Noir Urbanisms: Dystopic Images of the Modern City (Publications in Partnership with the Shelby Cullom Davis Center at Princeton University

Dystopic imagery has figured prominently in modern depictions of the urban landscape. The city is often portrayed as a terrifying world of darkness, crisis, and catastrophe. Noir Urbanisms traces the history of the modern city through its critical representations in art, cinema, print journalism, literature, sociology, and architecture. It focuses on visual forms of dystopic representation--because the history of the modern city is inseparable from the production and circulation of images--and examines their strengths and limits as urban criticism.

Contributors explore dystopic images of the modern city in Germany, Mexico, Japan, India, South Africa, China, and the United States. Their topics include Weimar representations of urban dystopia in Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis; 1960s modernist architecture in Mexico City; Hollywood film noir of the 1940s and 1950s; the recurring fictional destruction of Tokyo in postwar Japan's sci-fi doom culture; the urban fringe in Bombay cinema; fictional explorations of urban dystopia in postapartheid Johannesburg; and Delhi's out-of-control and media-saturated urbanism in the 1980s and 1990s. What emerges in Noir Urbanisms is the unsettling and disorienting alchemy between dark representations and the modern urban experience.

In addition to the editor, the contributors are David R. Ambaras, James Donald, Rubn Gallo, Anton Kaes, Ranjani Mazumdar, Jennifer Robinson, Mark Shiel, Ravi Sundaram, William M. Tsutsui, and Li Zhang.

Review
"Noir Urbanisms deserves to be widely read and debated. In describing why inequalities or disasters have occurred, this becomes a lesson for the architects and urban designers master-planning cities of the future."--Esme Fieldhouse, Blueprint Magazine

From the Back Cover

"This collection of essays is a welcome addition to urban cultural studies. By bridging the history of dystopian imaginings and urban social and cultural history, it opens up new territory for interdisciplinary discussion."--Jordan Sand, Georgetown University

"This is an exciting collection ranging across an impressive disciplinary span, including not only history and film studies but also anthropology, geography, and modern languages. The volume combines scholarly rigor with political and social engagement, and is full of eloquence and insight. It speaks to researchers across the arts, humanities, and social sciences who are concerned with the place of urban spaces in the dystopic visions of modernity."--Jackie Stacey, University of Manchester

Learb all about valvetrains for a SBC
By Ronny B.
I have a 1995 LT1 in my Firebird, that I rebuilt, and so I wanted to learn more about the valvetrains and camshafts. As David Vizards says, ask 5 people what canshaft you should get and you will probably get 5 different answers. There is a lot to learn from this book, and I love David's approach, of let me try it and see what the results are. There are so many variables involved from what you want to end up with to how you intake, heads and exhaust all flow. David trys to help you sort it all out, but I have not been able to really get my brain wrapped around this subject yet. Not this books fault, just a lot for me to learn.

Great book
By Bob S.
This is an excellent book...explains and illustrates the characteristics of a camshaft and how the rockers affect the cam timing. Lots of math. Takes some studying to clearly understand WHY the cam overlap effects combustion performance.

Another can't miss from David Vizard!
By Michael Bennett
David Vizard is one author that I buy whatever he writes because he is that good! If he says I should know it, I believe him. He covers things that de-mystify this often mis-understood area of hot rodding that you must know to go faster! Some things contradict "popular knowledge" or common myths and he tells you why. This man knows his craft. This is the one area that can have a HUGE impact on your overall engine performance and you had better understand the ins and out of valve-trains and camshafts. This book will teach you!

Language Notes
Text: English (translation)
Original Language: Chinese

From the Author
This book focuses on how to apply Sun Tzu's wisdom to business and personal success. The content has three unique features. 1. A new translation of "The Art of War." 2. Excerpts from other translations clarify meanings. 3. Text is simplified into 50 rules for strategic thinking enhanced by useful examples.

Because the Chinese ideogram can be translated with different meanings, I searched world libraries to find different translations. Where translations vary the different meanings are shared in the text. To read "Sun Tzu: The Art of War for Managers" is to read the essence of many translations.

The 50 rules for strategic thinking will assist in your search for useful applications of Sun Tzu's wisdom. Each rule is supported by examples showing how this rule has been, and can be, applied. In a new section in this edition, contemporary managers discuss their personal experiences in applying these rules.

I have twice been invited to China to discuss applications of Sun Tzu's wisdom to business. These trips have enabled me to validate the Oriental Wisdom in the book.

My wish is that you will find the simple wisdom of Sun Tzu useful in your business and personal life.

