and I opened up this beautiful book and I sobbed

I don't have a lot of time on my hands, and I have a tendency to busy myself as a couping mechanism to forget how much I truly, truly hurt. And tonight I came home from a double with homework to do and I sat in my room, and I opened up this beautiful book and I sobbed. I read it in an hour and then I took another hour to re read and re feel it all again, I literally have mascara stained pages.

But I cry because this book was my breakthrough. Todd has a heart after the Lord's, it's vulnerable, it's real, it's gut wrenching, it's every way you can say beautiful. And I was able to relate to him so much and so intentionally that my heart broke for him, and it broke for me too.

I'm so thankful to have randomly stumbled across his tumblr so many years ago. I am so thankful for every personal prayer this man has responded to for me because I needed a brother in Christ at the time to just love me for me, and not try to get anything from it.

Todd is one of a kind, and it shows in his writing and in his book. And I wish I could say all the pretty words to give this the highest praise but all I got is a voice im still learning to use. Read this and get a glimpse of Jesus' heart, let your heart pound and ring in your ears. Let the tears flow. Let yourself be loved.

Filled with Love and Encouragement

I can't even put into words how much I've been "patiently" waiting for this book to become available. A few years ago I started reading these quotes from this man named T.B. LaBerge. From my understanding this man was like best friends with C.S. Lewis and would sit around a campfire for hours upon hours worshiping and praising our Father and then sit down with a cup of coffee writing these amazing, crazy, raw, love filled, emotional yet unbelievably encouraging messages that would make you fall more madly in love with even just the idea of who Christ is and helped faith and love to grow much larger in our hearts. But then the truth was brought into the light. I simple click on a Tumblr page revealed it all. Todd B. LaBerge is very much alive (in spirit and in flesh) and well. Fully bearded (literally) with Christ' glory. I pray that this books brings you more love, laugher, faith, and compassion and patience into your lives. “To be able to communicate what our hearts most desire to speak is what we all long for.” -T.B. Laberge. Thank you Todd for being who you are and allow Christ’s amazing goodness to flow freely and evidently in your life.

This book is phenomenal

I was thrilled to finally be able to purchase this book! As a young, introverted, perhaps overly romantic christian man, I find that Todd's writing really strikes a chord with me. Although I think anyone who has ever loved will enjoy this book. Todd has a great gift for words, one that I envy. His tumblr is so encouraging, and I love everything he has to say about our relationship with Christ. Another reason I love his writing is because I really pick up on this deep sense of longing and searching for his true love. That's a feeling I understand well. It's so frustrating to have all these abstract thoughts and ideas about her, and to want so desperately for her to be concrete and tangible so that you don't have to imagine any more. You want it to be real, both now and forever. You want that chance to love her like Christ loved the church, to provide for her and be everything she needs in all the ways the ones before her couldn't. I really believe that I've found that now, and one of the main reasons I ordered this lovely book (other than for my own personal enjoyment of course!) is because my girlfriend is always so interested in trying to understand those feelings from my perspective. I used to write letters to the woman that I would spend my life with before we met, and I planned to give them to her when we finally met, but somehow I lost them, much to her dismay! This Valentine's Day, I've decided to order "Unwritten Letters To You" for her to try to understand how I feel about her and what it felt like to have spent my life waiting for her, as well as when we first met up till now. Plus, it's just a great book for anyone, really. I hope Todd doesn't mind me using his awesome book to help convey some of my feelings into relate able sentences for her. The Lord has given Todd a great gift, and he's a wonderful encourager of the saints. Keep up the good work, man. You're awesome

Domestic preparedness draws its modern roots from the combination of civil defense, disaster response, and the domestic response to terrorism incidents.

The casebook uses a traditional approach, presenting primary legal authorities--the U.S. Constitution, statutes, case law, executive orders, and presidential directives--along with policies and doctrinal publications, juxtaposed with notes and questions. Each chapter of the text focuses on a major domestic preparedness challenge: How did national emergency management strategy, policy, and doctrine evolve to its current form? How does the U.S. Constitution allocate roles and responsibilities between the federal government and the states, and how well does that align with public perception of roles and responsibilities? What are the federal government's powers and authorities? How are these powers and authorities made operational? How does the federal government ensure national preparedness? What is the proper role of the military in domestic preparedness and major incident response, and do current legal authorities support that role? What specific authorities apply to national security emergency preparedness? What mechanisms exist--public and private--to ensure private sector preparedness and response? The goal of the casebook is to teach both the law and the operational practicality of domestic preparedness.

Domestic Preparedness-Law, Policy and National Security

Published in early 2012 by the Carolina Academic Press and authored by Alan D. Cohn, currently an Assistant Secretary at DHS, this tome is a contribution to the literature and understanding of the field. Hopefully further editions will appear and given the intellectual and professional abilities of the contributors the analystical text will be improved. The passage of time in this field makes for some difficulty in dealing with currency. For example the September 2011 issuance of the National Preparedness Goal, [...] is not included. Also several Executive Orders referenced are now superseded, e.g. EO 12919 by EO 13603. E.O. 12919 [June 1994] superseded E.O. 10480 from 1969 among others. Also E.O. 12472 dating from 1984 superseded by E.O. 13618 of July 6, 2012, "Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions". See 77 Fed. Reg. 40779. Also see 47 CFR Parts 11 and 201-212.

