Structural Masonry Design

This book is a good source of information in regards to masonry design; it is fairly complete and is easy to comprehend. I wish it had more in depth examples however.

Currently I am more involved in project management; however, once and a while I get the change to do some structural design or evaluate the work of other engineers. This book is a good source of current code updates for me.

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR
Something mysterious is afoot in my garden—something I want to share.

As a young girl, I loved to listen to the nursery rhyme that contains the phrase “How does your garden grow?” All my life I have been fascinated by the simple beauty of the garden, a sacred space where life is planted, nurtured, harvested, and resurrected.

I have cultivated many gardens in my lifetime. Their roots grow deep and stretch for thousands of miles. My first garden was a tiny flowerpot in the kitchen window of a small apartment in a poverty-stricken neighborhood of Detroit, where I was born and where my father completed his medical residency. Then, in Cleveland, where I was raised, attended school, worked, and married, I took delight in harvesting armfuls of hydrangeas and fragrant lilacs from my spring and summer gardens. And finally, in Houston, where I live now, my backyard gardens are graced with spectacular displays of azalea and gardenia blooms.

All of these treasured gardens have been nurtured by the seasons of life—fertilized by trials and watered with the tears of joys and sorrows. It was here in Houston that I learned how to grow a new and very special kind of garden—a place of hope and healing. It began, of all places, in a hospital room.

In a chance encounter, I was given an opportunity to volunteer in a lay ministry at The Methodist (now Houston Methodist) Hospital in Houston’s renowned Medical Center area. This ministry would enable me to put to use hospital skills I had cultivated while living and working in Ohio, along with the compassion born of my faith.

As a lay minister, my responsibility was to visit critically ill patients—to pray with them, to visit with them, and, most important, to listen to them. Each time I walked into a patient’s room, I created a loving, compassionate, and nonjudgmental space—a safe place that allowed hurting people to share their hearts and stories with me. On the surface, listening appears to be a passive activity, but in reality I found the act of listening to be a powerful force that creates an active exchange. As hearts are unburdened, a space is created for healing and hope to flow back in.

I visited with patients of all faiths, and as they felt permitted to share intimate details of their lives without fear of judgment or ridicule, defenses came down and they talked with me about their encounters with the Divine—their most private, personal confirmations of God’s presence in their lives. These emotional testimonies included a full spectrum of encounters: experiencing the awe of God in nature, music, art, literature, and Scripture; angelic interventions and near-death experiences; and encounters with some of the most mysterious of the spiritual gifts, including prophetic visions and the gift of tongues. Week after week, I sat in rapt attention as people told me of angelic bedside visitors, visions of loved ones who had already passed into the heavenly realm, and messages of comfort spoken in dreams in the middle of the night.

This four-year ministry was drenched in redemptive tears, and I was witness to the profound healing that occurs when people are permitted to embrace what they have experienced and to courageously share their stories of encounters with the Divine. One such story moved me so deeply that it literally changed the course of my life.

As I sat next to his bed, “John” told me of his struggle with heart disease that led to an eventual heart transplant. Before his transplant, he experienced several heart attacks, and during his last one, he died. He described in detail how he was carried upward, away from his body in the emergency room, and could see everything occurring as the medical team tried to resuscitate him. He even described the pretty butterfly hair clip that one of the nurses was wearing around her ponytail (which she later confirmed to be true). Then John described being carried up through the ceiling and into a different realm, where he was completely embraced in a warm mist that radiated love in its purest form. As he leaned back to soak in this loving embrace, a voice began to speak. In a very personal conversation, John came to know the Creator, the lover of his soul, whom he had denied and pushed away his entire life. John accepted the love being offered to him and was told he would be sent back to his earthly life.

As he finished his story, John leaned over and looked deeply into my eyes. “Honey,” he said, “it is now my life’s work to tell others about the incredible love that God offers to each of us, and to encourage them not to wait until the hour of our deaths to accept and share it. We all have important jobs to do for the Kingdom while we live here on earth.”

John’s powerful testimony convicted me deeply. I, too, have experienced profound encounters with the Divine throughout my life, but I had been fearful of sharing them with others—fearful of being labeled as “one of those.” John’s courage to share his story finally freed my heart to fully embrace the truth of my own encounters. What a healing moment that was for me!

In a dramatic course-correction that could only have been conceived by God, this quiet little Texas homemaker is now an author. John’s story, along with many others, inspired me to offer this freedom and healing to countless others through the pages of this book, by opening the door to my own private garden.