Sun Tzu: The Art of War for Business Managers
By R. Lines
I have read and heard of many business professionals trying to apply Sun Tzu principles of war to business leadership but never in such an in depth, coherent and eloquent manner.
The author several times equates business with war. I am not sure that the parallels can be drawn as easily as he asserts. This does not diminish the application of the principles of the book; however the idea that business is war is a bit misguided in my opinion. Business can be done with partnerships and comradery within an industry.
The book utilized numerous quotes. These seemed rarely helpful yet are definitely a fun addition that I approve of. In addition the multiple interpretations were not only useful to understand the material but also insightful as to how to view the passages and their applications. The examples the book draws on not only helped to clarify how the principles can be used but also lended great credibility to the belief that these lessons can be used in a much more peaceful environment than the battlefield.
Many lessons seemed like common sense, but are so commonly overlooked in today's world that it's about time they were written down so that business managers do put thought into these situations. For instance in chapter 6 the book mentions the advantages of taking the initiative. In this instance the firm will need skill preparation and information.Simultaneously it is common to not have enough time, resources or information. This seems simple but it is not often that a manager will think in these terms exactly.
The "Ten Minute" lesson format kept the book fast paced and did not become monotonous or tedious as some contemporary business writings seem to be.
10 minute chapters or lessons give a comfortable class like feel that I believe enhances learning. I thought this was innovative and a huge asset to Michaelson's book.
While I did thoroughly enjoy the book there were certain parts that seemed morally questionable. Business will probably never be a completely free of corruption or disreputable behavior however executives should strive to be more upright in their actions. Michaelson's book teaches that in war and business it is a fine tactic to take advantages of another's misfortunes, deceive for advantage and use spies. Chapter 7 in fact has a sub section on employing deception. If your troops or employees do not feel that these are acceptable tactics then, according Sun Tzu, you will lose. The first constant factor listed in Chapter 1 is "moral influence" troops and employees are better motivated and more committed at what they do when they believe their cause is righteous.
These actions may be palatable in war but do they have a place in modern business.
I would highly recommend this book to business students. As a graduate student with some work experience I find the lessons learned very functional and relevant to today's professional world. I also would say that the lessons are made simple enough so that an undergraduate or inexperienced business individual would have no trouble understanding the concepts or teachings presented within the book. I could assume that even the seasoned business leader could glean some new knowledge from the many teachings within or at least be entertained by the work.

Simple yet Comprehensive Translation into Modern Management
By Jef Diamond
Michaelson, who has also written a few other books related to Sun Tzu's ancient text, takes a very usable approach in the "Art of War for Managers". It is very well thought out and has numerous instantly recognizable examples in the modern context. The language is easy to follow and direct quotes from the original Sun Tzu often have several different translations provided for better understanding.

The 50 Strategic Rules are divided up following the 13 chapters of the original "Art of War". Each Rule is a 5-10 minute read, so it's very easy to pick-up from your last read after having the book placed to the side for a while. Although, it is important to note that each Rule is not very in-depth, I believe it was meant to provide quick and simple insights. Each Rule includes a quoted Sun Tzu text, usually a helpful quote from a famous leader, then a well written manager's commentary to describe and support. The easy accessibility to these quick lessons are extremely useful when looking for inspiring ideas while making important business decisions.

Part Two of this book includes a very useful "Practical Applications" chapter. While not completely practical, the concepts are generally well accepted and do inspire ideas that are very practical. Having specific examples of modern business implementation is where many "Art of War" writers usually fail. To see this added section affirms that Michaelson thought his book out to tactical ends.

I've read many attempts at the "Art of War" and Michaelson's books are easily on the top of that pile. Although I do see duplication in his newer work "Sun Tzu - Strategies for Marketing", the layout for "Art of War for Managers" has made it more useful to me. It has benefitted me to have read both.

Sun Tzu in the Consumer Packaged Goods Environment
By K. OCONNOR
Tactics and strategies do not need to be new but a reminder or refresher. How an individual understands and uses these tactics again or differently is the beauty of Sun Tzu. Each chapter of the book acknowledged a unique and simple way to handle various business situations from planning, maneuvering, using teamwork as well as truly understanding your competition. Through such knowledge, businesses can avoid wasting time and energy by planning the right strategy.

