would messed this up.
By A Customer
Don't bother reading this book. I went to school with several of the characters in this book, the ones from Florida, and I was a friend of a couple of them. Aphrodite does a terrible job of writing this book, the story has no flow, and she revisits simplistic ideas, while breezing over major issues. There was more to the story than vampire novels and Goth music. Trying to explain Rod's action in that fashion is like trying to say, "Oh, well Hitler just had a bad family life and self-esteem issues."
The real question is how could sane people follow such a freak. I would suggest that you rent the movie "Vampire Clan" instead. I will cost less, it goes by quicker, and tells the story just as fully without any of Aphrodite's conclusions. Plus in the movie everyone looks a lot better than they did in real life.

Not a "Religion", a sick kid with a vampire fantasy life
By A Customer
This book is about a 16 American boy from Kentucky named Rod Ferrel, a Schizotypal wannabe "vampire" addicted to Anne Rice and Marilyn Manson music, who took his vampiric friends Scott, Charity, and Dana down to Florida where he used to live to basically kidnap his other friend Heather Wendorf and all go to the location of Anne Rice's "Vampire Chronicles", New Orleans, to live as an immortal coven for the rest of their eternal lifes. However, while in Florida, because Rod Ferrel was so stressed from escaping Kentucky, he killed Heather's parents with a metal crowbar in the process of liberating her and she didn't find out until later on the road. Her older sister Jennifer came home, found the dead parents, called the police, and Rod and his "coven" were arrested several days later, all convicted of murder and put in jail.

Sure, it may sound like an open-close case, but what makes it so interesting is two things...

1. The media really exploited this case as a way to slam the "Goth" culture, which T.V. knows nearly nothing about. Most of the emphasis they put on the case is that Rod Ferrel dressed and acted like his vampire character Vesago in his insane/immortal fantasy world. He was so insane and had such a Charles Manson/Jim Jones thing going with his friends, he made them all believe they were vampiric demons sent to Earth to open the gates of Hell. At times he sounds dillusional but intelligent, but at other times he just sounds like a misguided idiotic teenager, which he basically was. News and T.V. said he drank his victim's blood but the murders were actually not based on vampirism, but based suprisingly soley on stealing a car and not being arrested for that! So the actual crime wasn't a vampire sort of thing, it was a theft gone wrong of thing. The media though just because he dyed his hair black and wore all black he was a goth, but really he just had a highly disfunctional family and suffered from schizotypal personality disorder.

2. In the author's opinion, this double murder showcased a decline of moral and sweetness in the American youth, paticularly the alternative crowd. Indeed, she calls whatever this is, I'm guessing schizotypal disorder, a "religion", which implies it has something to do with Wicca/Pagan/Satanism, or some other alternative religion which isn't fair to groups of those crowds. They get enough crap from intolerant Christians enough, and don't like having an isolated sick, drugged up, bad seed teenager's crime being traced to them.

I recommend this book if you want to know about the case in great detail, what happened before the murders in Kentucky and Florida and how the coven came together, and after the murders and what happened at the trials. After reading the book, I felt sympathy for Ferrel, he was messed up and it sounds like his horrible mother had a very negative influence on him. I enjoyed reading about what Rod was tied up in while he was in Kentucky, and about how he almost went on a rampage there, got expelled from school, tried to kill his mom, drank his friend's blood, gained countless followers with his dark showmanship, and allegedly tortured cats and dogs. Buy it to get a good look at the possibilities of what can happen when unstable teenagers go absolutely out of control.
