Absolutely delighted
By Stevema
I have never written a review before but have felt it was the least I could do for what I have received from this program. I purchased this book on impluse, and at the time was committed to doing my free weights routine from Joyce Vedral's book (one of her many). I was about 3 mths into the Joyce Vedral program and was beginning to see some improvement (which is about the time period her bk tells you to expect). Not needing to try yet another routine I found myself buying the T-Tapp book. After reading it over the weekend I was truly inspired by all of the wonderful testimonies, before and after pictures and the stated benefits (beyond body shaping) that the book covers. I started the routine and was able to accomplish the first fifteen min routine on my own but was really left wondering if I was missing something in my form so I redeemed my coupon and bot the DVD for the Total Workout (which with the 30% off and the free DVD in the back it is a good deal I think). Let me tell you, I am SO impressed with the results. I fortunately don't have pounds to loose just shaping up. Ever since I had my son at age 21 I started a pilgramage of what workout routine would finally get me back into shape. I also thought in the back of my mind that one day before I was old I would like to exprience what it would be like to be fit again. I have done yoga (Bikram), pilates, gym with weights, free weights at home, callanetics, lotte burk etc. etc. The thing that most impresses me about this program is that the results are so fast. A couple of weeks in and I was really seeing toning, flatter stomach and most importantly losing back fat! I kept asking my personal trainer (during the gym work out days) how to lose that and she said more cardio, but I never could make it budge and now four weeks into this program it has significantly reduced. I can't wait to see the continued improvement. I have every faith now that my idle fantasy of having a fit figure again is on it's way (and some my argue is already here). And one last thing for all the moms out there nothing, and I mean nothing, has come close to the speed with which my tummy has reduced and is on it's way to being flat. I just had to share because this is a fitness program that has this 40 year old feeling excited and not afraid of celebrating my future birthdays. I have every expectation that I will be looking great (and feeling great as well).

I'm down one size in one and a half weeks, and that's not even the best part
By LeslieNNC
My energy and my mood have sky-rocketed! After years of extreme, undiagnosed fatigue and steady weight gain, I suddenly feel great. I am playful instead of dutiful with my children, I am dancing and singing along with the music station instead of slogging through my day listening to monotonous talk radio, and my husband and I are experiencing something akin to a renaissance. And I am loving my snug clothes getting loose and my loose clothes hitting the Goodwill box.

T-Tapp is the real deal. It really works, and works quickly. But be forewarned: it isn't without effort. It is completely unlike getting on a treadmill and zoning out for thirty minutes. Learning T-Tapp is more like learning to play an instrument. It requires thought, concentration, application, and practice.

For example, after doing Organs in Place all week, I suddenly felt a real, physical shift occur while I was doing "tighten, release, tighten, release" the other day. I had been thinking of that part as just strengthening muscles after organs were in place, but no--it is a huge part of the actual "putting organs in place" part! A week of going through the motions, and then sudden insight and a new level of effectiveness. This new understanding has changed the way I do that move a bit. Now, I was already seeing great progress before I *got* this fine point, but getting it really made a difference. In other words, faking it till you make it is okay, in fact, vital, as long as you keep trying to perfect your technique.

I am generally pleased with the book itself. Unfortunately, it can't download the information directly into my brain, but it does give detailed, well-illustrated instructions for each posture and movement, including the whys and the most common mistakes. It is written clearly, although the complexity of the subject is bound to make even the clearest writing overwhelm at first. I loved the index, and find it and excellent crib-sheet for navigating the website. While I enjoyed all the success stories, I did find the way they are inserted into the text distracting. I also found myself a little unsure a couple of times if a photo was illustrating good form or a common mistake, due to lack of clear captions.

Though I've never met her, I adore Teresa Tapp, and feel indebted to her for the years of work that she poured into developing the T-Tapp system, testing and documenting it's effectiveness, and bringing it to the public. She is not afraid of scientific studies! I perceive her as educated, knowledgeable and honest, and bought some things from her website I would never have believed were anything but a rip-off from any other source. (Think "cellulite.") But I'd like to see T-Tapp made more "user friendly." I think this book is a great step in that direction, but I hope there is a restructuring of the website in the works.

The T-Tapp website is a wonderful resource, and I spend a lot of time there these days, surfing for free, looking for inspiration as well as information. But is so difficult to navigate.