Sun Tzu is based on military organization and not all can be combined to business. Sun Tzu believes, "the way to avoid what is strong is to attack what is weak. Look for lightly defended positions." This may not always be the case as some potentially weaker products may not be performing in the consumer packaged goods market like a larger brand but they could be fulfilling a niche or paying the retailer to be on the shelf. No matter how much their sales are lackluster, they may not only have the unique niche market your product may not satisfy, they are also helping the retailer achieve his balance sheet goals. Secondly, I disagree from an ethics standpoint that price deception is a useful tactic in negotiations. There are laws in the consumer packaged goods marketplace against price collusion with competitors and employees can quickly lose their jobs and careers if caught in violation.
Businesses must continue to gain share and strength by understanding the marketplace and being on the pulse of change through innovation and education of its products. Sun Tzu reminds us how to do this. It is integral to be flexible with the unsteady economic and recessionary times. The world is in trying times and as a manager I must continue to study competition and be ready to change my tactics at a moments notice. As Sun Tzu reminds us, there needs to be an evolution of growth using teamwork, strategizing battlegrounds and understanding the wants and needs of consumers to gain an advantage over the competition.

Review

From the reviews of the second edition:

"This fascinating book deconstructs the process of producing graphics and in doing so raises many fascinating questions on the nature and representation of information...This second edition is almost twice the size of the original, with six new chapters and substantial revisions." Short Book Reviews of the International Statistical Institute, December 2005

"When the first edidtion of this book appeared in 2000 it was much praised. I called it a tour de force of the highest order. (Wainer, 2001), Edward Wegman (2000) argued that it was destined to become a classic. Now, six years later this very fine book has been much improved." Howard Wainer for Psychometrika

"...The second edition is an impressive expansion beyond a quite remarkable first edition. The text remains dense and even more encyclopedic, but it is a pleasure to read, whether a novice or an expert in graphics...this book is a bargain...The second edition is a must-have volume for anyone interested in graphics." Thomas E. Bradstreet for the Journal of the American Statistical Association, December 2006

"I find myself still thinking about the book and its ideas, several weeks after I finished reading it. I love that kind of book." Mark Bailey for Techometrics, Vol. 49, No. 1, February 2007

"Warts and all, The Grammar of Graphics is a richlyrewarding work, an outstanding achievement by one of the leaders of statistical graphics. Seek it out."Nicholas J. Cox for the Journal of Statistical Software, January 2007

"The second edition is a quite fascinating book as well, and it comes with many color graphics. Anyone working in this field can see how many hours the author (plus coworkers) has spent on such a volume. … Demands for good graphics are high and this book will help to wetten the appetite to create future computer packages that will meet this demand. An occasional reader will get insights into a modern world of computing … ." (Wolfgang Polasek, Statistical Papers, Vol. 48, 2007)

From the Back Cover

This book was written for statisticians, computer scientists, geographers, researchers, and others interested in visualizing data. It presents a unique foundation for producing almost every quantitative graphic found in scientific journals, newspapers, statistical packages, and data visualization systems. While the tangible results of this work have been several visualization software libraries, this book focuses on the deep structures involved in producing quantitative graphics from data. What are the rules that underlie the production of pie charts, bar charts, scatterplots, function plots, maps, mosaics, and radar charts? Those less interested in the theoretical and mathematical foundations can still get a sense of the richness and structure of the system by examining the numerous and often unique color graphics it can produce. The second edition is almost twice the size of the original, with six new chapters and substantial revision. Much of the added material makes this book suitable for survey courses in visualization and statistical graphics.

From reviews of the first edition:

"Destined to become a landmark in statistical graphics, this book provides a formal description of graphics, particularly static graphics, playing much the same role for graphics as probability theory played for statistics."

Journal of the American Statistical Association

"Wilkinson’s careful scholarship shows around every corner. This is a tour de force of the highest order."

Psychometrika

"All geography and map libraries should add this book to their collections; the serious scholar of quantitative data graphics will place this book on the same shelf with those by Edward Tufte, and volumes by Cleveland, Bertin, Monmonier, MacEachren, among others, and continue the unending task of proselytizing for the best in statistical data presentation by example and through scholarship like that of Leland Wilkinson."

Cartographic Perspectives

"In summary, this is certainly a remarkable book and a new ambitious step for the development and application of statistical graphics."

For a select few, it is a fascinating read
By Keith McCormick
This is an unusual book. It should be of interest to those who have to display data in graphic form, but it is not a typical book of that kind. A subset of those who enjoy Tufte (The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, 2nd edition) or Cleveland (The Elements of Graphing Data, Visualizing Data) will also enjoy this. This book does not attempt to coach you on how to make good graphics, but if that is your goal it attacks a related, important aspect: rules that connect the data and the graphic. Obviously then, it might be of great interest to computer scientists and theoreticians. The grammar described in the book is also object oriented in design which helps to make the code quite elegant. In my instance, I am a "power-user" of the SPSS statistics software package, and the ideas in this book have been partially implemented in SPSS since around 2005 (Version 14.0). This is absolutely not a user's guide or a how-to manual for using SPSS. If, however, you already have a working knowledge of the latest SPSS graphics and its related programming language then this book will put that whole approach in context, and massively increase your understanding of the technology "behind the scenes". Many technical audiences might benefit regardless of their using or not using SPSS Statistics.