As we near the beginning of my story, there is someone I want to introduce to you. She is as mysterious as the garden you are about to enter. While wrestling with how to write this story, I had a dream, and in my dream I heard the voice of my Lord say very succinctly, “Use an angel!”

I awakened with a start and thought, What a great idea! But how in the world do I do that�.�.�. I don’t know any angels!

The next morning I snuggled up on the living room couch with my dogs and a steaming cup of coffee, and as I gazed out the tall windows facing the garden, I thought about this possibility of creating an angel to help me. What would he, or she, be like? Would this angel be fierce and warrior-like? A little bit intimidating? Or would it be soft, feminine, and gentle? Would it be a shimmery, invisible kind of figure, or would I be able to see it clearly? Would it talk, or would it just point at things as the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come did in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol? Would I be the only one who could see it? Whatever its characteristics were to be, I hoped it would carry with it the wisdom of heaven�.�.�. something I desperately needed in this new venture.

Soon, the character of an intriguing angel named Margaret began to take shape in the eyes of my heart. I would write a fictional story about her, one where she would help me share and make sense of some of the miraculous encounters with the Divine I have had. Some of her attributes admittedly come from my own personality, and the experiences she helps the character Jenn talk through are also my own, but her wisdom�.�.�. well, that belongs exclusively to God.

Margaret brings the wisdom of heaven into my garden, creating a sacred space where I find the freedom to embrace and to share my encounters with God. My story, based in orthodox Christianity, is written for people of all faiths and sentiments, including the absence of faith. We are all spiritual beings on a human journey to find love, acceptance, mercy, mutual respect, and a connection to a Creator.

So, now I invite you to step into my garden, and into this story, with your heart and all of your senses fully engaged. There, among the roses, God’s loving presence is revealed to all who are willing to enter.

Truly, heaven is closer than you think.

Not orthodox Christianity

I would caution readers of this book to exercise discernment. The line between fiction and biography is exceedingly blurred. The book is listed as fiction but the main character shares the authors name and even the dog in the story shares a name with the authors dog. So what's true and what's fiction?

The line between 'Christian' and New Age is also exceedingly blurred. The note from the author at the beginning of the book says, 'My story, based in orthodox Christianity, is written for people of all faiths and sentiments, including the absence of faith. We are all spiritual being on a human journey to find love, acceptance, mercy, mutual respect, and a connection to a Creator.' I disagree that her story is 'based in orthodox Christianity' but agree that it's written for people of all faiths, including the absence of faith. 'Orthodox Christianity' (based on the Bible) says that angels are 'ministering spirits'. And the angel Margaret in the book says she's been sent to 'guide' Jenn. Sounds like a 'spirit guide' to me? Which is not 'orthodox Christianity' but is New Age, pagan or spiritualistic

Beginning each chapter with a passage from Scripture might lead one to think that yes, this story is based in orthodox Christianity. However, the story between those chapter headings offers more to generic 'spiritual beings' seeking any kind of spiritual experience than Christians seeking to draw closer to God. From the author's note again: 'Margaret brings the wisdom of heaven into my garden, creating a sacred space where I find the freedom to embrace and to share my encounters with God.' Far more is said in the book about Jenn's encounters with the angel Margaret than any encounters with God.

Perhaps Jenn sees her dreams as 'encounters with God'? The dreams span quite a bit of time in Jenn's life but alas, she has never really understood the dreams until Margaret explains them. Or until something happens - like 9/11 - which causes Jenn to think 'Ah, that was my dream!' So what's really the point of all these dreams, supposedly from God? It seems they weren't given for any benefit of the Body of Christ, Jenn's fellow believers. The 'supernatural' dreams and visions seemed to serve no purpose beyond making Jenn feel she is special. And the book seems written to encourage people to seek and embrace the supernatural than to seek and embrace the one true God.

of communicating - she allows her inner beauty to come out.

Delightful book!

What a delight it was to read "Come to the Garden" by Jennifer Wilder Morgan! As I was a little skeptical about angels and dreams, this fictional (more memoir) book opened my eyes about the way God could work in our lives. Jennifer uses an angel named "Margaret' who helps Jennifer understand the dreams and tough events in her life that did not always make sense. As Margaret walks through the beautiful garden with Jennifer, she uses humor and butterflies to help Jennifer learn about how God works in our lives with "coincidences" and the lessons we learn through our walk with Him. This book is a delight with her descriptions of nature - the beautiful flowers, bluebirds, stars, and butterflies. I want to read this delightful book again with a cup of coffee in my backyard and slowly savor Jennifer's words. Enjoy!