For example, I ordered several items from the site--which arrived promptly and were a real treat to get. But the ordering process was a real pain. I had to locate products by wading through categories clicking through several different pages, then check the boxes of products I wanted. So far, not too bad, but when I tried to check out, only the last couple of item appeared in my cart. I finally figured out that after selecting items you have to click on a *check out* link at the bottom of the page to put the checked items in your cart, or you lose the items when you move on to continue shopping. And the system times you out really quickly if you step away to get your purse or change a diaper. With all my bumbling, I had to start from scratch a couple of times. (I really wanted the stuff...I'd never have persevered for a more casual interest.)

I'd love to see website that's more intuitive to navigate, with a checkout system as easy as Amazon's.

It's sort of a metaphor for the beauty and frustration of T-Tapp itself, now that I think about it. It is more complex and requires more of us mentally than we expect from exercise, but we stick with it because the payoff is so huge. T-Tapp may get refined and more accessible, as the years pass, but until then, it's worth the effort. If it were the same old same old that fit our comfort level, it wouldn't be revolutionary, or worth your money.

Amazing
By Barbados
I am 55 years old. Long ago I learned to ignore book titles that over-promise. So I never would have given this book, promising the loss of 2 sizes in 4 weeks, a second glance except that Mary Shomon recommended it. Mary has a lot of credibility with me, as she wrote the best book I've read on thyroid issues: Living Well with Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You... That You Need to Know (Revised Edition) In Mary's newsletter, I clicked on a link to a short video of Teresa Tapp demonstrating one of her exercises. My interest was piqued. This was an approach to exercise I'd never seen before.

I grew up in a sports family and have exercised fairly consistently all my life, including weight training for 15 years with personal trainers and swimming competitively for many years with Masters.

However, no exercise I ever did prepared me for the T-Tapp program. I received the book in the mail ten days ago, read it through, and today am on Day 7 of the 15-minute workout (which takes me about 40 minutes because I'm just learning). In FOUR days (FOUR DAYS!) my clothes were fitting better. A pair of slacks I could barely button the week before fit just fine after four days of T-Tapping. I couldn't believe it. Nothing I've done exercise-wise has ever worked so quickly. Each day I continue to improve. I've had no muscle soreness but do feel a warm tingle (not at all uncomfortable) up and down my spine. And when I race up the four flights of stairs to my apartment, I'm not out of breath!

I have read a number of unfavorable reviews of T-Tapp as well as reviews from people saying they've done T-Tapp for two years and not noticed any real change in their bodies. My hunch is that this is because T-Tapp requires really good mind-body connection.

Developing a mind-body connection is difficult but absolutely essential to successful T-Tapping. If you're a person who can tighten any given muscle by willing it, then you've got great mind-body connection. I can, for instance, easily tighten a single butt cheek if I want :) Or I can tighten my lats just by thinking about doing so. It took me a long time to develop this and I needed help to do so (particularly, Pilates trainers helped me learn this). Going thru the T-Tapp moves without having a good mind-body connection is going to effect no change in one's body because it's not the positions that make the program work, it's the way the positions are done.

By the way, the reason T-Tapp devotees don't need to increase reps over time is because, as they do them, they go deeper and deeper into the exercises.

I just ordered the DVD - which, at something like $80, seems pricey - but, actually, given the price of gym memberships, personal trainers, special devices (Thigh Master, anyone?), etc, is not at all expensive. Aside from the ab exercises and Hoe Downs that I get on the DVD that comes with the book, I've learned all of the exercises (for the 15-min program) from the text in the book. I can't wait to be able to follow along on a DVD instead. I'm sure I'll move to the 45-minute workout once it arrives.

I've been to the T-Tapp web site, which I myself find a bit unorganized. And even though I will undoubtedly purchase more on T-Tapp exercises, I am not likely to get into teeth whitening etc with Teresa Tapp (I personally think it dilutes her area of expertise to offer nutritional supplements).

Still, I'm passionate about T-Tapp as an exercise program and am truly astounded by my own progress and how amazingly well I feel. My post-menopausal body is becoming more shapely by the day. And that's all I need to swear by T-Tapp and recommend it to all my friends.

“The Oz Principle describes what we’ve all suspected - that it isn’t just America in crisis, but the American character. The good news is that Connors, Smith, and Hickman also describe the ‘yellow brick road’ we must follow to rebuild the dominant qualities to achieve success.”