Unlike Tufte, you will find no hand drawn graphics, or illustrations crafted in Adobe illustrator - they can be both beautiful and effective but such graphics would not belong in this book. All of the graphics here are created using a computer and a grammatical description and arise directly out of a data set. Making a graphic elegant and clear is the work of the designer, the purpose of the grammar is to insure that the graphic is tied to data, and to separate graphics that make sense from graphics that are non-sense. To paraphrase the book, graphics that are grammatically correct may or may not be ugly, but can never be meaningless.

In a brilliant final chapter the author explains that the famous Minard's Napoleon's march chart (see Tufte) has some incorrect data, and that Minard took some liberties with the data. The conclusion: a beautifully designed and crafted graphic does not assure 100% accuracy. Whereas to quote the author, "a graphic without a concept of a variable is not a statistical graphic". So, if you make the variables available (in a data set) to your audience you make it all that much harder to mislead with graphics. Although Tufte's books have a VERY different style, avoiding lying with graphics is an important, recurring theme.

So if you are technically inclined, and especially if you are an SPSS user, seek out this book. It is a great companion to the literature on chart aesthetics. Before you dive in, note that this book is several hundred pages long. SPSS user's should look over the "GPL Reference" first to determine if this is a topic you are willing to dedicate time to.

This book changes the way you think about statistical graphics
By Raphael D. Mazor
I boought this book because I am getting increasingly interested in data visualization. I've played around with ggplot2, and went to Edward Tufte's seminars, and eventually found my way to this book.

As the other reviewers mention, this is NOT a how-to book. It's a much deeper, fundamnetal treatment of how data and graphics connect, and how we represent them. So, it's not as much a "useful" book, except insofar as it changes the way you put together your next graph.

This book crystalized a lot of concepts I already understood, though only vaguely and intuitively. Like, a legend and an an axis are really the same thing, and that a stacked bar and a pie chart are identical except for the coordinate system used.

It's quite a dense slog to read this book, so I recommend you pick it up and read a few pages here and there, and follow through on the issues that catch your interest.

It's not for everyone, but I suspect it could make anyone communicate better through graphs.

skip details (esp. formalisms); instead get hilighter ready for principles, perspectives
By Mark A. Weiss
Most of what other reviewers say has factual accuracy. But first I must say that the "subset" of people who enjoy CLEVELAND (WILLIAM S.)'s works will enjoy the Grammar of Graphics book.

Sorry, but people who enjoy TUFTE are not potential candidates for this book because Tufte has way too little to say about graphics (despite his books, lectures, which ultimately are about $$$ for Tufte). Tufte's main thing is his admonition "don't do chart junk" followed by his second favorite thing: join with him and disparage the "cognitive style" of PowerPoint. The former is true, but is not terribly subtle. As for the second, the tool of PowerPoint need not be used in the boring "cognitive style" with bullets and "branding". I for one have made plenty of PowerPoint presentations totally unlike these.

The summary of "subset"s of folks: William S. Cleveland followers: yes, you'll love this book; those who mistake Tufte for the ultimate graphical guru probably will find this book "too much". Note that the author of the Grammar of Graphics book literally says how Cleveland wins the citations contest in his book. No surprise, because Cleveland has made many creative developments for statistical graphics and has also studied graphical perception. (As just ONE of a myriad of examples: residuals are very badly "mis-read" by our perception when there is a steeply sloped curve; residual in y- direction may be very large, but we see only a very much shorter perpendicular distance.)

(Finally, in fairness, Tufte has had two good ideas -- but only two compared to Cleveland's several dozen. Tufte's tics-at-data (for x- and y- separate marginal distributions [essentially 1-D scatterplots made by tics]) and Tufte's white-grid-run-thru-of-bar-plots are his two contributions of any substance.)

OK. Thanks for bearing with my review which, thus far, has covered the Cleveland and Tufte subsets of readers. Time for the Grammar of Graphics book character itself --without context of being a Cleveland reader or a Tufte Reader.

If you have not experienced reading Cleveland's books (Elements of Graphing Data and/or Visualizing Data), I admit that this book will be more difficult for you.

The above point aside, you should know, like other reviewers said, that this book is not a how-to. Nor is it like Cleveland's books -- chock full of guideline principles. There are plenty of principles in the book, but with its size, the CONCENTRATION of principles to pages of text is low.