There is not much left to the imagination as Gray explains exactly what men and women should say and not say, what they should do, touch, lick, and more. As in his earlier books, Gray's metaphors lack grace, and his writing is far from polished. If you can see past his silly language, however, much of his advice is quite good. Although the explicitness of his sexual descriptions may bother some, and his poor writing skills may bother others, Gray's book is a reasonable and useful title. And given his huge popularity, public libraries should have this on their shelves when he starts appearing on the talk shows. Gray's What Your Mother Couldn't Tell You & Your Father Didn't Know (1994) failed to match the success of its predecessor, the megaselling Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus (1992), so this time out, Gray titles his offering seemingly in hopes of stimulating brand-name recognition and, hence, consumer loyalty. Still, the antinomy of Mars and Venus, of masculine aggression and feminine absorption, of masculine flame and feminine smoldering, is apt when discussing the differences in men's and women's sexual response that underlie all Gray's advice on sustaining satisfying sexual relations. Also underlying his counsel, and making this guide different from many others as well as appealing to the new moral conservatism of the 1990s, are his endorsement of monogamy and his repeated assertion that "great sex is God's gift." In accordance with those emphases, Gray writes not so much of the "mechanics of sex" as of the "mechanics of making sure you have sex," and his chapters bear titles such as "The Joy of Quickies" and "How to Rekindle the Passion" as well as the more expected "How to Drive a Woman Wild with Pleasure." Gray's a plain, even pedestrian, writer, capable of talking about sex in a manner neither lubricious nor clinical, and that capability, along with the title, helps ensure that the half-million-copy first printing HarperCollins has ordered will, as they say, move. A great read-aloud book for couples!

I've always admired John Gray and believed that men and women truly are from different planets. My husband and I don't communicate well, about much of anything. We hit a crossroads in our marriage and I knew we had to do something or there wouldn't be another anniversary to celebrate. So I bought Mars and Venus in the Bedroom. OMG! Dr. Gray might has written this book for my husband and I! The stories, the suggestions, the ideas.....all hit home. AND it's working. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone that needs a little pick-me-up in their marriage, something to get you started. I was ready to give up and get out, but this book made both of us realize that we CAN learn to communicate, we can grow closer and we can enjoy all the intimacy that we once had. Thank you Dr. Gray!

An Excellent Resource

We had lost connection in our marriage. Sex became something that was routine and did not increase our dedication to each other. This book helped me better understand the difference between how men and women express and feel love. It is not a "how to" book on sex. It is a study of a connection that can easily be lost in a marriage. I will definitely read this more than once and will hold on to it in case a space comes between us again in the future.

About the Author
Tom Cheetham, Ph.D., has degrees in philosophy and biology. He is the author of Green Man, Earth Angel: The Prophetic Tradition and The Battle for the Soul of the World (2005), and The World Turned Inside Out: Henry Corbin and Islamic Mysticism (2003). A frequent contributor to Spring Journal, he also prepared the comprehensive bibliography for Archetypal Psychology: a Brief Account, The Uniform Edition of the Writings of James Hillman, Vol. 1.

A Tour De Force Ending Of Cheetham's Trilogy

Have eagerly awaited this work. A brilliant exposition of the relevance of Henri Corbin's worldview for our dying culture. The world is in the soul, not the soul in the world. The complete trilogy is a survey of how we have come to this impasse, and offers the beginning of a means of an escape. The texts of the three Abramanic faiths as a theophany not a prison. To quote the young boy to St. Augustine, "Take and Read..." The World Turned Inside Out; Green Man Earth, Earth Angel; After Prophecy by Thomas Cheetham.

this book can be found for way way way less than these greedy middlemen sellers...great book....look elsewhere. Amazon should offer it for what it is worth......priceless and affordable. i can't believe folks think other folks will spend that sort of money on something that can easily be PDF'd, etc

These selections cover her English language recordings made after she came to America, with some old favorites represented. Maybe this should have been a two-disc album, to include her earlier work in German.

The best one to buy if you must have only one. I own many but love this compilation because the emotion of the originals is there and the sound quality is very good, which is something that cannot be said for all Dietrich CDs.