Before Adopting This Book For Your Business...
By William A. Reed
Before adopting this for your business it is worth considering whether it will achieve your goals and if it will have unintended consequences.

One of the first things you may notice in this book is that the authors have trademarked the commercial use of the two phrases "above the line®" and "below the line®". The horizontal "line" separates two types of behavior and attitudes, which represents the OZ principle. This might be some indication of their intentions.

Above the line thinking is about being accountable and below the line thinking is about "the blame game". In other words, the authors posit that we live in a culture of entitlement and pseudo-victimization where we are motivated to avoid accountability and blame others for failure. Consequently, this book (and its associated training courses) is often selected by management to obtain more "accountability" (and less excuses) from their employees.

Such a simplistic formula with a few twists and many anecdotal stories provide the necessary fuel for a highly successful book as well as a robust training and consulting practice. But, the expected results for your organization may not live up to the hype. This should be somewhat obvious on critical reflection, if you believe that people are not nearly as one-dimensional as this approach suggests.

I am all for accountability but have some concerns with this approach. First, its all-encompassing, individually-focused assessment of attitudinal performance is grossly over-simplistic, but interestingly appealing to organizations that are seeking simple solutions to their performance problems. It also appears to satisfy a number of individuals and managers who find solace in uncomplicated prescriptions to guide their staff behaviors. But, if you adopt this approach, be sure your managers don't use it to silence your employees and essentially reduce all problems to a single cause by attributing the accountability to one person.

According to the authors, when individuals are "confused", adopt a "wait and see" position, or try to "cover their tail", they are acting below the line, which comes across as a pejorative if not an accusatory label. This attribution is based on the notion that members do have the power to perform above the line should they so choose. So it is always deemed to be the employee's fault. What is missing here is the possibility that problems might lay elsewhere (such as in processes, coordination, resources, etc.) or result from multiple causes.

Above the line behavior is described as steps to accountability, which include "see it", "own it", "solve it", and "do it". While this is rather basic, it could be valuable training for some, to focus on basic execution rather than being paralyzed by inaction.

More important though is the primary flaw in this theory, which is its failure to deal with the realities of power and control in organizational settings. While there is a brief mention of empowerment (p. 203) the authors imply that this is the fault of employees. "...employees allow themselves to feel like victims of managers, management behaves accordingly, and results get held hostage by indecision and inaction" (p. 204).

In reality, information, connections, and resources are also important keys to empowerment, but somehow employees are accountable for gaining access to these without upsetting existing organizational structures or fearing any potential punishment for coloring outside the lines.

Some readers may be confused about the authors' concept of "accountability" which is the core theme of the book. Managers typically hold employees accountable which is clearly an expression of power. Yet, it is unlikely that employees could be seen as holding their boss accountable, at least with any punitive force.

Consequently, the authors sidestep this issue by redefining the word "accountability" to be "a personal choice to rise above one's circumstances and demonstrate the ownership necessary for achieving desired results" (p. 47).

However, simply redefining the word for their own use and pretending that it will somehow allow individuals to acquire resources and become accountable seems highly dubious. It is more likely that those with powerful positions will retain its pejorative use. In other words accountability is still a one way street in the land of OZ.

At the same time, the authors have a plan to "hold" employees accountable (now reverting to the traditional meaning of the word) by using a three step process (p. 192) that offers praise to employees who achieve specific measurable goals. While the employees may be invited to share in the goal setting, the asymmetrical availability of power and the ability to mete out rewards and punishments still reside with only one party.

Another underlying premise of this book is that individuals (whatever their position) are in complete control of the outcomes of their work. This is a long-held traditional view of organizations based on reductionist logic which has been significantly challenged in the Complexity literature (see my other reviews). In reality, very few substantive problems are the result of single causality.

To the extent that long-term outcomes are reliant on some forces beyond individual control, it is not just unfair to implement the version of accountability described in this book, but also possibly counterproductive. A better approach might be to drop the accountability rhetoric altogether and focus more on encouraging personal mastery, adaptation, and cooperative knowledge sharing. In other words, it is doubtful if the Oz principle is particularly good for accountability, motivation, or outcomes.