THE BEST PERSPECTIVE ON THIS BOOK: The best perspective is to not sweat consuming every little detail. Especially skip all the formalisms (even though this is ostensibly the topic of the book!) Instead, just enjoy. This is one book definitely to apply your highlighter to. Forget the formalisms completely. Concentrate on the important points made throughout -- but you'll need to highlight them. If you come to the book from Cleveland (William S.) it will be easier for you to spot the important points. Just don't think you have to learn details and formalisms.

One tip -- Cleveland reader or not -- whenever there is any text suggesting a perspective, that text may well be calling for your highlighter -- not always, but often.

Go for principles, perspectives and ignore formalisms. You'll be more at ease and enjoy the book.

If you think you might do both William S. Cleveland's books AND the Grammar of Graphics book -- no question, do Cleveland first (Elements of Graphing Data [more basic] and Visualizing Data [more advanced statistical questions addressed graphically]).

P.S. I don't recall if other reviewers mentioned it, but Wilkinson (author of Grammar of Graphics) is creator of the SYSTAT statistical software package.

The Price of Citizenship: Redefining the American Welfare State, by Michael B. Katz

For Michael B. Katz, the term "welfare state" describes the intricate web of government programs, employer-provided benefits, and semiprivate organizations intended to promote economic security and to guarantee the basic necessities of life for all citizens: food, shelter, medical care, protection in childhood, and support in old age. In this updated edition of his seminal work The Price of Citizenship, Katz traces the evolution of the welfare state from colonial relief programs through the war on poverty and into our own age, marked by the "end of welfare as we know it."

Katz argues that in the last decades, three great forces—a ferocious war on dependence, which has singled out the most vulnerable; the devolution of authority within both government and the private sector; and the application of market models to social policy—have permeated all aspects of the social contract. The Price of Citizenship shows how these changes have propelled America toward a future of increased inequality and decreased security as individuals compete for success in an open market with ever fewer protections against misfortune, power, and greed. A new chapter, written for this edition, explains how these trends continue in the post-9/11 era and how the response to Hurricane Katrina exposed the weaknesses of America's social safety net.

Offering grounds for modest optimism, the new chapter also points to countervailing trends that may modify and even partially reverse the effects of recent welfare history.

From Publishers Weekly
Arguably the leading historian of American social welfare, Katz (In the Shadow of the Poorhouse; The Undeserving Poor; etc.) has written a defining history of post-Nixon transformations of America's welfare state, including its nonprofit and private sectors (private pensions, health insurance, etc.). Three forces drive the welfare revolutions, he says a savage, selective war on dependence, a push for devolution of power from the federal level to the states and an often na‹ve, ill-conceived use of market models shaping a "master narrative of policy reform" involving "the discovery of a crisis of numbers and costs (rising rolls); the assignment of blame to morally suspect persons (the undeserving); the reduction of program size through controlling eligibility more than reducing benefits (reform); the measurement of achievement by fewer beneficiaries (success); and the failure to track the fate of those denied help (willful ignorance)." Katz's clear articulation of underlying forces and patterns never overwhelms the rich, compelling detail of specific histories involving workers' compensation, disability insurance, unemployment, medical care, food security, urban policy, urban housing, homelessness, Social Security and welfare. Highlights of earlier history serve to dispel common myths (there was no golden age of faith-based private charity), explain the genesis of modern policies (always products of conflict and compromise) and provide perspective for current proposals (which often echo past mistakes). Katz quotes and refers to a wide range of experts as well as political actors, producing a vivid sense of immediacy matched with keen reflection. Without preaching, Katz meticulously reveals the folly of emulating disintegrative forces rather than balancing them. This is a masterpiece of contemporary history. (Apr.)Forecast: This will be important reading for people in the social welfare fields as well as interested citizens, and a six-city author tour will help bring the book to public attention.

From Library Journal
In this exhaustive historical and political study of welfare in 20th-century America, political scientist Katz (Improving Poor People) focuses on the destructive influence of the market economy on social welfare programs. He argues that "the market's radical individualism, its processes of marginalization and exclusion, and its subversion of the public sphere" has a "corrosive impact" on our society because it "threatens our national cohesion" the very basis of citizenship. He deplores the transfer of political authority from the federal government to the states and worries about our country's future in an era when such benefits of citizenship as healthcare, unemployment compensation, and aid for the elderly will be denied those most needing public assistance. Well documented and passionately argued, this lucid and persuasive defense of public welfare insists that undoing the welfare state will change the reality of American citizenship, making it not a right but a privilege open only to those with money. The effect will irreparably tear apart the country's social fabric and increase the divide between poor and wealthy Americans. For academic and most medium and large public libraries. Jack Forman, San Diego Mesa Coll. Lib.