Much of the text consists of extracts from government documents yet is still a useful compilation. But some of these documents have erroneous or incomplete premises and were designed as much to mislead as to inform. In particular the document issued lablel "Civil Defense and Homeland Security: A Short History of National Preparedness Efforts" issued by DHS in 2006 is a very troublsome document. Like most of the researchers on civil defense in US history it mistakenly concludes that while the Soviet Union largely outspent the US on its civil defense efforts from the time of enactment of Public Law 920 of the 81st Congress that expenditure included Soviet COG [continuity of government] and COOP [continuity of operations] efforts and failed to segregate out those elements as well as command and control issues almost mandated in the nuclear age by nuclear surety and safeguard issued. These programs were never a part of the civil defense program but a useful background can be found in Professor Paul Bracken's interesting book "Command and Control" published in the early 80's. COG and COOP were separately budgeted after 1957!

Given a text designed for students with some brain power--law students or others--and given the intellectual firepower of the principal contributors--I would have expected more sophisticated analysis of the issues and law.

The book does not really discuss the funding issues that drive much of the arena in this field. Or the confused oversight efforts of the Congress. No real effort to document defiiciencies such as lack of a domest crisis management preparedness system or chain of command. Nor does it discuss issues and policies crucial to domestic preparedness in any depth such as crisis communications, warning, and notification. The author deliberately excluded health preparedness from coverage yet it does have some useful coverage of that arena. Communications, cybersecurity, and energy preparedness are largely excluded from mention or analysis. Because of the danger of stovepiping of these domains they really need coverage in any such discussion or references to other sources.

Since the expense of text books grows, I would hope future editions contain more of the writings and analysis that might usefully be referenced.

For example, a google search of the term "domestic preparedness" is highly revealing as to other sources, as is DISASTER LAW.

As the text states this is largely a first draft with hopefully more editions to follow. Given its use primarily in the author's law school teachings I did find the case analysis of the book interesting even though I disagree strongly with the notion for example that SCOTUS is enthralled with the so-called POLICE POWER limitations on federal law or that the field of domestic preparedness largely rests on the COMMERCE CLAUSE of the Constitution.

If Congress specifically referenced the Constitutional provisions that supported each legislative act that might be useful. But despite some notable deviations the job of SCOTUS is to find Constitutional support for acts of Congress enacted into law and not to search for Constitutional infirmities.

Chapter 6-The Role of the Military in Domestic Preparedness is commendable even though somewhat in error on facts and law and could be improved greatly.

Again I thank the principal author and his contributors for their efforts and in the end it is a contribution even though more is needed. And of course my reason for concern and purchase of the book is that our democratic society's survival [a Republic in fact and law] may well rest on how this somewhat arcane legal subject is developed. Thus, for example, civil liberties, civil rights, and privacy and their connections to domestic preparedness need analysis. Also the laws referenced and policies need to have some analysis has to how they impact [or failed to do what is required] domestic preparedness.

One good question for students might be should FEMA be given specific public health and safety authority whether in the Stafford Act or otherwise for terrorism response and recovery or for biological,radiological, chemical, nuclear, explosive threats? None of these are addressed adequately by the Stafford Act or other FEMA authorities.

The course DOMESTIC PREPAREDNESS should be mandatory in all law schools! After all many lawyers advise government or due to boredom or skill end up as Mayors, Governors, or even Presidents.

The basics of entrepreneurship in 221 pages

Milton Chang is a successful entrepreneur who is well known both in Southern and Northern California.

This is the most direct, complete and useful book I have seen about starting and succeeding with a new technology company. The book is hardbound with a dust cover, and even the dust cover is full of nuggets that are worth taking away. Just the first two as examples:
- You can successfully start a niche business and grow it over time even if you have never done it before, so long as it is in your area of expertise.
- The "right idea" is only right if you can build it into a successful business

I have worked in high-tech management for years, but if I had read Chang's book back in graduate school, it would probably have inspired me to become an entrepreneur -- because it addresses every step and every difficulty in such clear language. Even Chang's own biography, part of the Introduction, is inspiring -- like if he could come that far, how much easier would it be for me?

I highly recommend the book. Amazon only seems to offer it as a used book through outside sellers. So you'd be better to search Milton Chang and find his website, which is just his name, and buy it there.

Outstanding insight into Borges and his worlds

The signature story 'Borges and I' is one I have read many times and love very much. Yet only through reading the commentary of this work did I understand the real nature of the game being played by the writer Borges with the person Borges. So too in reading of Borges early years I got a more complete understanding of the various aspects of his background influenced by his nationalist Spanish loving mother and his father who had the English library that would be the great source of revelation and pleasure to Borges throughout his life. In short reading this commentary gives wonderful insight into one of the most original writers the world has known. Borges' various fictional worlds are clearly and imaginatively explored in this outstanding commentary.

A drifting pile of thoughts about Borges. Nothing directly from Borges. The book was repetitive and irritating with its lack of focus and complete absence of any intellectual depth.