This book changed my Life
By Curtis W Hallenbeck
I read this book at a time in my life when it felt like the whole world was against me. I was going through a divorce, there were multiple layoffs at my job(including a close friend that I convinced to come work with me) and I had just had a huge amount of workload dumped on me with no extra pay. I very quickly fell into a victim cycle. This book helped me to See how I controlled my own destiny. By taking accountability into my own hands I was motivated to not let anyone or any event deny me from being successful. After reading this book and making a commitment to always strive to be above the line I was able to get a promotion, move on from my failed marriage, improve my health and complete my first Marathon and help others be successful in their own way.

Many reviewers have degrade this book as corporate nonsense to make the employees take the blame. I won't deny that probably is the case in several companies, however, there are great lessons in this book that helped me realize that blaming corporate gets me nowhere. My actions have the ability to improve my situation, but rarely does playing the blame game ever produce desired results.

A creative way to explore accountability
By M Douglas
This book helped me reflect on my life. It helped me to think about certain life changing situations where I choose accountability over victimization and vice versa. The book helped me to understand there is a fine line between the two and its a normal struggle to hold yourself accountable. This book has really gave me some insight that I will use at this junction in my life (and in the future) to make new strategic personal goals.

A book of lists
By Mom of 2
This book is good for simple, basic, social skill guidance. Each social rule has 5 or 6 steps to go along with it. However, there is not a whole lot of "conversation" opportunities in the book. I think it would be best for the kids who have a really hard time with any social skills, not those who are higher level and needing to "think through" the why of social skills.

*Starred Review* For any teen who has dreamed of being a star, this will serve as both encouragement and a reality check. YA authors like Alex Flinn, Aimee Friedman, and Garret Freymann-Weyr weave mesmerizing stories of talented kids whose lives revolve around music, drama, and the arts. They’ll meet videographers Stringbean and Goose; Becca First, Meghan’s rival for every solo and every role, but keeper of a sad secret; and the vanished Maia Crane, spotted during a bizarre production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Juxtaposed with each short story is an anecdote from artists familiar and less so: Clay Aiken, Andrea McArdle, Montego Glover, and Anthony Fedorov. The amalgam of swoon-worthy and unfamiliar household names is a reminder that TV, Broadway, movies, and records provide myriad opportunities for happiness and career satisfaction, if not fame and fortune. The short stories themselves, each of which is memorable for unique characters and situations, spotlight the importance of the arts in the growth and development—and even the survival—of a large portion of the teenage population. Complex and focused on far more than art as a high-school extracurricular, thisbreaks a leg in the finest sense of the word. Grades 7-12. --Frances Bradburn

The Circle, by Dave Eggers

The Circle is the exhilarating new novel from Dave Eggers, best-selling author ofA Hologram for the King,a finalist for the National Book Award.

When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company’s modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can’t believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, October 2013: As a fiction writer, indie publishing icon and education activist Dave Eggers neither suffers fools gladly nor treads lightly. With his signature mix of intelligence and highly literate snark, he dives headlong into contemporary crises--Hurricane Katrina, the Sudanese civil war--through the lens of a single character whose perspective we get to know intimately. In his new novel, Eggers tackles a modern problem that doesn't always seem like one: our near constant hunger for communication. When Mae Holland takes a job at the Circle, a tech giant with a utopian culture and cultlike following (Eggers didn't call it Schmoogle, but may as well have), she quickly loses sight of her friends, family, and sense of self in favor of professional success and social acceptance. As her Circle star rises, Mae succumbs to the corporate code of full disclosure, eventually agreeing to "go transparent" and let the public watch--and comment on--her every move. "Privacy is theft," decrees the company motto; "Secrets are lies." It's not subtle, but neither were "Harrison Bergeron" and 1984, and in its best moments The Circle is equally terrifying. Let's just hope it's not prescient. --Mia Lipman

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Most of us imagine totalitarianism as something imposed upon us—but what if we’re complicit in our own oppression? That’s the scenario in Eggers’ ambitious, terrifying, and eerily plausible new novel. When Mae gets a job at the Circle, a Bay Area tech company that’s cornered the world market on social media and e-commerce, she’s elated, and not just because of the platinum health-care package. The gleaming campus is a wonder, and it seems as though there isn’t anything the company can’t do (and won’t try). But she soon learns that participation in social media is mandatory, not voluntary, and that could soon apply to the general population as well. For a monopoly, it’s a short step from sharing to surveillance, to a world without privacy. This isn’t a perfect book—the good guys lecture true-believer Mae, and a key metaphor is laboriously explained—but it’s brave and important and will draw comparisons to Brave New World and 1984. Eggers brilliantly depicts the Internet binges, torrents of information, and endless loops of feedback that increasingly characterize modern life. But perhaps most chilling of all is his notion that our ultimate undoing could be something so petty as our desperate desire for affirmation. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Eggers’ reputation as a novelist continues to grow. Expect this title to be talked about, as it has an announced first printing of 200,000 and the New York Times Magazine has first serial rights. --Keir Graff