From Booklist
Katz is a premier social historian of U.S. public policy, with a focus on welfare and education policy. After sketching "The Invention of Welfare" in the American context, Katz describes the combination of programs--social insurance, employee benefits, and the much-maligned "welfare"--that constituted "The American Welfare State" as of 1980. He then examines how that structure has changed, discussing the changing American city; the Family Support Act of 1986; "Governors as Welfare Reformers"; deficits as a guarantor of austerity; privatization of government functions; and the "end of paternalism" in employer-sponsored benefit plans. (He also explores changes in workers' compensation, disability and unemployment insurance, Social Security, health care, and the few remaining "poverty programs.") For Katz, these changes, capped by elimination of "welfare as we know it" in 1996, "signaled the victory of three great forces--the war on dependence, the devolution of public authority, and the application of market models to public policy." Together, these forces are narrowing and devaluing citizenship and pushing unemployed and underemployed Americans to the margins of our democracy. Mary Carroll

The best book yet on the fate of welfare
By pnotley@hotmail.com
Michael Katz's monograph on the end of AFDC and the rise of market systems as the preferred solution to everything is not the wittiest and most readable book one could have on the subject. Nor is it the most passionate. But it is thoroughly documented and it manifestly shows how the attack on the welfare state in the nineties has increased inequality and decreased security for most Americans. Katz starts off with a fine description of poverty and inequality in the modern American city. He emphasizes, as others have, the very generous government and public support for suburbia at the expense of the inner city, especially in transport and housing. Suburbia's most privileged and coddled residents then turned around to denounce any welfare and assistance to people not like themselves as the most horrendous abuse imaginable of taxpayer funds. More, I think, could have been said about the rise of the conservative ascendency, particularly the weakness of the Democratic Party and trade unions to serve or to mobilize any liberal alternative.
Katz then goes on to provide useful and informative chapters on governors as welfare reformers, mayors as welfare reformers, the limits of private charity, the decline of employer benefits, increased risks for the injured and disabled and unemployed, "reform" of social security, new market models for health care, the fate of food stamps and legal services and the end of welfare. Each chapter is useful and will be very illuminating for those who only read The New Republic. Consider the case of John Engler's welfare reform, which boasted of its removal of people from the welfare rolls and their placement in paying employment. But how much of this was the result of the reforms and how much was it that of a booming economy? A study found that when compared to a control group, Engler's programs had increased adult employment by only 2.4%. And in Detroit 60% of children under five still lived in poverty in 1996. The even more hyped case of Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin (now the Secretary in charge of getting hysterical over anthrax) is even more convincingly deflated. Thompson's Learnfare, a program of denying benefits to families whose children do not attend school, certainly seemed tough and punitive, but even state agencies agreed it hadn't actually increased school attendance. It may appear encouraging that from 1987-1995 Wisconsin's AFDC payroll dropped by a nearly a quarter. But 75% of that decline occured in his first term, before his plans had time to take effect. The centrist Democratic mayor of Philadelphia has been much praised, but the city was still losing people and perhaps 27% of the population was below the poverty line. Privitization in Indianopolis actualy increased long-term debt, while taxes rose and homicides beat new records in 1994 and 1997.
Empowerment zones are also deflated: "In June 1999 the Philadelphia empowerment zone reported that it had helped businesses create four hundred jobs, but it could not say whether the jobs already existed or were projected for the future." Private charities have never, Katz points out, cared for most of America's needy. Many private charities depend on government funds for their work, and much of charity goes to religious denominations, as opposed to poor per se. The distinction can be seen in 1994 when the governor of Mississippi asked the states' 5,500 churches to adapt a needy family, only 15 followed through. We then move to the steady evisceration of company benefits, along with attempts to gut workmen's compensation and unemployment insurance.
Katz is good at pointing out the flaws in conservative attacks on welfare. He discusses the 1995 campaign against disability benefits, which relied on anecdotal evidence, despite four major studies that found no evidence of widespread fraud or abuse. A hotline to report fraud found only 83 serious cases out of a million eligible children. Katz also discusses the conservative panic over social security, such as how their vaunted "Chilean" model has high administrative costs and in 1995 was actually losing money. The Enron debacle only vindicates Katz's criticisms. Katz also details the failure of for-profit hospitals, with their own habits of "waste, fraud and abuse," and the debacle that is managed care. He notes how legal services in the United States receives only a fraction of the money alloted to it in Ontario and Britain. He deflates conservative propaganda that AFDC causes illegitimacy (if so, why is single parenting rising when the value of AFDC benefits had been dropping for decades?) He notes that welfare reform has proven more successful at reducing rolls than reducing poverty, and there has a been a noted reluctance for people to research how those thrown off rolls are doing. (Reports that 50% of ex-recepients have found jobs are not all that different from statistics in the eighties) By the end of the book Katz has clearly shown that we now live in a world where the price of citizenship is paid by those who can least afford it, as they are governed by men (and occasionally women) who believe that sacrifices are something that only other people do.

FINALLY, an objective book about welfare in the US.
By F_Luciano
Katz is a historian on welfare in the United States. This book is a history book about welfare. It is a very balanced and objective book, because the author tends to NOT write any of his own opinions, and instead, just uses the opinions of others. This is a good thing for 2 reasons: (1). You aren't as likely to be getting the author's bias meshed in with the writings (2). You get a BETTER historical view of welfare, and the different sides.
Now, I'm not sure if Katz is a liberal. He doesn't really ever go into what he thinks, or what his views are on the different issues of welfare. What I am sure is that he presents BOTH SIDES of the debate on welfare. Not only do you get to read the opinions of the liberals who are for welfare, but you get to read all the opinions of conservatives against it. This is how historical books are supposed to be presented, and this is how Katz' Price of Citizenship is presented. The reviewer below who talks about Katz making all these liberal assumptions obviously didn't read the book. Katz opinions in the matter are absent in the book. The ONLY case you could make about Katz creating a libral-bias side FOR welfare is by saying he gives more credence to liberal views than conservative views by presenting more, or better written liberal views than conservative views. Well, I didn't notice any such thing at all.
Now, I'm not going to pretend like this book doesn't seem to hint at giving any sort of credence to a political ideology. Its conclusions do seem to give more credence to the liberal side of the welfare debate than the conservative one. But is that because the author is creating biased arguments in favor of liberal positions? Nope. Read the book. You'll be amazed how objective this book is considering it deals with such an emotional, hot political topic. You know, sometimes, one side of the political spectrum may have more truth in its favor than the other side. When presenting these truths, this hardly counts as bias, or rhetoric. Its been my experience that neither political side (liberal or conservative) has a monopoly on the truth. Sometimes, when you take an objective look at a certain issue, and examine ALL the facts, one side is going to come out ahead. Thats just life. THere's no liberal or conservative conspiracy going on.
For those of you who've read Charle's Murray's Losing Ground (which I have), it is HARDLY a liberal equivalent. There is a surprisingly absense of political rhetoric, or emotional arguments in this book. It is truly a perfect example of how one CAN ACTUALLY learn some real truths about a political topic that has biased rhetoric from both sides of the political spectrum.
If you really want to learn something about welfare, and the recent history of welfare (i.e. welfare in the 90's) and all the recent debates about it, then read this book. Read it ESPECIALLY if you are like me, and are tired of reading countless partisan books from both sides time and time again when researching political topics.

Methought I heard a voice cry 'Sleep no more!
By Panopticonman
With "The Price of Citizenship," Katz performs a much needed demystification of the ways in which the social welfare state and the poor have been attacked and continue to be attacked by social and fiscal conservatives under the guise of consumer choice and the chimerical promise of the marketplace as the best of all possible ways to administer "welfare." A work of breathtaking scope, Katz examines each of the programs of the welfare state -- Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Unemployment Insurance, AFDC ("welfare"), Public Eduation, etc. -- gives a brief history of the inception of each, and then gives a recent history of how each program has come under attack by the forces of business and and their shortsighted friends in government.
Here's how they do it, according to Katz: Using the same master narratives of sorting citizens into deserving and undeserving categories to begin the assault, then tightening the screws on the "undeserving," the conservative business forces follow up with the panacea of the marketplace as the be-all and end-all solution: get those lazy minority mothers off the dole and into jobs; close down the loopholes in unemployment so that no one will qualify; drive people slowly toward the assumption of more and more risk by scaring them with junk statistics on the imminent demise of Social Security and then offering them the "solution" of mutual funds -- etc., etc., etc. The strategy is always the same: the market will knit up the ravell'd sleeve of care, when in fact it really serves to unravel the social safety net for those who need it most, and, weaves new money-making nets for others in the name of "efficiency" and "choice." These special stronger nets are the new welfare schemes for corporations and the upper and upper middle class.
One of the finest chapters deals with underhanded manipulation by conservatives of the public with regard to viability of Social Security. Katz convincingly shows that Social Security is not in any danger of going bankrupt -- period. He shows how the forces arrayed against Social Security, through misinformation, through the politics of playing younger workers against older workers, has managed to convince most Americans that they will either not recieve their benefits or recieved reduced benefits. Indeed, until I read this chapter, I was one sheep among the many. He then goes on to show how the various "choice" schemes proposed to "fix" Social Security through investment in the stockmarket -- either individually or collectively -- would serve to make financial companies billions and billions of dollars. In every chapter, Katz follows the money, and, sadly it usually leads to the ultra-right think tanks whose clients most stand to profit from the privatization of government social welfare programs.
It may sound by this review that "The Price of Citizenship" is a muckraking screed. Or that it was written by a conspiracy nut. It is neither. Instead it is a deeply researched work that convinces through facts as well as through narrative that the forces of the marketplace through the instrument of the ideology of the market as espoused by the right wing have been successful in undermining the foundations of U.S. social welfare programs (which frankly weren't much to begin with). Katz never uses invective -- the strongest word he uses is "underhanded" in his description of the scuttling of Clinton's health plan by business and medical interests -- instead he marshalls facts, questions assumptions, and draw important parallels and connections between the assaults on all of these programs. After reading this book, you'll be more than prepared to do some debunking of the conventional wisdom about Social Security, "Workfare" programs, HMOs, etc. May I dare say Katz has done us all, and even his country, a noble service by putting the lie to the master lie of the marketplace as the best solution for what ails us. Voucher this, baby!