From Bookforum
Social media is easily lampooned, which makes this low-hanging fruit for a writer of Eggers's talent […] The satire here is often thin and fatiguing, or even unnecessary. […] This novel is not so much about what the tech world is like--it's about what we are like, what we do with technology, and where we very well might be headed. —Fiona Maazel

Secrets are Lies, Privacy is Theft
By Gary Schroeder
The Circle is Dave Eggers’ response to what’s happening to us all: the fundamental transformation of human society created by perpetual electronic connectedness. Surely you’ve felt it. I know I have...and I’m glad that a major novelist like Eggers has taken it on. Someone needs to.

Eggers wraps his criticism of this phenomenon around a company called The Circle, a thinly disguised version of Google. We experience the inner workings of The Circle through our protagonist Mae who has landed her dream job of being a “Circler,” one of the most coveted and hippest jobs that a young 20-something could hope for.

The Circle is, from the outset, a creepy sort of insulated company in which every possible need of the Circlers (almost all of whom are under 30) is provided for: on site parties headlined by notable performers, clothing stores stocking the latest products, residences and more. Circlers need never leave the campus (and why would they want to? Surely there could be no more exciting place in the world to be). Oh, one catch: make sure to always be participating in the company’s social media at all times; a failure to participate might indicate that you’re not a team player or worse....you might be antisocial. One thing the Circle cannot abide is a lack of complete participation at all times.

Mae quickly adapts to the ways of the Circle, easily embracing each new layer of required transparency and tracking. As a young person with nothing to hide, she can’t see any inherent difficulties in this prospect. Why wouldn’t you want to share as much as possible with everyone? Sharing--in the words of one of the Circle’s founders--is caring. Keeping information to yourself is actually an act of theft. Each piece of information you hide robs someone somewhere of the opportunity to benefit from your knowledge.

The Circle is always debuting new technological marvels, each released to the public in a way that will be familiar to most readers: the dramatic Steve Jobs-style personal product reveal. The applause is always thunderous. Crowds can never get their hands on the new product fast enough. Each new product is pitched as the obvious solution to a pressing problem...child abductions, home violence, neighborhood crime. And on the surface, they are, but there’s always the flip side; each a fresh incursion into privacy, a further reduction in the amount of public space in which people can hide.

Eggers introduces Mae’s ex-boyfriend Mercer as a foil to her unbridled enthusiasm for the works of the The Circle. He’s one of the only characters in the novel to ask questions, to object to this blind worship of technology and electronic monitoring. There are so many turns at which a normal person would be horrified at the prospect of The Circle’s growing power but Eggers allows only one or two characters to ever voice concern. He’s chosen instead to present the view through the eyes of the techno-faithful, showing how acceptance of such privacy incursions could be not only accepted but actively embraced. This point of view is all the more chilling. Mae’s view and that of her fellow Circlers is the perspective of youth and inexperience. They’re exhilarated to be a part of something so dramatically transformative. Their generation will put the world’s ills right. Finally human beings have the tools to fix their world’s shortcomings and they are the carriers of light.

Of course, The Circle is a dystopian novel. Like all such novels it does its best to hold a dark mirror up to present circumstances and encourage the reader to think about what they see. It is ham-handed in places and I occasionally felt like I was being beaten over the head with the message, but then again some of its more outrageous exaggerations of online culture are not really that far off the mark. We do live in a world full of techno-profits who promise to eradicate the ills of society through the aggregation of data...ever growing avalanches of data, what we eat, when we eat it, where we’ve been, what we’ve seen, what we purchase, who we know and what we think.

Eggers shouts at us to step back, take a breath and ask “what have we done?”.