but you can tell their love runs deep even though Belinda is scared to tell ...
By Mary Nash
Reading about Belinda and Bennett always makes me smile. Belinda gets into sticky situations and Bennett, the hot, boyfriend is always there to help her out. Their relationship is still fairly new, but you can tell their love runs deep even though Belinda is scared to tell Bennett how she truly feels.

Keep You On Your Toes Mystery
By Angie Young @ The Little Reading Cabin
First I want to say that I highly recommend that you read the first books in the Belinda an Bennett mystery series before reading this book. I haven't read any of the other books in this series. And I was a little bit lost at first because things kept being brought up that happened in previous books. So I'm going to go back and read the rest of the series myself so I will fully understand the references to them in this book.

The book itself was very good. And I didn't for a minute expected the killer to be who it turned out to be. This book had me thinking everyone and anyone except the actual killer. I love books like that. Also I liked how this story ended. It ended with a definite cliffhanger. So now I'm hoping and anticipating another book is in the works. I both love and hate stories like that. I love knowing another great mystery is coming. But hate it because I have to wait on the next book.

I highly recommend this book. Like I said, if you can, go back and read the other books in the series first so you don't feel like you are lost when reading this story.

Sweet mystery, with a bit of romance on the side...
By gds
Since this is my first Belinda and Bennett story, it took me a while to figure out the characters and some of the back story; I wish I had read the previous books as it would have made my personal reading more enjoyable. Having said that, this was a “sweet” romance book with a new mystery for these two to help solve. It was fun and light, a nice change from heavier reading. I did enjoy the secondary characters – poor Jonas doesn’t know what is about to hit him, at least in my humble opinion. Belinda pokes her nose into his life and it is sending him in circles. Very fun! I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I will pick up the other books in the series so I can get the full back story AND to figure out what Belinda and Bennett will get into next.

A must for your first LS rebuild
By J. Jacobsson
The book is extremely thorough, and filled with good color photographs of nearly every step. This book should (in my opinion) allow anyone with basic mechanical skills to tear down and rebuild any LS-series engine.

I've rebuilt engines before, but never an LS one, so I'm using this book for my 402cui LQ9 build, and I have yet to encounter a step which isn't covered in the book.

A great read and resource.
By B
This detailed overview of GM LS series motors is quite thorough and easy to read and follow. Whether you're a gearhead or just looking to get a historical overview of the inner workings of your LS series motor, this book is a must have. Even if you never intend to pull apart and rebuild a motor, this book is great to have simply to know more about how an engine works, and is built in general.

The step by step instructions are good. It goes into detail with not only what needs to be done at each step, but also why, and what tools you need, and it even goes into the different development of parts over the history of the LS series of motors.

One day I plan on building a larger motor from the ground up with my son (he's only 2 right now, so he's got a few years), and this book is and has been a great how-to guide. Even if you don't want to do the work yourself, it's a good read to understand what you're paying someone else to do. So when they start throwing out measurements for your motor build, you'll know exactly what they are talking about.

The only downside to this book, is with the rate that GM keeps updating these motors, you're going to need a new revision every 18 months.

If you're the kind of person who isn't satisfied with stock, then this is the book for you. Like I said, even if you don't plan on doing the work yourself, at least you'll have a better understanding of what's being done. Knowledge is power, how much power do you want???