This is a little close to home for me since my daughter works for a social media mega company but I did think Dave Eggers spin on what social media could do to/for the world is interesting and a bit of a scary read. Mae starts her career after college with the help from a friend, Annie who is going places at a Silicon Valley mega social media corporation. The Circle seems harmless enough and has some really great perks - ice cream, state of the art workout facilities, fine dining and living quarters. Soon she finds herself surrounded by events she is "required" to attend and post online to bump her ratings in the Circle community. "Sharing is Caring" is one of the company's mottoes and as Mae soon discovers, her popularity and place in the company is slipping due to her perceived lack of interest in sharing every aspect of her day with the world. The Circle begins new programs to track and pry into every part of the world's life and soon some around her begin to rebel. Her family and old friends will have trouble dealing with this obsession Mae has with her job. There is also a mystery man who could turn out to be the best thing for her or get her fired. All is not what it seems within the company. Is it the beginning of a perfect world for all or will it be closer to George Orwell's "1984". "The Circle" will be enjoyed (or feared) by those just about to enter the job market, already in up to their neck or those that fear social media in general. As I turn to hit the button that will send this review to various social media, I am already thinking differently about all my smart devices and behavior.

1. If a social media corporation were to achieve a complete monopoly of all public and private information, we'd be in danger of becoming a totalitarian society.

2. People often willingly give up their privacy for convenience, societal benefit, or a needy and self-centered desire for affirmation.

If these premises seem facile to you, you might not enjoy Dave Egger's new novel, the Circle.

The writing is straight, mainstream, third-person limited narration. You won't find any of the layered themes, complex metaphor, formal experimentalism, stylistic prose or psychological lyricism common in modern literary fiction. Whether you'll consider this a bug or a feature is mainly a matter of taste; but it's worth mentioning, given Eggers' McSweeney's pedigree (this is the first book I've read by Eggers, so I wasn't sure what to expect).

The protagonist is Mae Holland, an enthusiastic, naive and downright submissive young woman (surprise) who gets a job in customer service at the Circle, a company which, having subsumed Google, Facebook and Twitter, is on the brink of achieving the complete monopoly mentioned above. Mae does not think deeply or critically about anything that happens to her, and her motivations are often inexplicable. These are qualities that serve Eggers' narrative goals more effectively than they do the reader's enjoyment.

Eggers' goals seem to ride directly on the surface of the narrative. Almost every scene reads like a mini-lesson on the deceptive utopianism of the huge dot-coms, the superficiality and false emotional appeal of online "sharing", or the creepiness of voluntary corporate surveillance. Many passages set the narrative baggage mostly aside and are rendered either as polemic dialogues or speeches delivered by one of the characters. There are also many product presentations, designed to bring the creepiness into maximum relief. There's also a little sex and a lot of longing for a man.

In an interview, Eggers stated (seemingly with with pride) that he did not research technology or technology companies to write the book. The result is a skewed, pop-cultural vision of the corporate campus (few developers are to be seen, and no one is depicted actually writing code); a cartoonish start-up culture that doesn't mine into the strangeness that can be found in memoirs on the subject; and a few truly wince-inducing concepts about computer technology ("the cloud", for example, somehow does not require physical storage).

The lack of focus on the way technology actually works and the way software companies actually think is not a criticism in itself. But it leads to a lack of engagement with the truly complicated moral, social and political issues that arise with online privacy, over-sharing and corporate ethics. The treatment of these issues in the Circle is simplistic and one-sided. And there is little to be found *aside from* the treatment of these issues.

Beyond the transparent preachiness, the most disappointing part of the Circle, for me, was Mae herself. Although Eggers sometimes beautifully documents her thoughts (especially her rationalizations and distorted perceptions of others), she is, at bottom, not much more than a vehicle for what Eggers wants to say. There is no real fight - from Mae, the public or the government - against what the Circle is trying to do. If I should rightly be afraid that a company like the Circle will drive us all off a cliff, I'd be better-served by a novel in which the author doesn't simply hand them the keys.

Their first meeting is less than auspicious--with a somewhat soused Charles falling from a tree and landing at Eleanor's feet. While they agree to marry for their mutual convenience, Charles is not prepared to let a woman command his household. And certainly strong-willed Ellie refuses to let a rogue run her life. Yet the rakish earl can be quite charming--and even tender--when he puts his mind to it. And there's no denying the sensuous allure of his enchanting, innocent, yet utterly stubborn wife. Even though mad mishaps and very real dangers threaten their fragile union, they must follow where passion leads--to the rapturous warmth and brilliance of love.

La novela se deja leer
By Karen D. Folch
